Title: Project "Brown Ghost" 72 Pinto Sedan
Post by: pintogirl on February 05, 2009, 10:38:32 PM
Well, I figured since I had my other 2 Pintos in the project area, I would ad my newest project. The Brown Ghost!!!

I named it the Brown Ghost because it was originally brown and somebody else painted it white, hence the ghost part of the name!! Someday waaaayyyyyy down the road, it will be brown again, hence keeping the "brown" in it's name!! LOL

I found this car while checking to see if the Pinto wagon I knew about was still on CL. It wasn't but this one was! LOL I found it on CL Sat. nite. Talked hubby into going to look at it on Sunday. We bought it and brought it home. The guy said it drove good, stopped good and ran good. He was right about one of them. I only got about 2 houses away from mine and the Pinto started making a clunking noise. We put it on the lift in the garage and found out the muffler was really loose and the drive line was hitting it. Fixed that and then found out that the front brakes were almost metal to metal. Fixed that too!! I also gave it a tune up. It runs about the same, LOL, but it does go good now, and stops good too!!

The body is in pretty good shape. The only thing I can really see wrong with it is it has a minor dent on the passenger fender. That fender and the passenger door are from a donor car, because they have been primered gray and they appear to have been green. The hood is also from a green donor car. They tried to rattle can the hood white, but did a lowsy job of it! I will try to find a closer match to the white of the rest of the car and paint the hood, door and fender. Just need a sunny day to do this! It had both of the sport side mirrors, but passenger side one is off the car and the holes that are in the door are pretty big, I will have to get nuts and bolts with washers to hold the mirror on the door. The driver side mirror had electrical tape rolled up to be double sided to suposedly hold it to the mount, LOL. Both screws are missing from the mount to mirror and the nuts too! The only thing holding it to the mount is the cable!

The interior is in need of some help. The middle section of the headliner is gone, the seat are red and out of a different car, as the po had to put holes in the floor board to mount them. The rear seat is ripped, but intact. The front floorboard carpet is pretty much gone, the padding is still good though. The passenger side carpet is on it's way to matching it's drivers side cousin!! LOL

The PO cut holes in the dash to mount gauges. I'm not thrilled about that, but will leave it alone for now. I can always put my spare dash plate over the holes.

I found out today that the windshield leaks. It isn't to bad, looks like just in one spot. I don't plan on driving it in the rain, but if I do get caught in it, all I would need to do is put a small bowl to catch the drips!!! LOL I bought a window rubber for the Green Machine, and since I can't drive it (for now), I think I will use the rubber for the Ghost instead.

This car didn't have the original blue license plates on it. It has the newer white one's. I tried to get DMV to let me use the blue plates that came off of the yellow pinto, but they said no. You know what that means right??? Since I have to have newer plates, might as well order some personalzed ones!!!! LOL  I just ordered GO BOOOM tonight!!!!! LOL Now I have to wait 8 - 12 weeks to get them!!

Ok, here are some pics!!! ;D Some you already have seen in my introduction to the car post!!

The PO removed the smog equipment. Luckily I have the stuff out of the yellow pinto!!!

Inside,

The car has what looks to be a choke cable houseing attatched to the kick panel. I'm guessing this may have come out of another year pinto.?

Now for an updated pic of the inside!! I went shopping today!! LOL Remember the red seats??? Now look!!!

Even bought a tree freshener to keep with the period, well ok, not to much though, I bought a purple one!! LOL Smells like lavender!!  ;D
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/Pinto/IMG_0230.jpg)

I took the seats that came out of the yellow pinto outside and gave them a good soaking. I poured diluted Super Clean over them and scrubbed, then poured Dawn detergent over the twice and scrubbed again. Then I just hosed them down with hot water for quite a while. They are now in the process of drying, well kind of, they dry when it isn't raining! LOL I'm going to leave them out side in the rain for a couple of days. I'm hoping that will get any rat/cat pee smell out of them!! They actually don't smell bad at all, since the cleaning. Once they are dry I plan on putting the seat covers I bought for the red one seats. I will eventually have the pinto one's re upholstered, but this is the cheaper route right now!!!

That's about all for now!  ;D

Hey Kim!

Look like you're making pretty good progress, considering you've had the car less than a week.  I've had mine for a year and haven't accomplished that much!  Oh course, I don't have the nice California weather either LOL!

If the seats or anything else still smells like a litterbox on wheels try Simple Solution. Take it from someone who has more pets than sense- this stuff works! ;D

The seats that are in the Pinto now don't stink, they are just the wrong seats!! Here are the donor seats that stunk!! They were out of the yellow donor pinto. It was in a field for who knows how long.

They really arn't in to bad of condition! Nothing a seat cover wont hide!! LOL In fact, I think that is what kinda saved them in the first place. They had seat covers on them, although there wasn't much left to them! LOL

They are now in the drying stage. Once dry I will swap them with the red seats and cover them with the new seat covers!!

I also got my sport mirrors put on and fixed!!! That was a job in a  half. The passenger mirror had no nuts on the door. I had to reach up in there and ad washers and nut to the new bolts.!! I little secret or tip, LOL, I used a magnet on the mirror side of the door, to hold the washer on the inside, so I could reach up with the nuts!!! Worked really well!!!! :)

I also gave her a detail job!!!!

I don't remember if this was in my other posts, but I found this neat cup holder at Walmart!!!!! Starbucks here I come!!!! LOL
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/Pinto/IMG_0246.jpg)

Well, thats all for now!!!!

She's going to be a fun daily driver, and beautiful again once you get her cleaned up!

