Well... got my 1971 Ford Pinto trunk model from Washington State on January 7, 2009. It's in great shape for what I've paid for it. It came with Ford Mustang 15 inch rims on it, and I'm replacing those with original Ford Pinto 13 inch rims, in a large part due to the help of Dave at smallfryefarms. It also had Mustang seats in it, and I wanted them replaced. Found some great original 1971 seats while salvaging, and they're at the upholstery shop being recovered as we speak. I seen them today, and they look nothing short of fantastic. Currently the Pinto is at the mechanics, and it's getting a new alternator, condenser, tie rod, alternator, and new tires. I hope to have the interior done by the end of April, and new paint on it by the fall. Hope you enjoy the pix. Larry :police:
01/15/2009 Hey!!! got the seats back from the upholstery shop today, all I can say is WOW!!!!!! They look amazing. The seats were recovered in the original 1971 Ford fabric, but they modified the design of the seats, to give them a more modern and sporty look. The best part was, it was very reasonable. I only paid $40.00 more to have each seat totally recovered, than I did to repair one panel on my 1972 Pinto. I like the seats so well, I'm even considering having the rear seat recovered, even though the original fabric and seams look great. If I decide to recover the rear seat, I'll have it done in April when I have the new headliner installed. My brother manages a tire store in Muncie, Indiana, and he's got it mechanically up to snuff, and put on the new 13 inch tires today. He sent me a text with the pix of the new whitewall tires, the car is really coming along. Anyway, just wanted to update my progress..... Larry :police:
Larry!
Sounds like you're off to a good start! I wish it was warmer here so I could get something done on mine!
Dwayne
My brother called me today and said the tie rod will be another 5 or so days coming in. Well that's okay :), he has it stored inside a heated garage :). I was able to locate the new carpet in Ohio and ordered that yesterday, and I will be ordering the new dash cap today, when I get home. Tomorrow a buddy and I are going salvaging, looking for a right front bumper guard and front turn signal lenses. I know they're at the salvage yard I found in Greenfield, Indiana, so they won't be a problem to find 8). I'm going to need a new grille, and I think the Pinto's grille in Greenfield is broken :accident:. But, I'll find one soon enough I guess. Everything is going according to plan, and the Pinto will be getting a fantastic face lift over the next couple of months. I am really loving this car :-*. Looking forward to warmer weather, which will surely help in it's restoration. Will be posting pix, once I get it home and can start the photo documentation.
Larry :police:
larry looking forward to seeing the pixs, glad to see your progress is moving along so well. I hope to get back on mine some time next week after i catch up on the honey do jobs. I guess i should not say catch up just knock a few off the list.
Larry:
Is that Reed's Pinto? It's cool that you're putting the 13's back on. 13" tires are getting harder to find, especially in sport and wide sizes. It's cool that you have access to a tire shop. Coker has some but they're more like 64 Falcon tires than the original pinto tires. Are you in Indiana? I spent a few summers around Connersville/Richmond when I was in my 20s. Nice place to be. Car looks great, keep up the good work!
Chuck
Discolives78:
Yes this is Reed's Pinto.... and I'm really happy to have it. I went and seen it today, they had it sitting outside. Apparently when they got the new inner tie rod in, it was not compatible with the original outer; therefore, they have the new outer ordered, and the car will be finished when that comes in next week. Went to the junk yard today in Greenfield, Indiana and one in Modoc, Indiana, to look for some things the Pinto needed. Anyway, came up in bust in Greenfield, but when I went to Modoc, I found a bumper guard, turn signal lens, gas cap, and a vent knob. Bought them all for $20.00, I thought that was a steal. I have a buddy from work who's restoring a 1966 Chevrolet Corvair, I've dubbed the "CORVIEKE", because of his name. He loves to go salvaging with me, and we had a blast today. As a matter of fact, I think I wore him out, and he's half my age. I'm glad to see the younger folks appreciate the beauty of a Pinto. Anyway, if you were in the Connersville/Richmond area you've tread some of my old stomping grounds. I worked in the Connersville/Richmond area for 9 years in the mid 70's to early 80s as a police dispatcher and motor carrier officer. I loved that area, but later moved on to another career path. Anyway, I'm sure we've got some stories we could share. Anyway, Reed has given me a fantastic toy to enjoy, this car is becoming very special to me, and I'm having the time of my life restoring it. I'll keep posting pix during it's progress, and keep you all informed on how I'm doing with it. Reed is probably going to want it back, once he sees how great it's gonna look. Like I posted earlier, the seats are just beautiful, and I'm getting more and more anxious for warm weather, so I can work on it. Have a great day..... Larry
Dave: smallfryefarms:
Yes, the car is coming along nicely, with great thanks to you. The rims worked great, and the new tires really look fantastic on this little piece of history. I'm really looking forward to this summer, when it's going to be easier to work on. I did find some parts I needed today while salvaging, and got a great buy. Hopefully, sometime this summer, when you make a trip to Eaton Ohio, I can meet you there for coffee and lunch, and show off this great little car. Hey!!!! thanks again for your help with the rims, I have really appreciated your generosity. Have a great day ;D Larry :police:
Well... got the new carpet ordered last week, and thanks to Mom and Dad, I've now ordered the new dash cap. Had my family Christmas with Mom and Dad this weekend, and I'm using their Christmas gift to buy my new dash cap, and a new vent knob for the driver's side of the Pinto. My Buddy, John, who has the 1966 Chevrolet Corvair "The Corvieke" as we've dubbed it, and I went salvaging on Friday, and found a driver's side turn signal lens, bumper guard (not the correct one), vent knob, and gas cap. I think the only thing I can use for now is the turn signal lens. Anyway, the project is coming along nicely, and I'm anxious for warmer weather, to ease in the work on the project, and also to drive it more.
You wouldn't have any trouble with those Mustang wheels rubbing on the A-arms would you?
Well, not really sure, except the gentleman I bought the Pinto from said if you turned too sharp, the tires would rub. Since I didn't drive it once it came in with the 15 inch tires and rims, I really can't answer truthfully. I just didn't like the idea of having such large tires and rims on a car designed for smaller ones. Plus, I just like having it in an original type form, vs any modifications from the original design. I'm sure I'll be happier with what I want out of a Pinto, by just having the 13 inch rims and tires back in place. This is a great little car, and I'm looking forward to driving it. Was missing a seat knob on the driver's side seat I found while salvaging. Fortunately, I found one through an Ebay seller, and he's shipping it to me now. I think that's the last interior piece I need, with the exception of a factory radio, which I'm in no hurry to find..... Larry :police:
Well, the dash cap arrived yesterday for the 1971 Pinto (Reeds Pinto), and I got the new vent knob and mechanism over the weekend. I've ordered the new grille and front bumper guard from Frank Morgan, and they're coming soon. The new carpet arrived today. If the car gets out of the shop this weekend, we may have some warmer weather, and I may get to start on it. If nothing else, I'll dye the plastic seat parts, and maybe paint the rims. Lovin it!!!!!!!!!! Larry :police:
Glad to see it went to a good home and you are taking care of it! I no longer own a Pinto, but I will watch this thread to see how my old one gets fixed up. Good luck with it!
hope to see pics soon
Word of advice on the carpet.
Take it out of the box, totally unfold it and let it sit in a warm room of the house to let the wrinkles and bubble smooth themselves out. I have some bubbles in my carpet and fitting it didn't come out so well because I rushed the install. Take your time on the carpet, that stuff isn't cheap and is about 40% of your interior!
Reed: Hey!!!!! I do love the Pinto, I'm really looking forward to enjoying it this summer. It's a great car, I'll take good care of it.
Dave: Thanks for the advise on the carpet, Yeah!!!!!! I'll do that, didn't even think about that. You're right the carpet will work wonders on the interior, but the seats are what's the real beauty.
75bobcatv6: I will be posting pictures, I don't really have any now, but once I get it home, I'll start with a lot of before pictures, and will take pictures, during it's restoration. It'll be a beautiful little Pinto. Will work on the rims, once I get her home from the shop. They're still having problems with the passenger side tie rods, hope to have that fixed this week.
I am having them check the rear end and bearings in the back axle too. Reed had posted at some point there was a noise in the rear end, so they're going to check it out. Hopefully, all the mechanicals will be completed.
