Title: This really sucks
Post by: babycheesmo on February 05, 2009, 12:30:40 AM
my 71 is finally Dead, we were coming home from my gf's work i was driving behind here in my porsche pinto ( 924) and she lost control from hitting some ice did a 360 and hit a pole, its demolished the car twisting the frame, wrinkling the roof, breaking the entire left side stearing linkages, broke the bellhousing, ripped the engine off the mounts and im pretty sure broke the transmission in half?? gear oil got everywhere. luckily she was fine just very very sad . heres a pic about 5 months ago just before we drove it from gilbert az to raleigh nc. it was the third time making that exact trip and the third time i didnt have to fix anything. thats 3 trips of 2500 miles without a single mechanical problem on a 36 year old car, and people call pintos pieces of crap they may not be able to take a hit but they sure are reliable if  you dont drive into any solid objects. and then heres the photos post meeting big wooden pole......

Im really sorry to hear about your car. It was a really good looking '71 and I know you had to love it but the thankful thing is your other love is okay. Ice is nasty stuff that causes alot of headaches for alot of people. I hope you can find another Pinto to fill the spot of you beloved '71.

Good Luck.

Very sorry, but glad nobody was injured. I hit an ice patch last week under a bridge, just after a Cadillac CTS to my right hit the same patch and swerved into me. My maneuver to get out of his way worked, but we ended up back together. No major damage at all, but you know, ice sucks.

Cheesmo,
My heart goes out to you,I can see where your car grief is resonating with our group.
BUT Let's get a bit of salvage optimism:
First , Pending major rust issues ,If Any, This car is worth a bit of bucks to anyone living in Smog Check hell in California or any state that has a Pre-76 smog check exemption. Don't dismantle yet! that VIN is worth something.
Second, It's of value to anyone who's Building a Drag Pro street car Or even a Road racing Production car. Both of these car designs replace a portion of the frame with tubular clips and put the unibody on a jig to straighten. Fenders, no big problem use fiberglass replacements. Most of the driveline will be upgraded anyway.
Finally , if nothing else, it can live on through the parts salvage process to the people restoring their cars. And you can make a few $$ too.

We can rise like a Phoenix and continue to carry the name on the streets.

Best wishes in your decision,

Pintosopher

I'm sorry to hear about your Pinto! Glad to hear that your girl is safe and still in one piece though!

Pintosopher has a good point though. I know if I ever wrecked my Pinto, even if the body was accordion'd, I would do anything to straighten it and keep it looking good and back on the road. Then again, this is my first car, and my baby!

babycheesmo,
I am very happy that your girlfreind wasn't hurt in the wreck. I have a surprise for you. I am the guy that is interested in your car, from Chapel Hill. I have been following your EBAY ads and bid on the hatch door. Yes I'm ncrebel on ebay. I hope to be able to talk to you face to face soon if I win the bid.

I am Carolina Boy and the one that just bought a 1980 Pinto wagon and was, how to say it, #@*&ed.

Are you interested in another Pinto? There is a man selling one in Apex, a 1977. I was going to go look at it today or Monday.

It's nice to know there is another Pinto lover in the neighborhood.

Yah that really sucks. Im scared to death that afer 6 years of working on my project that some goofball will pull out in front of me or whatever. BANG... 6 years and my first car down the tubes. I managed to keep it "shiny" side up for 15 years of driving it daily. Hope i get another 15 at least. But you never know waht lies around each and every corner.

Sorry again man and i hope that you can get another one soon as nice as that one was. GL

Sorry for your loss, but happy for what you didn't lose. We all share the sentiment. But I agree, I'm an organ donor, and if my car dies, I want it to be an organ donor too!