Those cup holders are great by the way. I used to use one in my car before I had a center console. Now I miss it! :(

Yah, I have to have a cup holder!! No cup holder, no drive!! LOL Got to have my starbucks!!!! Wish they made them in brown though!!!!! LOL

Maybe tomorrow will be sunny and I can take her on her first "beyond the neighborhood" drive, and go to Starbucks!!! :D

Well today was sunny, but didn't get to go take her to Sbucks!  >:(  Hubby had to move her out of the garage yesterday and he said that he wanted to check the timeing before I took her for a long drive! He didn't have a chance to do it till tonight. It was way off!!! I thought she ran good before, she runs awesome now!!!

Now the only thing that is holding me back, I forgot to call my insurance lady. So I don't have insurance yet. I will have to wait till Monday now to get insurance! I tried to add it to my policy via the internet, but my company doesn't do that yet! Bummer!

Can't wait till next Thursday so I can take her shopping!! I would drive her to work but the headlights shut off with no warning and you have to play with the switch to get them to come back on. I tried getting a new switch but Napa doesn't have any in stock and cant order any yet! Hubby called Ford today and they don't carry it either, oh, and they don't do the recall on them anymore either!! LOL He thought he'd try!! LOL

Here's to next week!!!!! LOL

If it doesn't have the tank shield, there is a 72 or 73 out in a yard I have recently started going to lately that had the tank removed, but the shield was left hanging off the straps.

The shield on that car is black, and BOTH straps go through it. The 77 Bobcat Wagon and my 78 Pinto Sedan both used a smaller shield that only goes through the passenger side strap.

If anyone can verify that the black shield in my local yard is correct for pintogirl's 72 Sedan, I would be glad to go back and get it for you!

If it is confirmed it will work, I will take it!! I have a 71 Pinto that is need of one too!! I have only one off my 71 yellow donor car, so I will need one more, so if your find will work on either of my Pintos, that would be great!!! Oh, and the one we took off the 71 yellow car went through both straps! Well they were bolted on to both straps!! :)

Hey Dwayne,

I have to say, we have been really lucky (if you can call it that) this year as far as weather!!! It has been sunny and warm almost all year round this year. Only bad thing is, with only maybe about a couple of weeks of rain (total for this winter, not consecutive), we may be in trouble as far as water goes this summer!! May have to drink the pool water!!! LOL Either that or San Diego may have to ship some back to us!! LOL

Guess I should mention that I found a headlight switch online. I bought 2 of them since the Green Machine is needing one too!! Now all I need for the Ghost is a windshield wiper switch. I have a post about it in the general area though!!

:P Hey Kim!!! Send Hubby down here to fix the Baby's timing belt too! lol. I might even send some San Diego water back with him! lol.

If the other flap offered won't work there's that poor '72 that still has one. Hopefully the car's still there.  ;D

I wish I could talk hubby into taking more then a few hours off on a weekend!!! I would love to come down/up, (directionally challenged LOL) and meet you and see your car!!!!

Ok, keep the flap in mind for me. Check to see what they want for it, I may have you get it, just so I can have a spare, or atlest to save it from the crusher for the fact, you can't get them from Ford anymore!!! Let me know how much the wrecking yard wants for it and the hardware to install it!!!

It was raining tonight and I had the Pinto parked out front of my carport so I figured I would play with the camera!!!!  ;D

I found out that just cleaning the track of the windshield wasn't good enough. I still have the leak in the same place. My hubby's kid installs windshields, so I asked him to install the rubber I bought for the Green Machine, into the Ghost. He will do it as soon as it clears up again so we can set the rubber in the sun!!! In the meantime, I will only drive it between storms!!!

I also figured out that my brake lights don't come on unless I mash on the brakes. Same as the Green Machine did. I will look at the switch tomorrow. Won't drive it till I get that fixed for sure!! No brake lights on a Pinto is a bad thing!! LOL

Tonight I had hubby take a look at the brake light switch. I had to mash on the brakes to get the brake lights to come on. We discovered that somebody installed the brake light switch wrong!! ??? How one can do that I don't know. We also discovered that the master cylinder is leaking! I called Napa and they have a rebuilt in stock so tomorrow I get to go pick that up.

I'm telling you all this to let you know that I now can not drive my Pinto tomorrow!  >:( I was planning on driving it to go shopping. Guess I will have to wait to go shopping till Friday!! LOL

Here's hoping all will go well and I will be able to drive it shopping on Friday!!

Today I fought the speedometer cluster and finally got it out. Only had to make one trip up into the loft to check on how things work! LOL My donor parts are up there and I had to go check to see how the cable comes off the speedometer!!  I forgot how I did it the last time!! LOL

I finally had access to the windshield wiper switch. I fought with that for a while, and finally was able to switch it with the new switch. The good news is, I have a good spare wiper switch now!! LOL THe bad new is, it wasn't the wiper switch that was bed, it's the actual motor!!! :(

I decided that I will wait and do the motor until I get around to swapping the seats out. That way I will be able to lay down in the car and reach every thing easier! I also have to R&R the actual arms too. The driver side wiper stud (don't know what it is actually called) the thing the wiper sits on, has a bad spot. The wiper can move it but there is a blank spot, or basically I can move the wiper stud with out the other wiper moving! Boy my lack of terms is killing me today! LOL So, how hard is it to R&R the wiper arms under the dash?? I had no problem pulling the one out of my yellow pinto, LOL I had the dash out of it!! I'm thinking it is not going to be fun trying to pull that long arm out of all that wiring and such!

So now I sit in the house and wait for my headlight switch, that is supposed to be here today!! Once I get that I will go put it in and put my cluster back in!! Least my headlights should stay on, at least I hope they do!! LOL

I have to say, I love the way she runs though. I started her up gave her gas for about 30 seconds and then she runs on her own. I'm really happy with this little Pinto!!! Can't wait to get some of this minor stuff done and also get some dry days so I can drive her!!!

