How can I tell if the head has been decked too many times?

How can I tell if the block has been decked too many times?

Good question. I know there is a distance on the head, from the deck to the valve cover mating surface that will indicate how much has been removed off the head. I need to look in my files for that measurement. As far as the block go's ????? dont know.

Deck height is measured from the crank centerline to the head mating surface. My trusty Haynes manual doesn't list this measurement though

Esslinger racing catalog has a measurement for the head:

Measure from where your rocker cover sits on the head to the block mating surface.     2.0 stock length = 3.728
                2.3 stock length = 3.800

The block measurement would be how far the piston sticks above the block surface into the headgasket(remember to use a compressed gasket)

The head planing gains compression and reduces piston to valve clearance, spark plug to piston clearance.

Plan your cuts.