When I got the new seat knob for the driver's side seat, it made the passenger seat knob look really bad, so I ordered a new passenger seat knob today. Didn't think I'd ever find these little critters, but fortunately, found a person with some old stock, and they are brand new. What a great find!!!!!!
Larry :police:
Yeah. I have spoken to people in the Ford parts department and they say that there are always people coming in and asking for several NOS parts in large quantities, and the buyers sell them and make a very sizable profit!
Last year I replaced my carpet and dash pad, it made the car soo much nicer! I was planning to do my front seats and headliner this year but debt from what was supposed to be my wife has caught up with me. :( All in due time! :D
Dave1987: Well I've been blessed  with a new job, that gives me a little extra spending money. I have wanted a Pinto as a toy for years, but was just never able to afford it . Raising 3 kids, and working for peanuts, didn't allow much luxury items. I would sit for hours on ebay and look at some of these beautiful pieces of Ford history, and I knew someday I'd have one. Well luck has had it, I now have 2, and I'll never get rid of them. I was going to do a few things at a time to the 1971, but I've been able to move forward a little faster than I thought :fastcar:. Today helped, Fred Morgan mailed me the bumper guard I ordered from him, it arrived today. The bumper guard looks brand new, I'm very pleased. Your car is beautiful :), and with time, you'll have her finished. I hope the 1971 is done by the time of an all Ford car show in Middletown, Indiana in September..... we'll see...... Larry :police:
Well.... got the grille yesterday from Fred Morgan, WHAT A RESOURCE we have in him.....I'm so glad I found him on this site. The grille was fantastic ;D, and will look great on the trunk model. I also got the other seat knob today in the mail, now both my new seats will have fantastic looking release knobs on them, wow!!!!! The trunk model is still in the shop, all's done on it with the exception of the tie rods on the front passenger side :(. Apparently, the new inner tie rod, doesn't match up with the old outer tie rod. Therefore, the shop is attempting to get both, which will cohabitate nicely with each other. They're hoping to have it done this week. I went ahead, while they had it, and told them to check the rear wheel bearings. Reed mentioned in an earlier post there was a noise in the rear, wasn't sure if it was the bearings or rearend. Might as well have them do something to it while they've got it. It's kinda been a God send  having it take so long for the tie rods, it's been inside a heated garage now for nearly 6 weeks, so that's been a positive. Well, I'll keep posting my progress, and pictures just as soon as I get my new baby home!!!! Larry :police:
Well.... I've been trying to post before and after pictures of my 1971 Pinto seats. I bought these seats from a salvage yard in Greenfield, Indiana, and they came from a 1972 Pinto Runabout. The Pinto had all it's windows, and the seats had after market seat covers on them. I'm assuming that's what kept the seats in such remarkable condition. Anyway, I had the seats recovered, and they're ready to put in my 1971 Pinto I got from Reed in Washington State, once this silly weather breaks. Anyway, hope you enjoy the pictures, they don't do the new seats justice. The seats are nothing short of amazing in how they look. They will look great once installed in the 71.
The black seats are going to look great in that car!
Chuck :afro:
Sounds like you hard at work! ;D Hope to see pictures soon and hope your progress goes as smooth as it can when dealing with a 30+ year old car.
-beegle55
Yeah!!! the problem is I keep seeing things others are doing with their Pintos, and I want to do it too. Oh well, I guess I'll get things done with mine, whenever I can. Can't wait for warm weather, I'm really looking forward to working on it.
Even those who are doing things to their cars feel lethargic from time to time. For instance, I really didn't want to do the ball-joints on my car, and put it out of commission for three days, but it had to be done if I am going to take it on road trips this year. I should get the seat hinge covers on mine, as well as the dash panel, but I'm feeling lazy and don't want to do anything right now. :(
Dave1987,
Caffeine , Lots of it , I'm on my 8th cup now :amazed: Lights up your mind!
All other substances could be considered illegal
Pintosopher
Well... you know.... I get those days where I just don't want to do anything either, but I haven't even had the 71 home yet. It's been sitting in a heated garage for the last six weeks (lucky there), waiting to get mechanical work and new tires. Dave1987, just feel fortunate you have the knowledge to install the ball joints. I can do minor repairs; but ball joints; never done them; probably could if I knew how. Anyway, I'm waiting for the installation of my new ball joints, and that should conclude all the mechanical work the 71 needs. Once I get her home, I'm going to be hot and heavy on the interior. Then a Macquires 3 step wax process, WOW!!!!! I can't wait to get her beautiful. Pintosopher, oh yeah!!!!! Coffee, that's what I need.
I had no clue as to what I was doing when doing the ball joints, it was my first time EVER touching anything major on the suspension. I changed the shocks last year, but that was all the experience I had. Clymers, Haynes and Chiltons manuals had not one word on the process of ball joint replacement aside from stating that Ford says you must change the entire control arm!
I had done some extensive research the past few months on it, as I knew I was going to be doing it myself. I had done some picking here and there learning some ball joint stuff in the past year though, just to get the gist of things.
My determination to get mechanical things done, is that I am VERY stubborn, and protective of my Pony. I have always been one to do EVERYTHING myself, no matter what it is. I just keep the mind set that, it will be one more thing I will know how to do, I will have the pride to say I did it myself, and I will know exactly how it was done and what problems were encountered. I will NEVER put my Pony in a shop if I can help it. Alignment is the only thing. I will send it out for paint though, but that's about it. Determination is everything, knowledge is power!
I love working on my Pony, and being able to tell people that I have never had my car in a shop in the past 20 years except for an alignment (I know the car's history, it's been in the family since it was new). People don't believe me most of the time, but I still know the truth!
Pintosopher, I had LOTS of caffeine the past week, and am still coming down off of it. Tuesday night through Thursday morning I didn't sleep one wink, Friday morning I slept 6 hours, Friday night through Sunday morning I didn't sleep and Sunday morning I slept till 7:30 at night. Working grave yard really doesn't help my schedule, but as I said, I was determined to get those ball joints done! :)
Okay Dave.... Yes you're right, I just need to jump in with both feet and learn some of this stuff. I'll wait until after I get the 71 back, since it's pretty much done. The good news is, it's in a shop where I know the owner (honest as the day is long), and my brother manages it. So I know it's in good hands. I'll keep you posted as I experiment with the joys of mechanics. Thanks for the advice, I'll do it.
Larry :police:
Dave ,
Not to diminish your dedication to self-reliance or your concern for safety protocols, You accomplished on of the dirtiest most dangerous under-car jobs by doing it by the book.
I stopped using Pickle forks after my first Ball Joint job at age 17. I later bought the "Rocker arm" tool for separating the joint from the knuckle. Cutting the rivets off with the Control arm in a vise like you did. I'm sure that my job wasn't done much sooner than yours. But My '55 Chevy had the most immaculate Chevy orange and gloss black control arms when I was done. I even Loosely assembled the whole Knuckle assy and upper& Lower arms and put upstairs in my room to dry the paint for a week
Thirty years of being around professionals ,reading a LOT, and then actually
seeing the Techs working alongside me ,taught me a few tricks too! Keep at it, and always remember "it's never a bad Idea to crack a Service manual open" just don't get discouraged at the "special tools" they use to write the manuals. (European vehicles)
Oh Yeah,
Use Melatonin to reset your Sleep patterns for Shift work. At your age it won't take much. .5 Mg , it's over the counter. I Have to use this stuff at my age..
Pintosopher
Larry, don't let your fear of things keep you from doing anything. I think I get my stubbornness from my father, as well as the want to do things myself. Anyone can do what a shop says, and my shop manuals have helpped immensely, the Haynes more so than the others. Even I feel like giving up now and then and just sending the car out to get fixed by a professional, then I remember that I'm basically broke and wouldn't be able to afford the work anyway, so I do it myself with what I can and the job gets done in the end. Keep up the hard work, you won't regret it in the end, I promise!
Pintosopher, it's good to hear I am not the only one crazy enough to do these things myself at a young age with little experience. I was told to use a special tool to separate the tie rod ends, but I just removed the castle bolt from the stud, put a regular one on (flush with the end of the stud, so as not to disfigure it), and then smacked it with a 5lb hammer three times and it popped right out. Undid the bolt and the tie-rod end came right down. Getting the new R&P boots on was another story... I will look into this Melatonin you speak of.
Also, these forums and Google have been A LOT of help for my repairs. Lots of research, even if it is exhausting. Remember, it is better to know more and do it semi-correct the first time, rather then have to start over again with a new car if your original car is trashed in the process.