Ok, now I'm mad!!!! >:(  I have been sitting here all day waiting for Fed Ex, which on their site said "estimated" day of delivery was today, and now I just went and checked again and they changed it to tomorrow!! >:( >:(  I know it is an estimated date, but usually Fed Ex is never off, normally they would be early if anything. Now I have to wait another day and my poor Ghost is torn apart. I was hoping to have her all back together tonight! Guess not!! LOL

Tomorrow is another day!!  ;D

I bought some cheapy Walmart spray paint about a week ago or so. Today I decided to try covering up some of the primer on the Pinto!! I now know what it means, 'You get what you pay for"!! LOL  Although the car looks a bit better then being half gray and half white, the cheapy paint sure shows it's true color!! LOL

Here is a before,
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/Pinto/IMG_6354.jpg)

And an after,
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/Pinto/IMG_6424.jpg)

View from the rear! Before
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/Pinto/IMG_6355.jpg)

After
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/Pinto/IMG_6425.jpg)

Hubby tried to warn me about trying to paint with white rattle can spray paint! He said it would probably be better to just paint the whole car in rattle can primer then to just do the fender and door in the white. He may have been right, but I didn't want to try to mask everything off, and figured eventually I will take it to have it painted brown again! Although the white is really growing on me! LOL Can one tell by the door sticker what the original paint color was?? If not, it may go to white!! LOL

Kim

Oh, took hubby to lunch in the Pinto today!! LOL He saw me coming to pick him up and pretended he was going to run back into the building!! LOL Then he called his boss saying that if he doesn't return it's because I broght the Pinto!! LOL We made it there and back. Hubby said people were pointing!! I think the security guard at KFC (can you believe that they need security at a FF place?) took a pic with his cel phone!!! LOL

Kim, on the D.S. doorjamb there's the sticker that has codes for color, trim, etc. If your color code is 5T you have the Baby's older sister (well duh you have her anyway regardless of color!) in Saddle Bronze Metallic. Medium Brown Metallic is 5H. What's your color code say?

Yeah when fast food places have to have security guards you know times are rough!

THat's what's neat about Kim and Hubby: They are a team and help each other out, even when Kim corrals yet another Pinto! LOL! While I like being single there's something about having a man you love (if you're a girl) helping you out and being supportive. I would love to have a Hubby like Kim has who's maybe long-suffering (don't you have enough Pintos?)lol. but will go with me to look at another Pinto or Mustang II or whatever and help me work on it.

This morning it was nice and sunny so I decided to take the rubber for the windshield out into the sun to let it warm up a bit. I cut out the old windshield and cleaned up the dash the best I could. Somebody sprayed glue all over it trying to keep the dash pad on. (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/pfft.gif) I noticed the car had some type of what looked like a foam thing (now hard) going around the metal of the window frame. It was on top of the headliner. So it goes, headliner, foam, then windshield rubber. When I got to that point, I wasn't sure if I should scrape that old foam stuff off or just leave it. So we called hubby's son and he (windshield installer) said he would come over and look at it.

Well, 6 hours later, hubby and I decided to go for dinner and who shows up, the kid! LOL We tell him we'll be right back and try to explain better about the foam stuff. When we got back from dinner, he already had the windshield in and the chrome trim back on too. I'm not happy with the trim job he did, so I will take that back off and do it myself when he's not around! For some reason the way he put the trim on, it is sticking up more. You can also see more of the rubber then you could before. I'm wondering if it is because the rubber is new and doesn't sit as flat as the old windshield??? Anyway, I will try to re do it myself and see if I can get it on better. I did ask him about that foam stuff and he said that is part of what is supposed to keep it from leaking. He said that it is better to just leave it on, but if it does leak he said he would take the chrome back off and lift the molding a bit and put his windshield glue under it. He said that they actually taught him to do it that way, but he doesn't like to glue them because then you can't get them back out.

It is supposed to rain tomorrow so I will pull the Ghost back out of the garage and put the new rubber to the test!!

Now for a new problem.  The PO has a shoe string that goes threw one of the defrost vents, then comes back up threw the other one. This string is actually holding the vent up to the dash. I tried to take needle nose pliers and pull the vent back up into the tabs on the metal dash, but it will not stay up. The string has to stay there for now. I need to find out why it wont stay snug on the dash. I will tackle that when I get ready to tackle the wiper motor and it's arms under the dash!!! My Pinto seats are dry now so depending on how things go tomorrow or Monday, I may tackle that then!!

Well, the rain test failed. My windshield still leaks! (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/gaah.gif) Sad thing is, I broke it while trying to get it back out. Hubby had it almost all back out at the top and he handed me the tool and said to be carefull, that was a mistake, because we heard crackkkkk. (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/gaah.gif)

We decided to go pull the windshield out of the green machine, since it is down for the count for now anyway. Got it out but I noticed that it doesn't have the tint at the top. I'm really wishing I could get the windshield out of the brown car because it has the tint, but I don't think hubby wants a bunch of Pintos with know windshields in them, besides, I will have to take the winshield back out of the ghost later down the line anyway. I need to replace the headliner in it, but don't plan on doing that till I am ready to paint. I have other Pintos I want to do first though! By that time I should have found the right replacement window!!

We went and bought some silicone and decided to stop for tonight. We will let the rubber dry good and put the winshield back in tomorrow. This time with silicone to help seal it!!!! Oh, hubby also sanded that foam stuff I mentioned in the other post, off. It was all curled up from when the kid installed it this last time. Hubby figured it would be best to get it out of there.

I'm hoping with the silicone between the window and the rubber, and silicon around the rubber and the car, it won't leak anymore!!! Crossing fingers all goes well tomorrow!

I'm crossing mine too!

I'm sorry about your windshield troubles. You'd better come down and get that windshield out of the '72 in the wrecking yard in Oceanside! lol. No cracks in it yet! No, I wouldn't want my car without a windshield. THat's how critters (uninvited) move in and leave the kind of deposits you can't take to the bank!  Plus dust and moisture (even if it's sheltered) can get in.

