Title: rear gears
Post by: pintoman on September 14, 2004, 06:41:32 PM
Need new rear end [for the pinto].The rear spider gears bit the dust.I have a 7.5 with a 3.45 posi that i can put in ,but i would rather have a 8" out back.Less trouble and a quicker fix.

Looks like a 7.5 is going to go in.8" rear axels are hard to find in this area. The 7.5 is free [my kind of price],i know it will fit and it will take alot of work. But in the long run it will be worth it.

Before you put your 7.5 in, pull the rear cover and remove the center diff pin and check for perfect straightness. If it's a Posi, it most likely came out of a v-8 car and I've seen more than a few 5.0's bend the pin and bust the spiders. That's why they finally went to the 8.8 (the same rear as the 1/2 ton truck).

7.5's also came in rangers and Bronco II's with limited slip.  Also in aerostars, but not sure if they were LS or not...

Pintoman, where are you located?  I've got an 8" in a 76 bobcat wagon that I'll let go if you can come get it.  Its an open 3:00, but from what I understand its not hard to make them LS.  I'm in Dinwiddie, Va.  Let me know.

The 7.5 is already to go,the gears have been set up and checked. All it needs is the axel shafts and brake backing plates.