Oh! One more....I go into my projects thinking "anything can be fixed, as long as you have the will power to do it!". This has served me well over the years. I have fixed things from power supplies, computers, VCRs, DVD players, TVs, soft-serve ice cream machines at work, and my car with these ethics. It might take more to fix some things than others, but in reality, anything can be fixed (even cheaply!) as long as the person who is fixing it WANTS it fixed.
I like fixing my car myself, and I'll tackle some pretty big jobs, but I haven't ever done ball joints, either. I've read books and online, and have the 'jist' of it. The only time my car was in any kind of shop since I've had it was a muffler shop (catalytic converter), and a tire shop (I know how to dismount and remount them, I'm just not equipped anymore.)
Chuck
Well...... my brother called me today, the 1971 Pinto trunk model I got from Reed in Washington State was finished, and ready to come home. Let's see....New alternator, condenser, tie rods, oil change, tires, front end alignment, rear bearings serviced, and oh yes.....they thought I needed a new battery. I was afraid to hear what I owed them....well it was about half of what I expected, whew!!!!!They all applauded when I left the garage (It's been there since January 7, 2009 when it arrived in Muncie). It's a good size garage, and sits on one of the busiest streets in Muncie, Indiana.... I think people all thought they were stark raving mad!!!!! hahaha  The fuel gauge was on empty, there was a service station across the street, so I stopped, put in some lead additive and sea foam....filled her up with premium fuel....and prayed I'd get home. Eureka, the car ran like a new one. Got her home, unloaded all the spare parts Reed left for me, and began to clean. I took a mild soap and water and cleaned the whole interior, then went back over it with windex. Cleaned all the windows and vacuumed it out. It doesn't look new, but it looks really good. By the way, I'm taking the seats out that came with it, looks like maybe an 80s model Mustang seat, they need a home, will give them to you for shipping charges only, if anyone wants them. They will come with tracks. Anyway, I'm going to go through the parts Reed left in the car, there are some things I won't be needing, so I'll sell those things pretty cheap. Looks like a decent luggage rack for a sedan Pinto, a dash and mostly what it'd need to install air. Oh yeah!!!! I also have seats out of a late 70's model Pinto, they're pretty nice, will let them go cheap. I'll post everything in the next month that I won't be needing, I'll not charge much, because I know how difficult it is to find everything you need for your Pinto, and I've had a lot of help from my good friends at Fordpinto.com. Well I'll be posting pictures as soon as possible, probably this weekend, of what it looks like emptied out and cleaned. Then will post my progress pictures, as I proceed with the restoration. Looks like the whole car will need painted, hope to get that done this summer. Thought I could spot paint, don't think so... will know more once I wash and wax her. Well for now.....just say a little prayer I'll do well with the restoration...I'm really excited about this car, I think I love it.hahahaha  Larry :police:
Sounds like you still have things rollin with the pinto larry. Good to hear. I took a couple evenings and spent on mine this week. I now have my engine assembled. Got my trans now and just got my new clutch and flywheel in the mail. I have to still do a few mods to the engine compartment before i can set it in.
Cant wait to take her down the road, it is killlin me. Anyway keep up the good work larry, Good to talk at you.
David
Okay... it's 23 degrees in Muncie, Indiana today, but I couldn't wait any longer, I had to do something to the 1971 Pinto I got from Reed in Washington State. The battery was dead, had to jump it, but not before adding a new solenoid. I must have left something on, as it's a new battery. I took the Mustang seats out of it, and removed the carpet. Since it's the trunk model, there's a ledge in the rear window, and it had holes in it due to past installed speakers. I made a new board today for it, that fits perfectly. I'll cover it with speaker carpet, and it'll look great back there. I took the rear seat out also. Wow!!!!! the back of the seat was attached to Masonite, which doesn't give it much strength. The Masonite had gotten wet, and it's really old and buckled. The vinyl of the seat was held onto it by staples, so I removed them, and removed the seat portion from the Masonite. I used this piece of Masonite as a pattern, and made me a new backing, out of new Masonite. There's a piece of fabric that holds the back of the seat to the Masonite, which is rotted, so I'm going to take the seat to the upholstery shop, and have them reattach the vinyl section to the Masonite, and make any necessary repairs. If I'm going to do it, I may as well do it right. I also repaired the vent pull knob, which was just hanging under the dash. It's not attached securely to the dash. I then took off the painted and cracked black grille, and attached the new silver one I got from Fred Morgan. Fred also had a bumper guard which I was missing, and that's been installed also. I'm hoping the weather breaks soon, so I can start painting the inside and dyeing the vinyl. I'm anxious to get the inside all pulled together. I do have photographs, just don't know how to load them into the computer yet, my daughter is coming over, so she'll do that for me, and I'll post some pix. Anyway, it's taking shape, and I finally got my feet wet with it.
I guess pinto fever finally got you too.
Well took the back of the rear seat to the upholstery shop today. They said they can fix it just like new. There's a channel that fits on the rear of the car, at the ledge of the back window. This channel accommodates the top of the seat, to lock it into place. This channel was plastic and has deteriorated; therefore, they're going to fashion something for that too :amazed:. I think I've got a real find with this upholstery shop. It's suppose to warm up to the 60's this Sunday, so guess who's going to be dying some vinyl parts of the interior of this car ;D. I'm getting really anxious. It's taking shape nicely.
Larry :police:
Okay: Wanted to post some pix of the new 13 inch rims I had installed, and the new original Pinto hub caps. If you recall, the owner prior to Reed had put 15 inch Mustang rims on this Pinto. I had them removed and replaced with original Pinto 13 inch rims. Also you'll see the Mustang seats which had been installed also. I've removed these seats, and will replace with original Pinto seats. I will post pictures of the stripped out Pinto in the next posting. Larry :police:
Now.... here's what the interior looks like stripped of it's Mustang seats and the carpet Reed had installed. It's now ready for any painting and dyeing of the interior I'll be doing, hopefully over the next few days. Larry :police:
"Git'r'done" Larry ;D
Chuck
Guess I should just show a pix of the 1971 Pinto parked at it's new home, just resting comfortably. I think it's a little afraid of me, as I'm taking it through so many changes all at once. Anyway, glad to have the pony, really looking forward to some interior painting and dyeing this weekend, we're suppose to be in the upper 60's... yeah!!!!! :amazed: Larry :police:
Well....it was 70 plus degrees today...got Pinto fever. Wife and I took off for the weekend, didn't get home until after supper today, but I had to wash the Pinto, and clean the chrome. It looks amazing :amazed:, just getting the street crud off it, which accumulated during it's transport. Tomorrow, if the weather holds off, I plan on completing the Macquires 3 step wax process. Have done this to cars in the past, and they come out shining like a new dime ;D. I'll post pictures, as soon as it's waxed, to show how great I'm sure it'll look. Larry :police:
Well... I got the back of the rear seat back from the upholstery shop this week. They were able to mount the old seat fabric, to the new Masonite board I cut for it. I'm posting a picture of the back of it, showing the new Masonite board, and the front of it, showing how great it looks after the repair. The upholstery shop was even able to make a new clamp for me, so it'd mount okay when I install it. They are great!!!!!!
Awesome. Turned out nicely and I'm beginning to consider having my seats re-done. It's really all my interior needs if you discount the slight wear in the carpet and the one crack on the dash pad. The seats have a good bit of both wear and tear, but the material itself is in good shape. I was wondering if I could find someone to cut out the original fabric inserts and stitch it to new black vinyl. And the rear seat has the top threading starting to pull lose and I was wondering if someone could fix that. All theoretical. Sorry to steal the thread lol your back seat looks great!
-beegle55
For some reason I can only post 2 pictures at a time on my thread, or I would have posted this one on my last posting. Anyway, it was near 60 degrees today, and I decided to do the Meguiar's 3 step wax process on the 71 Pinto I got from Reed in Washington State. For those who are not familiar with Meguiar's you start with Step 1 a paint cleaner that's applied, then Step 2 a polish you apply, then Step 3 the Carnuba wax you apply. This took me about 3 hours, but the results were amazing. Mequiar's is about the best wax product I've ever used and have heard of none which could be better. Anyway, the car looks amazing, hope you enjoy this post.