Ok, got a new windshield today!!! Used silicone in and around the rubber so I should be good to go now!! I will test it for leaks the next time it rains!!  ;D The windshield is no longer the original, but at least it is nice an shiny and has lovely blue tint at the top insted of the brown tint!! Amazing how that tint changes colors over the years!!!  :o

Hubby noticed that the motor is making a tapping noise. I noticed it too, but wasn't to concerned. LOL Anyway, I now have to find a valve cover gasket because hubby wants to adjust the lifters, or what ever they are called!! LOL I will have him re time the car again too. Hopefully if all goes right, I will get that done tomorrow. THen I should be able to take the ghost shopping on Thurs.  ;D

Next thing I may do is switch the radio and speakers from the Green Machine to the Ghost. Figured the green machine is down for a while, so might as well enjoy my iPod in the Ghost!!! LOL

Glad to hear your windshield is replaced! I really wish I could get that far with mine, as mine has leaked for awhile now.....

If you don't get enough rain to test it, take it through a car wash and watch for leaks, then when you're done inspect the carpet for wet spots, pull up the carpet along the firewall and stick your hand between it and the floor to feel for dampness.

I find that my windshield only leaks during a downpour, never during regular rain. :(

Today I finished up the windshield install. Cleaned everything and put the chrome back on. Then the mail came and my brand new 8 track player arrived!!!! It had never been hooked up, all wires were still uncut!! It was an ebay find!!! Roughly 40 bucks is what I paid for it!!!!

Here are some pics!!

Here is a YouTube video of it playing!! Don't know how long the video will actually be up, sometimes youtube pulls the plug on them do to the songs and copyright mumbo jumbo!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPEi1EojdIs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPEi1EojdIs)

Trying to ad a link to the video via my photobucket! Never done it before so we will see if it works. It's the same video as the youtube so you don't have to click on it, unless the youtube doesn't work!! LOL

Eventually I will replace the radio bezel and the stereo with a more original radio. That is if my 8 track to cassette adapter works! LOL That way I can play my iPod threw it!! If not, the more up to date radio will stay in!! LOL

Pintogirl,

i think that the last time i had or even saw an 8 track was in my old 55 chevy in high school (almost 40 years ago) it had an always playing jimi hendrix tape in it !!

that's cool!

VERY COOL  :surprised:  Elvis lives!

I have a factory installed 8-track in my '79 Lincoln Continental Collector's Series sedan and it works great.  My biggest problem is finding the tapes.  I currently have about a dozen.  I bought one of the 8-track/cassette adaptors on eBay and it does a pretty good job of playing cassettes, which does help broaden my availablilty of musical selections.

Enjoy!

Back to the drawing board! I just did a hose test on the windshield and it still leaks! (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/gaah.gif) In fact, it leaks worse now then when it did with the dry rubber gasket. Worse then before we added the silicone. Pretty much leaks all the way down the side posts, starting just above the curve of the windshield. It's leaking between the metal and the rubber, not the rubber and the windshield. I guess we should have used alot more silicone then what we did.

I'm going to try to get the step kid, the one that puts in windshields for a living, to actually put the gunk he usually uses on the windshields on. On the inside of the car the rubber is pretty pliable. I think we can peel it back enough to run a bead of the gunk along the cars metal edge. I'm hoping that will solve the problem. I already had to buy a new windshield because I broke it the first time we had to remove it because of no sealent. Don't want to have to try to remove it again!

I'm getting pretty upset about this leaking. This is the only area that it leaks. Should be an easy fix but turning out to be a nightmare! (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/gaah.gif)

If you're into 8 tracks, (and who isn't ) here is a 69-71 circa Ford cataloged, dealer installed/over the counter player to watch out for on e-bay, Pick Your Parts, or swaps. This one is going into my 69 Mustang with the same deluxe woodgrain/camera case black colored interior.

The adaptor is the way to go....the tapes pull apart at the continuous loop joint. The tape is glued together in one spot. They are old and crispy with age. You will be listening to your favorite tape and then................nothing >:(  They CAN be repaired if you are REALLY handy. Put the tape in for visuals at shows only or risk them going BYE BYE :lost: It's not IF...It's when...

I have an 8-track in my wagon and people LOVE it  ;D  I was able to get the FORD am/fm/8-track that looks stock as well as a bunch of tapes (in the fake snake skin case with red felt inside) off of e-bay pretty cheap and everything WORKS GREAT. I saw the cassette adaptors in the back of an AMC Pacer and had to have one of those as well  ;D

Kim, I hope the Windshield Kid can save the day for you and The Ghost. Water trapped next to the metal is not good. My poor Rodeo has rust cancer where the rubber meets the metal at the roofline almost all the way across.  >:( :'(

Good for you getting a piece of audio history, though. The only 8-track tape I ever owned was a Gordon Lightfoot one (Summertime Dream). It had my favorite GL song "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald". I don't know what ever happened to that tape. Lucky me I got the cd and it's imported on the ipod. Great album.

Well, I have been pretty busy with my new puppy, so I havn't had a chance to work on the ghost, till now! The kid came over and put his winshield goop around the outside of the rubber. I think this will solve my problem, but wont get excited till I can test it out tomorrow. Tonight hubby re checkd the timeing, then he adjutsted the lifters! He sat the valve cover on to just test start the car (I need to clean the old gasket off of it). It was really quiet!!!! I can't wait to get the valve cover back on and take the car for a test drive!!!!  I sure hope this will be the last major thing I need to do to be able to drive the pinto with more confedence!! :D

Finally!!!!!!  ;D  Hubby adjusted the lifters/valves or whatever they are called, LOL and I took the car out and did a hose water test on the windshield. No more tapping and no more leaking!!!!!!! (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/wings.gif)  I took her to drop off some dog poop at the vet  The needed it for parasite testing!! She (the Pinto, lol) pinged a bit when she shifted into second and third gears. She also seemed a bit sluggish. So hubby turned the distributor and I took her around the block. Nope still pings, turned it again, and bingo, that did the trick. No more pinging and she goes pretty darn good now!!

