Title: What's a tranny worth?
Post by: pintogirl on January 29, 2009, 09:40:49 PM
A friend sent me an email about a tranny for sale. It said to make an offer. Didn't say what year or anything, you have to call for details.

Let's say that this tranny is one that will work in my 71 Pinto with a 1600 engine, stick shift. It's in good working condition. What do you think I should offer?

I am clueless on the value of this kind of stuff, thought I'd ask you guy's then call the guy tomorrow!!!

Thanks
Kim

I'm surprised nobody responded to your question.

As to what its worth,,,,, I'v always heard it said "its worth whatever somebody will pay"  But that doesn't help you much.

Back when I was working,,,, I'd pay (the salvage yards) about $150.00 to $200.00 for a WORKING & GUARANTEED transmission.

Seems to me that I'v seen a complete "Engine & transmission" advertised (on this site) for a few hundred dollars.
Assuming you already had the transmission, and took it to a rebuilder, the cost would be around $400.00

So the answer is... If you needed it !
Completely rebuilt, with a guarantee (about) $400.00 plus the "core value"
Whats it worth "used" and god only knows if its any good. maybe a token amount.  I wouldn't go over $50.00.  The core value !

But I don't think you stated a few things
Is it new, used, whatever !
Do you need it, or are you just thinking it'd be nice to have etc.
Does he think its worth something, or he just wants to be rid of it

Thanks for the reply!

Actually I did get a PM from another member about this question!!!

I don't know anything about the tranny yet. I was just trying to get a ball park range of prices!! With the info in the PM and the info from you, I am thinking I will offer 50 bucks for it.  I'm pretty sure it is just a used tranny.

I will call the person later today!!

Thanks again
Kim

  Yea, that sounds good !

Assuming I'm not too late with this reply......   Let him set a price FIRST.  You could ALWAYS offer him anything you want ($50,00 is fine) but it'd be a real kick in the a** if he was thinking something less.

Good Luck,,,,,  Jim at jimspinto

Thanks again
