Title: New in these parts...
Post by: entropy on February 02, 2009, 02:06:48 PM
Hi all!  I am both a new member to these forums and a new Pinto owner as of 2 weeks ago.  The new ride is a 1972 Runabout with a fairly nasty 289 small block Ford backed by a T5.  It's got an 8 point cage, a built 8" rear with posi and a whole lot of other fun go-fast parts.  At the moment, I'm trying to get in touch with some of the previous owners/builders of this car to nail down all the details about it...particuarly that trans.  At this point, I can confidently say that the car is scary-fast, noisy as hell and puts a big, stupid smile on my face every time I start it.

Hi,  :welcome:
I'm guessing your trans is from an 80's Mustang and has the good 3.35 1st gear. The tag, if it is still attached to the trans side, will have a 3 digit number like 162 in the coding. I can look up any trans using this number if you need. Lots of great info on this site ;D

Thanks!  I'll climb under this weekend and take a look.  Now, but "good" do you mean strong, or as in a favorable ratio?  'Cause the 4.11 rear end makes first gear pretty much only usable for pulling stumps  ;-)

Well, I must admit that the lighting in that photo is doing the paint a lifetime's worth of favors.  As Han Solo would say "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts".  Besides....isn't "patina" the current thing with the hot rod crowd anyway?

If it is the 3.35 you could drop to a 3.80 gear and still be plenty low in 1st and improve milage.
But hey you got 4 more gears to thrash thru. Just drive it like you stole it.

Well, between the 4.11 rear and the 350 lb/ft of torque at the wheels, plenty of low is not a problem  ;D

I assure you, driving it like I stole it is absolutely within the boundaries of my plans for this car.  Sure...there will be cruising and rod runs (though actual car shows might be a bit of a stretch based on the semi-rough exterior), but from time to time I'm just going to take it out of the garage and beat on it like it owes me money.  Before I do that, however, I want to talk to the guy who rebuilt the trans 2 owners ago.  With the kind of torque this small block is putting down, it would do my cautious nature some good to know whether that rebuild included beefing it up with G-Force components.

More than happy to!  Is there a gallery I can upload to, or is that only for Charter Members.  And, while we're at it, how does a guy...a regular Joe like myself...become one of those?

*edit*  Aha!  I should have read the stickies!

Good eye!  The guy happened to be close enough for me to go look at it and I fell in love with it immediately.