So, knock on wood, lol, I think I have a daily driver (well almost daily lol) now!!!! Jammin to an eight track player with a "Road Music" 8 track playing!! (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/lala.gif)

In the spirit of getting ready for Knotts, I fixed my yuckky headliner!! It is just a patch, but I am suprised, it didn't come out all that bad. Just a bit of Frankinstien stitching on both ends, but other then that it all tucked up nicely!!! Here are the pics, of course!! LOL

Before..

In the process..
I took the bars that hold the headliner off, after I measured the distance between them. Then I brought them in the house and layed them on my material in the distances they needed to be at. I pinched the material and pinned it. Then removed the bars and headed for the sowing machine. I'm not much of a sower, but all and all things went pretty good, well except that my bobber threader didn't work and I only had one bobbin that fit, so I had to hand thread it!! LOL Once it was all sewn I put the metal bars back through the slots I just made.

I went to the car and proceeded to install the 3 bars with my new headliner patch. Things weren't going to well, the bars seemed to be way to big in some spot, but to small in others. Then I realized, I should have marked what bar came from what holes and what position in the car! LOL I figured it all out and started to push patch headliner into the side rail thingy's. LOL
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/Pinto/IMG_6542.jpg)

Here's my Frankenstien sewing! LOL It was the only way I could figure out how to attach the front and back to the old headliner.  ;D I used a curved needle to do this. What a pain in the arms that was!!  ;D

Not to straight,
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/Pinto/IMG_6547.jpg)
But you can't tell that much with the sun visors up! LOL
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/Pinto/IMG_6548.jpg)

Starting on the back,
(http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/Pinto/IMG_6549.jpg)

All tucked in!!

All done!!

After...

It's not the best. Kinda luppy here and there, but it is better then the before pic and at least the roof padding is safe now. I can actually roll my windows down all the way now!! LOL

Next project for tomorrow is, swapping out the seats and installing the AM radio with brown bezel. I will then need to find an old equalizer/booster to boost the sound up a bit. Can't use an amp do to not having any RCA jacks on the old radio and 8 track player!! LOL But if I get a booster, I can atleast listen to my iPod with a bit better sound quality!! LOL You know, 8trach to cassette adaptor to cassette to ipod adaptor!! LOL Just have to have that nostalgic look with the revolutionary iPod!!! LOL

That's about as respectable a temporary fix as I've ever seen!  I'm impressed.  If you were to invest in a couple cans of SEM dye and spray the entire thing, old material and new, probably no one would ever notice it at all!  Congratulations on a job well done!

Thanks!!

That sounds like a good idea, except the new material is just plain material for like making clothes! LOL I didn't try to buy vinyl, I thought it would be to hard to deal with. Thought the plain material would be lighter to sew, upside down!! LOL

I can put iron patches now though!!!!! LOL

What a productive day for me and the Ghost!!!!!

Today I removed the red seats, removed the bad wiper motor and wiper arms. Then replaced said arms and motor. I fixed the "tied" up defrost vent! By looking at the donor pintos dash, I figured out that all the clips were missing off of the ghost's vent. I took the clips off of the donor and put them on the ghost and now my defrost is up nice and tight!!! No more shoe string!!

After all that I finally got to put the Pinto seats from the donor pinto in the Ghost!! It looked alot better, even with out the seat covers!! But, I did put the covers back on do to the seats being pretty messed up!! I found out that the driver seat doesn't move back as far as the red seat did. I have to lift my leg up a bit more to step on the brake. Also found out that the padding is pretty weak. I will be buying one of those seat pads from walmart and putting it under the seat cover to give me some boost up!! I feel like a low rider right now!! LOL  I also figured out that the passenger seat doesn't move up or back, nor does the back of the seat adjust!! So I sit further back in the car then the passenger does! LOL

After all that I put a new battery in. So now I can hopefully have the door open and radio on for more then 10 min. without the battery going dead!!

I went up stairs to find the donor pintos radio and bezel, just to find out that it wasn't the stock radio and someone cut the circle parts of the bezel bigger so the radio they installed would work! (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/gaah.gif) Luckily I bought a brown bezel from PnP a while ago. So the next nice day I will take the am radio that came out of the green machine and the install it in the ghost. That way I will have a more original looking car!!! All I need to find though to make things sound better is one of those old equalizer/boosters!!! Oh, and I need to install some 6x9's in the back! I will wait for a sunny day though. I like to work outdoors for more light!!

Tomorrow I am going to take a chance and drive her to work!!! I drove her all around Thurs. and Fri. and she did fine. The only thing I have never done with her yet, is drive her in the dark for that far!!! It's 20 miles one way, right threw town. The way there is in the dark, and the way home will be in stop and go traffic. I'm taking the AAA card, just in case!!! LOL

I hope Ghost is at least as fun!  I do miss my music but for now I want to be able to listen to abnormal noises should they come (so far so good!)

Nah, ball joints are easy!! Just put the car on the lift and have your hubby do it!!!!!! LOL  :D

You know.... I sit here and read the threads you all have about your Pintos.  It amazes  :amazed: me the things you all come up with for repairing these wonderful cars.  Your headliner looks amazing, but I'm with Dave, I think some fabric spray dye would tie the repair in very nicely .  You did a fantastic job, I simply would not have had the patience or talent to complete the headliner repair.  I have purchased a new headliner for the 1971 I bought from Reed in Washington State.  I'm going to have that installed at my upholstery shop next month.  I Don't know what that's going to cost me at this point, but they're telling me they may have to remove the windshield and back glass to replace it.  Whew!!!!!! oh well, I have a small leak on both glasses, this will give them a chance to reseal them both.  Anyway, keep up the good work, your Pinto is a dandy.  Larry :police:

Thanks Larry!

