How do you go about replacing the part where the key goes into the steering colum? My wagon, a 1974 was broken into with the pre. owner and somebody tried to steal it. They took a set of chanel locks and spun the igniton so all it does now is goes around in a circle. now its kind of a funky way to start it and I'm tired of my friends laughing at it when we go cruisin. Any help would be great!! ???
Disconnect the battery ( don't wanna do the electric boogaloo)
Remove the nuts securing the steering column and lower the column out from that support bracket
Disconnect the ignition switch wire plug
Remove the nuts that hold the switch to the column
Take the actuator arm from the switch, lift it off the column studs
When installing MAKE SURE THE NEW IGNITION IS IN LOCK
Connect arm to plunger
Put the new switch on the studs and start the nuts on the studs
Move the switch up and down the column checking for the play in the arm, with the switch at the middle of the play tighten the nuts
Put the column back together
Connect the battery, say 3 "Hail Pinto full of gas", cross your fingers and give it a whirl
Hope this helps! Steve
Thank you, sounds like a good rainy day project in Wa. St. Speaking of rain, hows the rest of the good ole US of A doing, you guy OK in the gulf coast?
Starting to get a little windy here in Arkansas. My sister lives 20 miles east of Pensacola and has decided to ride it out. I got my Pinto from St. Petersburg between Charley and Frances hitting down there.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't he looking on how to replace the lock cylinder? I thought that's what he wanted replaced as the outter part just turns around in typical Ford fashion...
If not, I'm sorry I spoke.
Your right r4pinto, I was kinda drunk when I read the earler post and it sounded good last night, but I need to replace the lock cylinder, I should hire the guys in the movies to do it, like gone in 60 secounds, there fast.
Need to get you a Haynes manual. Shows diagrams on how to do it.
I emailed you the pages from my Haynes manual dealing with this. Did you get them?
Yes, thank you. ;D