How does your back feel after that?? :hypno: But the car looks great! The work was worth it. Where I live it really isn't worth it because I live out a dusty farm road and have a dirt/gravel driveway that instantly ruins any painstaking wash job you have. :-\
-beegle55
Hey Beegle55, glad you are enjoying my posts. Anyway, I know what interior you have, and you know, it's not as expensive as you think to make these repairs. If it's just your center part of the seats (Indian print type fabric I believe you have), then they can replace only that fabric, for around here maybe $100.00 per seat or less. I had my complete seat recovered for around $200.00 each, which included the fabric. The back seat repair which I just had done was only around $5.00 for the Masonite board, and then $35.00 for the upholstery shop to finish. My interior will look great. Oh yeah.... I got a new dash cap, for I think around $75.00 which included shipping. Carpet, well if you go with ebay $119.00 to $150.00 for just the passenger area of your Pinto. Anyway, hey you're young yet, you have plenty of time, just remember your folks can get you a lot of this stuff for your special holidays, just ask Santa  OH YEAH!!!!! I HAVE AN ELECTRIC BUFFER, MAKES WAXING SOOOOOO MUCH EASIER..... Larry :police:
I'm going to ask around and see what I can find out about having the front seats re-done. The worst of my interior is the front seats. Everything else is nice, rear seats mint, headliner perfect, and the carpet isn't really bad enough to replace so I'm holding on that. Its an old car and people still appreciate the beauty of it and are stunned and on first glance the minor flaws aren't really noticed
-beegle55
Beegle55, if your carpet isn't torn, and is only faded or stained try this. Go to your auto parts store, and look for something called Carpet/Fabric/Vinyl paint. This is great stuff, I've used it a lot. Anyway, it will dye your carpet back to it's original beauty. It works great. It should only take about 2 cans, and the cans run about $7.00 each. Just take your front and rear seats out. Mask off the rest of your interior to protect from overspray, and just go to town. Your carpet will look fantastic. This may even make the other imperfections in your interior less noticeable. Good luck!!!!!!!! Larry :police:
Okay...beautiful weather today, around 60 degrees, so I took advantage of the situation. I sanded all the rims I just put on the 1971 Pinto, thanks to smallfryefarms, primed and then painted them (including the spare). They look fantastic, as you can tell from the photo. The rims were the original gray color, with not much rust, but a little. I sanded the rust off, then put some good primer on them, and then painted them black, like I have on my 1972. I also took the jack, jack handle, and other accessories out of the trunk, sanded, primed, and painted them, as you'll see in the next photo. Anyway, didn't take a lot of time, but it needed to be done. I would have gotten more completed, but my 5 year old Grandaughter, wanted to go to a birthday party, so I took her. That's much better than working on my car. Anyway, hope you enjoy the pictures.
Hey Larry!
Your back seat looks great! The upholstery shops here charge a bit more, so you got a pretty good bargain! That red paint sure took to shining, didn't it! The wheels and jack stuff look great too. It's all about tweaking the details, I've been doing that for almost 6 years now. Car looks great!
Chuck
discolives78: Yes, you're right, it's all about details. I just love this car, and am enjoying this great weather to work on it. I am blessed with a great upholstery shop. They are not only friendly when I go in, but they also listen very closely to what I need, and they take care of it. I think their prices are very reasonable, and the quality of their work is superior. The rims do look nearly new, they sanded and painted up nicely. I'm going to paint the inside of the trunk this weekend, that is if the weather stays nice. I hope to go home tonight, and paint the brake and gas pedals, along with the emergency brake handle. If I have time, I want to paint the radiator tonight too, along with the battery tie down. Hopefully I can start painting and dying the interior this weekend also. We'll see.
Great weather last night when I got home from work. I sanded, primed, and painted the emergency brake handle, and the arms to the brake and gas pedals. I went ahead and took the horn off along with the battery tie down, sanded, primed, and painted them also. I'll not be able to hit the radiator until Thursday evening, but some of the small things are getting done. From what I hear the weekend will be great, I'll probably get the dying and interior painting all done on Friday. The Pinto is taking shape.
Well...the weather hung around 50 degrees today 8), but I couldn't wait, so I sanded and painted the radiator and surrounding area. Yes... I know it was probably too cold :hypno:, but the paint seemed to be drying, I'm sure it will. It looks incredible ;D. I had earlier painted the fan shroud, so I bought the hardware today to reinstall it. It'll go on tomorrow, once the paint on and around the radiator is dry. I have cleaned up all the vinyl pieces, and they are out of the car. Should dye them tomorrow also. Anyway, progressing at a snails pace, but it's looking good . Larry :police:
I can't wait to see some pics!! ;D
Well great news !!!! I was able to paint the radiator last night, and the battery tray today, yoo hoo!!!!! I also took all the vinyl pieces out of the car today, and dyed them with the black vinyl/carpet/upholstery dye. All the vinyl looks fantastic. I also cleaned the trunk area and painted it with the trunk paint you can buy at your local parts store. The trunk looks new. Last but not least I was able to purchase a chrome tailpipe extension, and added that today. It gives the car a great new sporty :fastcar: look. I'm posting some pictures so you can see how great it looks. I'm going to paint the dash and doors tomorrow, if the weather holds out. Larry :police:
Again, for some reason I can post only 2 pictures at a time, so here's my new tailpipe, it looks sweet!!!!!!! Larry :police:
Hey Larry!
Your trunk looks awesome! I can't wait to see pics of the interior. Let's see if I can help you with the picture dilemna. I just did this post last night, if you haven't had a chance to read it, it may help us see what you see! ;D

Chuck :afro:
Well... it looks like the weather will be beautiful today, so I'm going to work on painting the doors and dash (a little worried about it). I wanted to get all this done, because I'm taking the car in a couple of weeks to get a new headliner installed. I don't want to put the interior parts back in, with the exception of the driver's seat, until I get the headliner installed. My buddy from work is coming over today to work on his 1966 Corvair. Yes... not as cool 8) as a Pinto, but he loves :-* both of mine too. He wanted a Pinto, and had bought two, but before we could go after them, well.... things just happen (sold out from underneath us, no title, you name it). He found this 1966 Corvair (we've dubbed the "CORVIEKE"), and we both love it. He's half my age, (the same age as my youngest son), but we get along great. He's like having a third son, I'm blessed . Anyway, he's going to work on the Corvieke, and I'll work on the 1971. Hopefully, we'll both make some headway today. Larry :police:
My Buddy did come over, he got the Corvieke out, and began sanding on one of the quarter panels, and I began working on the 1971 Pinto. I sanded the interior metal on the doors, cleaned them, then primed and painted them. They look great, but for some reason the original Ford paint is really thin, got a couple of very small runs, I'm going to re-sand these areas, and repaint this week. It'll look good as new. The interior vinyl on the doors now look really bad. Since I've dyed all the other vinyl in the car, I guess I'll have to do these too. I had hoped maybe Meguiar's Vinyl Protectant would have taken care of them, and I wouldn't need to dye them. But, they look really bad next to the new paint. They're off the car, will be easy to dye. I also finished painting the new tracks for the seats, they look good as new, and have been installed on the seats. The seats are now complete, and ready for install once I'm ready to put them in. The car is taking shape nicely. My Buddy got hungry, and my daughter came home, so we went for Pizza to celebrate our day. What a blessing , had a great time...... Larry :police:
Hey Larry!
Sounds like things are coming along nicely. Isn't it great how much fun it is to work with a buddy? My best friend is a co-worker too. We've worked together, side by side, both at work and with our various automotive projects, for nearly thirty years now. In our partnership, I'm the junior member... Charlie is twenty years older than me. He'll be 72 in two weeks and still works full-time, cranks out beautifully built model cars at an astonishing rate, and always, always, always has a restoration project or two going on! Recent past projects (the past 5 yrs. or so) have included a couple of Dodge trucks (his), a Ford truck (mine), a Cadillac Coupe Deville and a Continental Mark V (both mine), and a Thunderbird (his). On the agenda next: my Pinto and a second T-Bird for him. We've both sanded, straightened, painted, tuned, adjusted, sewn, etc. on each other's projects over the years. Heck, we even finance each other's projects when money gets tight for one or the other of us! Our wives think we're crazy, but at least we're staying out of trouble! We tend to park them side by side and then work on them together - time goes by a lot faster that way, plus you always have a second set of hands available if you need them.
The weather isn't quite warm enough here yet... but soon!