Yah, I want to eventually replace my headliner too, but I want to wait till I can paint the car brown again. To do that I will want to take all the windows out and strip the car down so we can remove all the white that someone else painted!!

The car had all of it's roof padding so to save it I chose to go my cheap (painful) route!! LOL I say painful because my wrist hurt for 2 days after sewing the patch to the old headliner!!!! Ouch!! I am really thinking about doing the cloth or paint you all are talking about. I need to find where to purchase it so I can read the label and see how hard it will be to do it. My only concern on that is the fact that the patch is a material and the old headliner is vinyl, and I"m thinking the material will dye darker or lighter then the vinyl!!

You mention that they may have to remove the rear window, do you have a line on where to purchase new rubber for the rear??? Guess I should ask if yours is trunk or hatch??? I forgot which you have. I found rubber for the hatches, but can't find it for the trunk model!!
Title: Re: Project "Brown Ghost" 72 Pinto Sedan
Post by: larjohnson on March 18, 2009, 07:39:50 PM
pintogirl:  No I have no idea where to find the new rubber.  Yes, I do have the trunk model.  It's the trunk model from Washington State Reed had for sale.  I had it shipped to Muncie, Indiana (Home of Close Encounters and the TV show ARMED AND FAMOUS)(By the way I personally met most of the celebrities from this show).  It's a great little trunk model, it's exactly like the one I had in High School, many moons ago.  I love the car, and am enjoying it a lot.  You may want to check my thread out, restoring my 1971 trunk model under projects.  It's located near yours.  I have some of my restoration pictures already on the thread.  It's coming along quite nicely.  If I do find a place to purchase the window rubber pieces, I'll let you know for sure.  I'm not sure if my windows will have to come out, if they do, I could see myself having to replace it.  Anyway, great little Pinto you have there, hope you enjoy it.  Larry :police:

 >:( Headliners!  >:(

Today I got a bug up mt you-know-what and decided to sew the part of the headliner that's had its threads disintegrate. When I bought Baby in November '08 She had the littlest of parting (maybe an inch). But over 200 miles later (it's warm here!) the 1 inch parting became half a foot, then eventually two feet. Now I know I have curved needles in this Crackerbox Palace but naturally I can't find my sewing kit. Long story (hopefully) short I had to buy the supplies and got to work. I was getting to the end of the project when the needle eye caught and rrp! the original threads pulled from the white muslin (?) strip that the metal ribs go through so now that part of the headliner, while resewn, now sags.  >:(

Just take your curved needle and sew the headliner back to the bar!! You may end you with some "Frankenstien" stitches, but it may be better then a sag!!!

Well, I figured I'd better do a little update!!

Not much going on with the Ghost. Today I spent most of the day polishing the chrome!!! I also put some 'back to black' on all the black trim. Trying to get her somewhat shiny for Knotts!!!

I still need to do the radio and booster install and depending on what goes on this weekend, I will try to do it. If all else fails I will work on it on next Thurs. or Fri.!!

Can't wait for Knotts!!! Can't wait to get what is up my sleeve out!! LOL

I am getting better at telling you two apart, Becky (or is it Kim :tgif:) Just kidding! ;D

Becky=Brown Pinto
Kim=  Brown Ghost

I'm going 'old school' with my radio too. My CD player in the car is on it's way out, it doesn't like to give cd's back, and when they get stuck the radio doesn't work, and I'm just tired of taking it apart over and over again. I tuned up my auto stop cassette analog 2 knobber (from 78squirewagon) and cleaned the equalizer CarolinaBoy sent me. I was going to put it in the car today, but we woke up to a dusting of snow, and for being in the middle of the desert, it was kinda frigid. So I opted to stay indoors and dub music from 8 track to cassette and cd to cassette.

Remember: It's not illegal to duplicate material you have purchased for your own personal use, like changing media so you can play it in a different device, or saving on your computer to put on your MP3. It is illegal to duplicate for distribution, whether compensated or not.

That is why you don't get to hear the whole song in most of my videos, and I give credits to authors, It's not a duplication of the song for it's sake, it's just an example of what you would find and how my equipment works. You know, "a bear in it's natural habitat, a Studebaker-WAKA-WAKA"  This is just a stop-gap. Have cassette player, need music. I'll do a short photo essay about installation for my project thread in a few days! ;D   If you don't see it here by, say midnight tomorrow, remind me so I can do it Sunday! :lost:

Chuck your radio sounds like it is going to be great!!  I'm going AM Radio with 8 track below dash, and hopefully EQ Booster below the 8 track. Then going from 8 track to cassette adapter, to cassette auxiliary adapter for the iPod!! LOL Old tech meets new tech!! LOL Hopefully it all works as planned!!!

Ok, I actually have a couple of pics to show!!! I took this....

I have had to buy nail polish for work ..... We use it to mark the timing on the printing press  , when the unit is not in use  we disengage it  with the timing marked  saves alot of time. nail polish is the only thing that holds up to the gear oil in the unit.

Today ended up being a very windy day, so I didn't get my radio installed, course hubby not bringing the 8 track home had somehting to do with it too!! LOL I decided to test the 8track to casssette adaptor to iPod adapter in the 8 track player I have in the car now. Thought I should make sure it would work before I install an 8 track radio in the bezel. If it didn't I would have installed one of my old cassette radios instead.

Well it worked!!! I was able to listen to my iPod threw all the adaptors!! LOL Heres I pic! Not to good of one because I took it with my iPhone!! LOL

The only thing bad about this set up, is I can't put the car in park with the cassette adapter in the 8 track player! LOL It's going to be nice to have the 8track in the radio itself. Just need to get hubby to bring it home! LOL

Did all those adapters kill fidelity much?

I'd think I'd put a jack discretely on the under side of the 8-track and do some wiring so that the iPod plays into the bases of the first audio transistors of the 8-track.

I did something like this back in the '80s getting a Walkman knockoff to play on a '47 Studebaker radio. Of course, I had to go through the grid of the first audio tube.

You know, I can't tell you if it killed the fidelity any!! LOL I only have 2, 4 inch speakers located in the rear quarter panel peices. Sound isn't that great to begin with!! LOL  I still need to add the EQ Booster and a couple of 6x9s. This set up will be ok for me because I'm not to concerned about people hearing my radio outside my car!! LOL Just want it to sound ok to me with a bit more volume. I have also out grown my "got to have bass" days!! LOL Now just loud and half way decent sound is good to me!!

Kinda funny about my current set up. With the speakers I have and the 8 track player. I has a sound of old time (wonder why?? LOL) music, just like I used to listen to in Grandpa's motorhome!! LOL It sure brings back memories!!!  ;D

I'm also no good with trying to connect things like you mentioned. I know they sell a thing one can ad to their AM radios, but you need a little knowledge in that area. All I know how to do is hook up speakers and amps. Pretty basic stuff!!

That is what I was kinda going for with the adapter situation. LOL Old meets new!!! LOL Won't that be a kick to see at Knott's??? We are bringing a battery jumper with us to jump the car if we run the battery down. That is if we run the radio that much!!! I think it would be a hoot to play some 8 tracks too!!! LOL

That is the purple iPod my son bought me for my Birthday a while ago!! It was the most expensive thing he has ever got me!!! I was really thrilled when he gave it to me, he knew purple was my favorite color too!!! He did take my older square version iPod in return though!! LOL Guess you can't have it all!! LOL

To me, old time sound would be listening to Top-40 in AM mono car radio or Panapet 70.

Although, moving ahead, but still in the good ol' days, listening to New Wave mix tapes and their ilk on the auto-reverse Sanyo in the Pinto that I had all the way through the "80s.

Ok, now that Knotts is over, and people saw my suprise (which I had to tell them what it was LOL) I can update my thread!

A bit after Hubby (Bob) agreed to go to Knotts, he decided that we should clean the Ghost up a bit before we went. He told me to take it around and get quotes on a new paint job. He wanted just the bare minimum, and to just shoot it white again for now. (I want to do more detail to it before going back to it's original color). So off I went. I ended up going with Maaco. They were the cheapest that I could find and it was around 360 out the door. I then decided to have them clear coat it so it cost me 400 even! It didn't come out to bad!!

Here are some before during and after pics!!

Ok, this isn't much of an update, but I am excited about it and wanted to share! LOL

The Ghost has been making a chirping noise while running, worse when sitting at an idle in gear. Not so noticable when driving down the road. Today I asked hubby to listen to it. He put some grease on the distributor and belt dressing on the belts! I shut the hood and started her up, and WOW what a difference!! She is as quiet as mouse!!!!!!

I can't wait to go shopping tomorrow!!!!!!! (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/myhrdly/wings.gif) She is sounding good!!  ;D And here I thought is was going to be a major problem and would have to replace a cam or something like that!!! LOL

Actually I have been busy reading about Cockatiels.!! I discovered that the birds I rescued last year, have laid 5 eggs!!! I am doing research on them so if the eggs do hatch I will be prepared!! I won't be able to handfeed this clutch because of a already planned m/c trip July 4th weekend. So I wanted to see if I could handfeed them a couple of times a day, and then put them back in with the parents so they can take care of them when I can't!! I found out that it is possible to do it that way!! Yay!!!  I want them to be hand tame!!

Here is a pic of the eggs and one of the birds.

Now I am just hoping that they are fertile! LOL The hens will lay even if they don't breed. I know one of the three tiels is a male, but I don't know if they have done the deed or not! LOL Time will tell!!!

So that is what I have been up too!! LOL

Now, on the Pinto!!  I drove it Friday to go to my local "beanery" and then to Emiegh hardware to buy my garden veggies!! It was so nice to drive her and not think I was killing a bird!! LOL Hubby was very successful at getting rid of the chirping noises it was making!! LOL  I sure love this car!!! Now I just need him to fix the rototiller so I can plant those veggies!! LOL

That is a Pretty bird. Is she evil? I know mine sure is... lol Since the brown ghost is running right now you and hubby can fix Harold II lol jk.. or am I? hehe

Tell you the truth, I'm not really sure if they are evil or not! LOL I got them from a lady that kept them on her back porch in a small cockatiel cage, not even big enough for them to stretch their wings. I know she didn't interact with them. Just used them for breeding. I put them in with my finches, that didn't work out, so I moved them into a temp. cage. This is where they have decided to lay eggs! So it may be temp. a little longer then planned! LOL The temp cage is big enought for about 10 cockatiels though! They are still outdoor birds and I don't try to hold them or anything. I just go talk to them when I feed and water them. So, basically they are my breeders too, but I will take much better care of them. Heck, I was paying over 200 dollar a month for electricity during the winter, just to keep all my breeder birds warm!! LOL So yah, they are in a lot better hands now!! LOL

Send Harrold II this way and hubby and I will get right on it!!  :D ;D

What a beautiful pearly hen you have! I've had sweet birds and evil birds (when they gnash their beak as they bite you hard. Ouch!) and I've raised 'em too. You probably know what they're doing when they do their version of the horizontal mambo. They make funny little noises too. My breeding pair (gray male, pied female) were hand friendly so I was able to hold the babies (hoo boy they're ugly! lol.) when they're still in pin feathers. I would hold them and very gently rub their beaks with thumb and finger to get them used to me and my hand. The chicks turned out pretty sweet.

While you went to your beanery I went to see Fred Morgan in Mission Beach. Details on my Baby thread... ;D  I'm glad you love Ghost Kim! I miss the 2.0- SelectShift combo. It is fun to drive The Avocado (or whatever her name is! lol) in a weird way, though.