Dwayne
Well it was warm when I got home after work, and I decided to sand the runs out of the interior doors I painted yesterday. Got the runs sanded out, and went ahead and taped off everything and re-painted. They look fantastic!!!! Runs all gone.... I'm getting really excited now. I took the vinyl off the interior of the doors, which was difficult. Had a hard time getting the arm rests off. Anyway, panels were removed, took them into the garage and dyed away. They look brand spanking new...they are so awesome. I then took the seat part of the back seat out and cleaned it, then decided what the hey..... may as well dye it too. The back looked new, why not the seat. Anyway, the dye job did really well, and now the back seat looks showroom. I went to my local ford parts store (Paddocks in Knightstown, Indiana), a fantastic place, they have a great car show in the fall. Got the rubber filler for the shifter notch, and put it in. WOW!!!! WOW!!! WOW!!!! This car is becoming more and more special to me, I love it!!!! Well, I'll be taking her in a couple of weeks for the new headliner, once it's in, I'll finish putting the interior back together. Will post pix when I can..... Larry :police:
Wow, Larry!
You're making progress at a breakneck pace! ;D
My local car buddy is a Corvair nut with a twist of Citroen. It's cool to hang with him and work on things! ;D
You guys are inspiring me to do a lot of little things that need to be done.
I'm a Jones, you guys are supposed to be keeping up with me! ;D
Chuck
Well I love the Corvieke (1966) Corvair too. My Buddy took it home last night to work on it at his parents. He drove it to work today, he's so proud of it, but why not, it's a great car. Anyway, it's great we have friends to share these special times together. Have a great day...Larry :police:
I am hesitant to mention that I have a 66 Corvair also, unique car. I did FORDify it by putting a 289 in the back seat. In case your friend was unaware, there is a great Corvair club "CORSA" at http://www.corvair.org/csaindex.php (http://www.corvair.org/csaindex.php). Since the Corvair is a decade older than the Pinto, the Corvair club has been around longer than FordPinto.com.
Your 71 is looking good.
Oldkayaker: Hey!!!! thanks for the information on the Corvair club. I'll forward it to my Buddy, he'll love it. Thanks again.....Larry :police:
Well.... I went to the junk yard tonight, and purchased some clips to put the inside door panels back on. When I took the panels off, I didn't lose any clips, but there were about 6 missing. Found 10 on a 1975 Pinto Stationwagon. The guy sold them to me for $1.00. Came home, put them on the door panels, and put some adhesive on each of them, to help hold them in place. I plan on putting the doors back together tomorrow. I then decided to look at the heater and defroster, as they weren't hooked up. The baffles seemed to be frozen, and wouldn't move, they were stuck. I took the unit apart, cleaned some things up, put it back together, and got them unfrozen. I think I figured out how to hook the cables up from the control switch on the dash to the baffles. I'll hook them up, once I get the dash painted. Hopefully, this weekend. I'm happy to have the 1972 to look at, so I better understand what I'm doing. While thinking about the heater and defroster, I thought it may be best for me to install new cables, rather than the original ones I have. Just because I really don't want to work on this again, once I get it back together. I thought new cables would help me in that department. I was able to find "new" cables in Cincinnati, Ohio, so I'm having them shipped to me today. Hopefully, I'll get them next week, get them installed, and have the heater up and running like new. Larry :police:
Got home from work, nice warm day... so I worked on the Pinto. I put the driver's and passenger door vinyl panels back on, and installed the window and open cranks, and the arm rest. They look fantastic. I took the Sanyo radio out, to prepare the car to accept the original Pinto radio, after I get the dash painted. I sanded and primed the glove box, it's hinge, the ashtray, and the radio bezel. Once the primer dried, I painted them black, and they look great. All I have to do now is sand the dash, prep it for paint, and paint it. Once I get that painted, I can install the radio, glove box door, ashtray. The dash will look greeeeeaaaat!!!!!! I am attaching some pictures of the doors and the before dash. Hope you enjoy. Larry :police:
lookin good! 8)
Well!!! new alternator, new battery, but for some reason the 1971 Pinto just won't hold a charge :(. So.... I took it to my brothers tonight, for them to look at. I didn't realize this, but when I jumped the 71, I turned on the lights to make sure everything worked for the road trip to Muncie, In., and found the headlamps didn't come on :surprised:, so they're going to check those too. Still have a small leak, coming in from under the dash, one small stream behind the gas pedal and one small stream by the passenger kick panel, so they thought they could fix that also ???. And last but not least, I asked them to see what it'd cost to take the push button start off, and hook the ignition back up 8). Hopefully, this all won't be too expensive. Oh well, it's my baby, got to get her running and looking good. Can't wait to get her up and running like new...... Larry :police:
For the charging, make sure the stator wire is connected and tight, might as well check continuity for that wire while there. Without that wire it won't charge correctly. While in the charging system, replace the voltage regulator, these are external on Pintos and mounted on the driver's side fender. It's a small square box with four tab connections on it which connect to rectangular plastic connector.
As for the leak, it could be a crack in the windshield gasket in the along the bottom of the windshield. If not, then it's probably your heater core.
Just a few tips for your mechanic, if they haven't already check it (although they probably have)! :)
Sounds like you are getting things going well, hope to see her as a nice driver in the years to come!
Dave1987:
Hey thanks for the tips, I'll let my mechanic know. I'm having a new headliner put in, so if it's the windshield gasket, I'll have them replace it then. They think they may have to take the windshield out to replace the headliner, but they wouldn't know for sure until they seen it. Thanks again.
Larry :police:
If you want the headliner done as original as possible, they will need to remove the windshield to do so. The headliner tucks between the windshield gasket and the roof along the top, I believe it does this around the rear window and quarter windows as well, but i can't say for sure.
You may want to check that push button start. There may be something with the wiring that is causing the drain on your battery.
Dave1987... yes, the upholstery shop told me I may need to take the windshield and back window out to replace the headliner. I told them I wanted new seals put in anyway, if that was the case. I plan on taking it this month for the headliner repair, hopefully, they'll take care of the problem. I'm just having the shop check on the leak too, only because Reed had fixed the cowl when he owned it, and knew the leak was still there. I'm just ensuring there's no further leaking from the cowl area, while they have it. If it's not the cowl, definitely the windshield seal is probably the problem. Hopefully, when they reseal it after the headliner replacement, this will take care of the problem.
Tiger....I was wondering about that push button start, that's why I want to replace it. Plus I just don't like the looks of it on the dash. I hope they can hook the original ignition up, if so, the button comes off, the hole gets repaired, and the dash gets a new paint job.
Hey guys, thank you so much for the information. I really enjoy this site, and I've been getting a lot of great tips on my Pinto repair. You all are awesome. Larry :police:
Well found out today the new alternator I had installed was bad. The switch out is being made today, so hopefully my battery will stay charged up. They haven't traced down for sure yet, on how to hook the ignition back up, so I can take the push button start off the dash. It'll be fixed though, they've assured me of that. The leak....well it's coming from the cowl, which I knew....they can't fix it, but I'll look into it. May as well get my hands dirty. Anyway, hope it'll be back on the road soon, I'm going to start driving it for fun, it's warming up around here.
Larry i had the same cowl problem, i took out the heater box and cut out the section of cowl that has the heater box hole in it. I made a new peice the same shape and made a 2 inch tall chimney and welded in the new hole to stick up in the cowl area to keep the water out. Got it all welded in and sealed and its as good as new. Your neck will get alittle tired layin down looking up but you can fix it so it wont leak.
Hey thanks.... I hope I have the skills and abilities to take care of that. We'll see...thanks for your input....guess I'll be getting my hands dirty and feet wet!!!! no pun intended....