And...

I noticed with my 'tiels when they are brooding or nesting (on fertile eggs) that each parent will take turns incubating and so they'll hold their poo. When they switch the egg-tired bird will go out of the nesting box and a F-O-U-L glop of nasty poo will exit the bird. Also, sometimes both parents will be in the box with eggs or chicks. Make sure mom's getting plenty of mineral block and/or cuttle bone. Hens can get egg-bound and sometimes it can be fatal.

Cockatiels are fun to keep and raise. Just don't have the cage (if they're indoor birds) too close to your wall.  :-\ >:( ;)

Ok, an update of sorts! LOL

As stated in a post above, I had a chirping noise at idle. We fixed that with some belt dressing, but it didn't last long and it was making the noise again. Kind of embarrassing at lights and in drive threws!

Today I pulled the Pinto into the garage, and we changed the belt. Ahhhh what a relief. She is as quiet as a mouse now!!! We also fixed the low speed rattle it had. The preheat shield was rattling in the front, so we fixed it the Ford way! Took some bailing wire and wrapped it around the cover and the exhaust!! LOL

I also took the mirror off, and looked at it. Couldn't really see any reason why it would not stay in position, so I put it back on. If it doesn't stay adjusted, I will see if I can find another mirror assembly to put in the housing. I don't think I have any non remote kind, so after I confirm, I may be looking for a mirror assembly!!

So finally, I can feel comfortable driving the Ghost, not have to be embarrassed about the noise it made! I get embarrassed easy! LOL  I plan on taking it shopping, actually it's going to take me shopping, lol, tomorrow. I am hoping to make it over to the upholstery shop to see how much it will cost to have the front seats redone! I know I said I was going to do that before, but I am a real big procrastinator! LOL

That's all for now! Hopefully the next update will be of the new seats!!  ;D

Sounds great, Kim!  I'm glad someone is making progress - I can't seem to get started on mine.  Had some home renovations that simply had to be done to make the house more handicapped accessible - that took up a couple of my weekends off.  Finally finished with that, only to have this past weekend monopolized by a leaking waterbed - well, actually, I should say ruptured waterbed!  Not a fun weekend and, once again, nothing accomplished on my Pinto :(.  Oh well... one of these days!

I finally made it by the upholstery shop. I got a quote for both fronts and rear, vinyl with cloth centers. Roughly same color but didn't have to be exact. The whole job will cost $750. For just the front seats, $400.

I guess I will have to keep with seat covers for now! LOL

Kim:  WOW!!!! I know it's expensive to recover seats, it cost me $200.00 a piece on my 1971, but they look great!!!!  You may have seen on my thread, I just had the silly headliner replaced in my 1971.  I bought the headliner for $50.00 on ebay, and it cost me over $650.00 to have it installed.  They have to take the silly windows out of the car to put the headliner in.  Once they got my windows out, they seen it needed a new seal around the windshield.  The seal alone was $169.00.  It was pricey, but it had to be done, and I knew I didn't have the expertise to do it.  Oh well....it's just baby steps, that's all you can do, you have a long time to get her up to snuff.  I'm anxious to see some more pix.   Talk to you later....Larry :police:

So my price sounds about right! That would be 200 a piece for the fronts and 175 a piece for the rears! My car also needs a headliner. I patched it for the time being. I haven't had any luck finding the rear window seals. I can find them for the runabouts but that is it! I don't want to take the rear out, then have no way of reinstalling it if something goes wrong!! The patch job will just have to do for now!! She's no show car anyway! LOL Although she is the one I'm showing! LOL

That's not bad it all!!

Bob (hubby) is going to go by there one day during lunch to talk to them some more. See if he can get a better deal!!! He has been dealing with them for several years, so maybe he can talk them down a bit!!  ;D

I hope he can. im two toning my seats so Ill need to pay the extra but its nothing Extravagant Just Black for the main part of the seat and a med Grey for the inserts. same with the rears. Doing a Rolls royce type theme inside the car. Hand made wood paneling included

Now, THAT'S got my attention :surprised:   I'm a RR fanatic also!  If you're going to go for a Rolls-Royce look, instead of inserts try contrasting piping.  Black with grey piping would be very classy, as would grey with black piping.  Don't forget to put in rear picnic trays!

Kim: I found a great new site on the internet, that has a catalog for Pinto parts.  They seem to carry almost anything...but I left the site name at work.  I'll try to get that emailed to you next week.  I think their front windshield seal was $129.00.  I just had my headlinger repaired, and as you know you have to have all the windows out to replace it.  They charged me $169.00 for the new windshield seal.  They're salty....it's hard to believe it costs soooooo much to restore and repair a car, that sold for new at $1,999.00......lol.lol.lol.....Larry :police:

Not much of an update, but I did get some stuff done to the Ghost today!!

I finally put the new mirror glass in her mirror body!! Thanks to Fred for the donor mirror!!

Also fixed her cig. lighter ( I hope, lol). I took the ashtray unit out and noticed the lighter itself was lose in the holder, so I just tightened it up! Then I also squeezed the power wire plug to make it fit tighter. I am hoping this has stopped the intermittent working then not working!! I plan on running my XM radio, and it needs power all the time, not just some of the time!! LOL

I installed a separate power supply too! I wanted to have an extra one to run my gps off of for the long trips to car shows!! I figure if the cig one fails, I can always run the XM off of the new supply, and run the gps off of the cig lighter. GPS can run off of its own battery for up to 4 hours, so if the cig lighter goes off and on, it will be ok for it!!

I also looked into installing a timing belt cover, but we decided that will have to wait till we have more time and when I get another Pinto running as good as the Ghost! I would like to degrease the motor and all while I'm doing the cover!

That's all for the Ghost, but what I did to her, leads to what I did to the Green Machine today! Will update her thred in a minute!! :D