Yeah!!! 1971 is up and running. The alternator was replaced, due to warranty. The dash cluster was swapped out, took the replacement cluster out, put the original one back in. The headlight problem was strictly due to the bulbs being burned out....imagine that!!! New dimmer switch was installed though, they thought it needed replaced. And hallelujah the push button start is off, and the ignition works again....yeah!!!!!! Drove the car home, just needs to be driven. I'll be doing a lot of that now...... I'll keep you all posted on it's progress...I'm thinking yeah spring is here, what fun I'm going to have... Larry
Very cool! I bet you've already got road trips planned! :)
Now lets see some higher resolution photos of this beauty! ;)
Congrats!!!!! It's a great feeling getting to drive your Pinto after waiting and working on it!!!! ;D
Yes.... I've been working on the pix situation. Don't know what's up...but I'm going to have a Buddy help me....maybe I'll become a little more literate on picture taking and downloading. Yeah!!!! it is great driving this little baby :fastcar:.....looking forward to a great summer. Larry :police:
Yeah!!!! I know, got great advise from smallfryefarm about the cowl; however, I've chickened out. Made an appointment with a shop in Muncie, Indiana to look the problem over. They think they can fix it, I guess we'll see. I just knew this was going to be alot to tackle, with my limited expertise, and I want to ensure it's fixed and won't leak further. I love this Pinto, and I want to protect her as best as possible. I'm still working on a name for this beauty, have a great friend that loves it as much as I. I think I'll name it for him, just don't know what to come up with yet....but I'll think of something. Friends are A gift God gives us, we should cherish the wealth they bring to us.... Larry :police:
Well I've chickened out on my cowl...I found a place locally who will look at my cowl on the 1971 Pinto and hopefully repair it. It's leaking pretty badly. I'm taking it there this week...wish me luck. Larry :police:
Well...life has gotten a little tough the last few weeks, and I haven't been able to work on the 71 Ford Pinto I got from Reed in Washington State. Things just happen I guess, but I'll be back at it in about a week. The Pinto is safely tucked away in my garage, and I haven't forgotten about it. Look forward to the therapy I'll receive, while working on a car I love. Wish all a great day.....
Larry :police:
Gee... and you were making such great progress!
Nothing too bad, I hope.
Hang in there,
Dwayne
Larry hope thing are getting better. I know the pinto will be waiting to give you some mental therapy.
Took the 1971 Pinto I got from Washington State to the repair shop on Friday. I'm having the cowl worked on, to repair where it's leaking. It's a glass install shop, but they think they can fix it. They've done work for me in the past, and I'm sure they'll take care of it. Anyway, just chickened out on the cowl, thought I'd better leave that to the experts. Don't want to put the new carpet in, until I'm sure it's not going to leak. Right now, I just need to get back to work on the Pinto, and get my mind off other things.
Larry :police:
get back at it when you can Larry its like taking medicine, it makes you feel good.
I tell you Larry i feel guilty i worked all day sat day lite to dark on mine and i would venture to say no one had as much fun as i did this week end. I just need to figure out how to make a living with out going to work i could spend all week out their.
You should get details on how the new windshield gasket goes in. Kim (I think that's who) replaced hers and had a lot of issues with it leaking, leading to a cracked windshield while pulling it out to fix it after the first install.
I will be doing my own windshield before winter comes around again and want to get it done right. I can't go without the car as of now it is my only transportation until I can get my girlfriend's Taurus running for her again (then I get my Saturn back).

Yes you are right Dave. I was the one that had alot of problems trying to install a new gasket. I think I know what went wrong and I hope apply the prognosis on my green Pinto. I think the first time it was installed, we installed it over the old pvc or pcv tape that was originally on the car. That was most likely old and I know it did fold over in a few spots (know this because it was bent over when we took the "now" broken sheild out). My husband thought that was the cause and figured it would be better to just sand it off. He then figured we would put silicone around the gasket where the winshield sits in it, then around the gasket where the body of the car sits in it. Well, that made it even worse. So we ended up having the kid (one who installs windshields) come over and run a bead of his windshield goop around the gasket in between the gasket and the body of the car. This finally stopped the leak. It was totally the wrong way to do it, but we didn't want to buy a new windshield again, and neither did we want to buy a new gasket.
So, I think if we would have sanded off the old pvc or pcv (not sure the correct name of it, but it is mentioned somewhere on this site, probably in my problem windshield post! LOL )tape, then we should have installed new pvc tape, then the windshield and gasket. Only thing is, I don't know where to buy this tape. I will need to find out before we install the new gasket in my green car! That is once I buy the gasket! LOL
Yes.....I'm told though the cowl is what the problem was...but I'm no expert. Reed had apparently tried to repair, but it still had some leakage. Anyway, I'm hoping they can seal the cowl up, and that'll take care of the problem. I'll be getting a new headliner put in soon, and I'm going to have them replace the windshield seal when they do that. I don't understand it totally, but apparently they'll have to take the windshield and back glass out, to install the new headliner. It's great being a Pinto owner.......
Larry :police:
Larry, if you look around the windshield and back glass from the inside, you will see some rubber going around them. That's the inside of the glass gasket. The headliner is between the body and that gasket, and the only way to install or remove the headliner successfully is to take the glass out. The problem is, that there is no real way of saving both the gasket and the glass. The safest way to remove the glass is to cut the seal around the glass from the outside, push the glass out from the inside, then remove the remains of the gasket once the glass is out.
Kim, it is PVC tape that was used on these cars. I haven't looked around to find out who might carry it though. I need to check with my local glass shops to see what they have to say.
Dave: Hey thanks for the information, I'm not too great at these types of details. I'm hoping the glass shop can repair the cowl problem without much difficulty, but we'll see. I just have to leave these types of things to the pros. Anyway, just found out I can get the Pinto painted in July, that'll be great. The interior should be completed by then. This will be a great little car....can't wait to take it to it's first show. Larry :police:
Well......the car window shop called and have found the two leaks I have in the Pinto. They are going to repair them, hopefully today, and the Pinto will be ready to come home. We'll just hope the holes they found in the cowl, are what's causing the problems. Anyway, if it works, new carpet will be installed this weekend......yay......!!!!!!!
Larry :police:
Well....the glass place called me this morning, and let me know they had found two holes in the cowl, and have repaired them. They kept the 1971 Pinto over the weekend, because we were going to have some rains, and they stored it outside to see if it'd leak. It did not....hallelujah!!!!! They're pretty sure it's repaired, so I'm hoping to start putting the new carpet and interior back in it this week. It'll look great!!!!! I'm going to put the garden hose on it when I get it home, just to make sure, but this place seems to do a great job, and I'm sure they've corrected the problem. I just found out I'm going to have the money to get the car repainted in July, that way it'll be ready for an all Ford show I want to attend in Septebmer. I'm stoked!!!!!!
Larry sounds exciting. Glad you got the leaks stopped. Nothing worse than wet carpet. Keep up the good work hopefully we will both be ready for a show or two later this year. I am wanting to hear mine run so bad its keeping me up at night. Once i get that far i think it will take some pressure off, hope so at least.
Well...I'm back on track with the 1971, I'm excited :amazed: about getting the new interior in it, it'll look fantastic. I did contact my shop today, and asked them to start looking for parts to rebuild the rearend, as there's a noise in it. They've driven it before, and told me it either needed to be rebuilt or replaced. They are looking for the parts now, and once they have them, it'll be going in for that repair. I think this is the last thing the car needs. Come July, the car goes to the body shop, it'll be a fantastic piece of Ford history, I just cannot wait....Larry :police:
Go Lar-ry, Go Lar-ry, Go Lar-ry!!!!!!!!
Keep it up and you'll be styling and profiling in a new Pinto!!
Okay...ran a test this weekend on the 1971. Left her out in a heavy rain storm... leaked...Leaked....Leaked. This time behind the brake pedal. It seems the other two leaks are repaired though. Apparently, the water redirected itself to another small hole. Called the glass shop today, they're taking her back to look at her again. Oh well....I'll just wait another week to put the interior in. Larry :police:
Larry mine had a few holes on that side to up around the wiper motor in the cowl. they were easier to fix on that side. not as much rust over their mainly just seem sealed them up.
Larry,
I hope you get some luck and get the leaks fixed so you can move forward with you project. A nagging problem is no fun. Luckily enough in my own case, all I need to do to fix my leaks is order and install new weatherstripping, even though it isn't really a task I'm looking forward to. :rolleye: But keep up the great work and good luck to you!
-beegle55
Smallfryefarm and beegle55: Yes....I thought the first time at the glass shop would take care of the problem. They did fix the other two, but for some reason this third leak started. Don't know why...maybe it was just time. I'm sure they'll get her taken care of. Can't wait to put the new interior in...it's going to look fantastic. I'm psyched..... I'll post pix soon.....thanks for the encouragement....Larry :police:
Well.....the glass shop said the leak in the cowl was beyond their expertise. They recommended a body shop. I ran into a guy the other day that use to work for a garage in Muncie, Indiana, which had done work for me in the past. He seemed to do okay when he worked on my car, and he told me he had started a small country garage near my home. Therefore, I took it to him, he said no prob!!!!! he'd just cut the rust out and replace it with new metal. I think he'll do just fine. Anyway, he wants to paint the car, so I told him to give me an estimate. He did some minor body work on my daughter's car a few times, and did a pretty good job. So..... we'll see, if the estimate is good, I told him I'd just leave the car with him and he could do it. He went over the car with a fine tooth comb, looked like he knew what he was doing, and told me what he could do to repair the scrapes and dings, which comes with a 38 year old car. Hopefully, in a couple of weeks, the new paint "could" be on it. Anyway, looking forward to getting the car put together, and taking it to some local shows.
Sounds like you run into some luck with this guy. i havnt had the time to work on mine latley hopefully after hay season i will be able to get her on the road at least. by the way late :happy_bday: old man. ;D
Smallfryefarm:
Hay!!!!! haha (I know it's Hey!!)....wish I could be in the Hay field with you, I use to love to bail when I was a kid. Grew up in farm country, south of Muncie, Indiana...those farmers made good use of us country boys. It was hard work, but I always had a good time. Anyway, thanks for the belated birthday.....I had a great day. My youngest son age 27, daughter age 21, and niece age 21, went to a car show with me on my birthday...we had a blast!!!! I couldn't take either of my Pintos, they were both in the shop, but there were over 200 cars there. It was fantastic. The show took place about 5 miles north of Tipton, Indiana, at a working 1950s town. Apparently this guy has built this town, in his back yard, and it includes a service station, movie theatre, barber shop, diner, and several other attractions. It was a great place for a car show, and I had a blast. It was a very special birthday, because my kids wanted to be there with me. If you're interested go to asummerplace.org it'll tell you all about it. Have a great day... Larry
Well tonight I went by the garage that's repairing my cowl. He's going to cut the rust out, and repair....says no problem, he'll get r done. He wanted to speak to me about painting it, so I listened. He plans on painting under the hood, trunk, door jambs, and engine compartment, along with removing the vinyl top and painting the exterior. Gave me a price I couldn't believe....so guess what? He's starting on it tomorrow. I hope he does okay, not really seen a total car he's painted, only smaller repairs and repaints. He did good then, so I'm sure I'll be alright....I guess we'll see. The deal was just too good to pass up. I'll be taking some pix during the repair and repaint process, and will post those as they're available. Then I'll post a pix of the final paint job...I'm really looking forward to it. Larry :police:
Hey Larry,
The speed with which you've redone Reed's old Pinto amazes me! Can't believe you're to the point of painting already!
Last weekend was the first really decent weekend we've had weather-wise and I should have worked on my Pinto. Instead, I spent Saturday cleaning and detailing one of my '79 Lincolns, and all day Sunday showing it off at a local car show. Once again, nothing accomplished on the Pinto :rolleye:. I'll get to it eventually, although I have to work this weekend. Hope your paint job turns out great - can't wait to see the pictures!
Dwayne
WOW!!!! The body shop called me this evening, and wanted me to come check out the 71 Pinto. I could not believe it, the car is looking incredible. The guy has removed all the chrome, the vinyl top, and bumpers. He's repaired probably 75% of the dents and dings, and plans on priming it tomorrow. If the paint looks as good as the body work, I'll be thrilled. I must say, it may even look better now, than it did prior to him starting to work on it. I just could not believe how great it looks. Anyway, he plans on painting it Saturday, and clear coating it Monday. He wants to have it back to me early next week. I'll post some pix later, can't wait for you Pinto fans to see it. Larry :police:
Wow!! I'm looking forward to seeing her all done. It sounds like you found a good body man. Here's hoping the result is what you want.
Well...went to the garage yesterday, to check out the 71....totally primed. The body looks great and straight, and the primer gives it a great uniform look. If the paint goes on as well as the primer, it'll look fantastic :amazed:. The guy is taking every piece of chrome from the car and polishing it. I don't understand that for sure, but he's purchased some sort of polishing wheel, and must use some sort of compound with it. He told me the chrome would look new.....he's just throwing this in, as he wants the Pinto to look great when I get it back. I'm hoping the car looks as great when he completes it, as I think it's going to. Pictures will be forthcoming.......Larry :police:
Hey larry sounds exciting, take your camera when you pick her up. Probably never look better than she will fresh out of paint.
Larry,
The shop that painted my '79 Lincoln Continental Collector's Series did the same thing - it was amazing how much better the chrome looked once it was all polished. Sounds like the Pinto is coming along nicely! Can't wait to see the results!
Dwayne
The 71 is under primer now...looks great. Was suppose to be painted tonight, and clear coated in the morning. We'll see, can't wait to see it. Larry :police:
Wow, that looks really good.
Does she still have her vinyl-top?
doesnt look like the top is still there. Man that looks nice, Need larger pics tho lar
r4pinto, blupinto, 75bobcatv6: Hey thanks for the comments. Yes...I know the pix are small, but that's the only way I can get them to post for now. I'm working with my son who may be able to help me post larger pictures, I hope to start a gallery soon on both the 1971 I got from Reed in Washington State, and the 1972 original Runabout I already had. Anyway, no the vinyl top had to be removed. I would have kept it, but there were some rust areas under it, which obviously had to be repaired, so the body guy removed it, repaired the rust, and the car is taking shape. I know the vinyl top Pintos are rare, but this car is never going to be original, but it's going to be beautiful. I will look at the car next summer, and decide if maybe I want to put the top back on; however, for now, I think I really just want to leave it painted. If I leave it painted, it will look exactly like the car I had in High School, and that's actually why I bought it. Anyway, it's suppose to be painted and clearcoated by this evening, I'm going to look at it this afternoon. I'll post some more pix when I can, and once I get more computer literate, I'll post some larger pix. Thanks for your interest....Larry :police:
Thanks to 75bobcatv6 I found photo bucket. I think now the pix will post larger, if you just double click on them. I have one in the primer, and a rear shot in the new paint, without the clear coat. Hope you enjoy....Larry :police:
Larry, you need to upload them to photo bucket at their size straight off the camera. or the Camera's memory card. then link them here with photo bucket. and anytime i can help i will =)
Okay...went to see the 1971 yesterday, to see how the painting is going. The guy has the clearcoat on now, and it looks amazing. The only problem is, a little dust settled on the hood and roof, and he's not happy about it. He's going to wet sand that part of the car today, and redo the clear coat. If he keeps those small particles of dust off this time, the car's paint job will be near perfect. I'm excited about seeing the car with the chrome all back on it. He pulled it out of the garage and into the sunlight, and it really glistened. It's going to be a great little car when I get it finished. Larry :police:
She's lookin SWEET larry.
cant wait to see what it looks like done..!!!
Well the guy called and wanted me to come look at the paint on the 1971. He's doing a little wet sanding, got a ocuple of drips, then will buff the entire car out. It looks really nice. There's an issue with a fly that left a leg in the clear coat, he's going to try to get it out, if not, I guess I have a souvenir. He's polished all the chrome, and will put it on after he buffs the car. He thinks he'll have it all done by Friday.....guess we'll see. Will post pix once I get it back home. Thanks....Larry :police:
Got the 71 Pinto home last week after the paint job....it looks fantastic. I'm getting ready to move, so I'm not gonna have a lot of time to work on it, at least for the next month. I hope to get it out this weekend, and finish painting the dash, and a couple of more pieces in the car. I'll probably wait and install the interior, once I get the new headliner in. I'm taking her to the upholstery shop in the next couple of weeks to get the headliner put in. I'm hoping by the end of July, I'm moved, and the Pinto is done. Guess we'll see. I'll post pix soon of the paint job, it looks great.......Larry :police:
Larry,
Sounds great - can't wait to see it! Good luck with the move. At the moment, I can't think of anything I hate worse than moving!!! Hope it goes smoothly.
Dwayne
Looking forward to seeing the pics of your gem. :fastcar: :tgif:
I've had a time posting a pix of the new paint job on the 1971 Pinto I got from Reed out of Washington State. Anyway, it looks great. Will go to the shop next week for a rearend rebuild, then straight in for a new headliner. It's looking great. Will post additional and better pix soon. Hope you enjoy.
Larry :police:
:hypno: WOW!!! :hypno:
matt does this give you a lot of insperation?
You got that right Phil. Then again, riding in your Bobcat a few weeks ago did that too. ;D
Okay...the 1971 Pinto I got from Reed in Washington State is almost looking too good to be true. My cousin, who owns a fully restored 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback, just cannot believe it. He told me when I take it to car shows, it could beat his...hahaha ...I doubt it. Anyway, spent all morning repainting all the metal inside the car, yes that's right every piece of metal. It looks incredible. Will take it for the rearend rebuild next Friday, and after that straight for the new headliner. This car is going to be a head turner. It's been fully tuned up, and I just had it retimed. It runs incredible. I love it!!!!!!! Larry :police:
Your cousin is right... Here is my reasoning. How many nice 1965 Mustangs are out there? Now, how many nice 1971 Pintos are out there? I think you can see my reasoning ;D
R4pinto....well I never looked at it that way before. You're right!!!!!! It's getting more and more difficult to find a nice Pinto, especially a 1971 trunk model. I don't know why I love them so much, but they are great cars. Hey!!!! I don't think you're that far away, from what I'm seeing, if you get you a good car show going sometime early to mid August, let me know my sons and I will come on over. My older boy has a sweet 1968 Mustang, and my younger son an even sweeter 1966 Mustang. We love our old Fords. Hey!!!! thanks for the comment, I've added you to my Buddy list. Have a great day....Larry :police:
You do the same Larry, thanks for the add! Seeing your car gives me hope that mine will come out as nice as yours someday. A shiney Pinto is good motivation to get a beat up, rusty, non running Pinto back into shape.
R4pinto...well I was lucky...Reed blessed me with a wonderful Pinto...I've grown to love it sooooo much, I doubt I'd even consider selling it. Thanks for the comment, and when you can....you will get your Pinto up and running good. Thanks....Larry
Larry wow it is beautifull!!!! I am so jealous, but so glad for you, you deserve it.
Larry your part's were shipped today at 10:30 AM Oklahoma time from OK thanks Fred :)
Really looks good Larry, You should be proud! ;D Yea, you got a nice car from Reed but you have put a lot of time, effort and hard work into it yourself. And Matt's right, most any car show you go to there will be several early Mustangs, but Pinto's? Not so much!! BTW, I'm kinda partial to the '71 trunk model myself! :D
Well...Friday July 3, 2009, I took the 1971 Pinto to the shop to have the rear end rebuilt. They called me today, and have found the gears and such needed for the rebuild, they are ordered, and being shipped as we speak. Probably in the next week or so the rear end will be as good as new...then off to the upholstery shop for the new headliner. The car will be put back together hopefully within the next month, and will almost looka as good as new. It's a beautiful car....I love this Pinto....Larry :police:
I should hope it looks good as new. With all you've done, it practically is new! :o
Keep up the good work Larry!
Chuck :afro:
Okay.... Shop called me today, and the rearend on the 1971 Pinto has been rebuilt. Hallelujah :D. This means all I have left, that I know about, is getting the new headliner put in. I have purchased the new one, have the shop who's going to install it, and I'll be taking her there next week. Once I get her back, then the new interior I've purchased will be installed. This baby will look and run brand spanking new. ;D I can't wait to take her to her first show....which will probably be at the all Ford car show in Middletown Indiana in September. Well...back to the grind.... Larry :police:
Sounds fantastic, Larry! Enjoy!
Dwayne
Okay, went Friday and picked up the 1971 Pinto from the shop...guess what???? There's no rearend noise now. Yay!!!!!!! I took her home, didn't get much chance to work on it this week end, but was able to hook the heat and defrost back up and the outside air vents. I then went ahead and worked on putting the dash back together, including the addition of the new dash cap and....... the new radio I got from Fred Morgan. The dash looks almost new . I went ahead and dyed the dash cluster again, as it was a little faded, and I put the new Pinto woodgrain emblem on the dash, I recently got off EBAY. The car is coming around right nicely. I have an appointment on July 31, 2009 to take it in for the new headliner....then when I get her back, I just have to install the carpet and seats. It's going to be ready for show pretty soon....I cannot wait......keep ya posted....Larry :police:
Larry, I know you said you weren't planning on replacing the vinyl-top... whatever became of it?
Larry!
You have made astounding progress on Reed's old Pinto... and in such a short period of time :surprised:. I sure hope I get to see this jewel in person someday!
Dwayne
blupinto.....Well....the vinyl top was probably shredded when removed to repair the rust under it. When I had my 1971 Pinto trunk model in High School, I actually added a maroon vinyl top to it, and it looked great on it. So....if I decide to replace the top, I'll probably put maroon back on; however, at this point, I just love the look of the slick top, and just don't think I want a vinyl top back on. This 71 from Reed, just will never be original, but it will be great!!!!! So.....guess we'll just have to wait and see....maybe I should take a poll and see what others think. What's your vote????? I know they're rare with the vinyl tops...so maybe?????? Thanks....Larry :police:
dga57....Yes....you know, my wife and I love to take little trips every once in a while...who knows...maybe we could meet half way between our homes, meet each other and see our Pintos....or my wife and I may just venture to your neck of the woods, and bring the 71....anyway, I hope to post some good pix soon, that of course is when the beauty is fully complete.....Hey have a great day...appreciate your comments....Larry :police:
Larry they say opinions are like butt holes eveybodys got one. But since you ask i will give you mine.
I like the slick look with out the vinyl. Good to see you progressing so fast. keeper up. ;D
Yes... everybody's got one, and most stink! lol.
I was asking because if the top wasn't shredded and you didn't want it I was going to ask what you'd sell it for. I think mine would look great in a vinyl-top.
Since you kinda asked... yes I prefer vinyl-tops because that was so '70s. Plus, it gave the Pinto a touch of class in my opinion. Larry, you've done wonders on what was Reed's '71 but what made it unique to me was the vinyl-top. I haven't seen a Pinto w/ a VT (in person) for many years. I never meant to sound mean about it... I'm just fond of them and sad that the world has lost another VT. :'(
blupinto:
Sorry...I didn't think you sounded mean about it...it was a good question, I hope you didn't take my thread wrong. I too liked the vinyl top in the 70's, you're right it was so 70's, that's why I had one added to my 71 trunk model during my High School years. And I can tell you, if it had been salvageable, I'd have given the top to you, but I really don't think it's too expensive to have one added to your car. Mine was only like $75.00 in the 70's, it may only be a couple of hundred at your local upholstery shop. I only asked for the poll, because if enough really like the idea of having it reinstalled, I'll probably do it. I'm a Pinto lover, and there's other Pinto lovers on this site, their opinion means a lot, and I will listen. Yes....Reed gave me a great car, and I love it. I have done a lot in a short period of time, but I've just hit some great resources here. It'll be done in a couple of weeks, and will be the shining beauty it once was. All the High School kids in my area love my two Pintos....and when I was in High School it was nothing more than an economy car, made to be driven, worn out, and thrown away...my how things change. Great question though blupinto...sorry if I sounded like I took your comment the wrong way, because I truly didn't. Have a great day!!!!! Larry :police:
It's ok... I was afraid you'd think I was this obsessive person who kept on you about the vinyl-top. I wouldn't think they'd sell that type (you know- kinda roughish) VT material anymore. Now VTs are buttery soft with much padding underneath.
Anyway, she's your baby now, so you do what you feel. You'll be the one seeing her and driving her so whatever your heart tells you this is what you should follow. ;D
Did you put the VT on your earlier (HS era) Pinto? If you did, how did you do it? I think I will eventually get Wildfire a VT in black (better matching) or chocolate like my Grandmother's '74 LTD. :)
blupinto:
No...I didn't do the vinyl top, I'm just not that handy. I can do minor cosmetic things, but a vinyl top I'm just not talented enough for that. I found a local car upholstery shop when I did mine in the 70's, they did a great job, and it didn't take them long to do it. The same shop is still in business here locally. If you get on the net, I'm sure there's suppliers there that can give you the same vinyl material as used in the 70's. I found a place in Michigan that carried interior vinyl of the 70's, that's how I got the material to re-do the seats in my 71. Just check with your local upholstery shop, they can probably get you the 70's vinyl, and install it for probably not a whole lot of change. I must admit, you've got me thinking, next spring...who knows....maybe I'll go ahead and have the top re-installed. Thanks for your comments...have a great day. Larry :police:
Okay...wasn't able to get the 1971 Pinto to the upholstery shop this past week for the new headliner :'(, so I'm taking her there this Friday. Once the headliner is in, the new interior may be installed, and the car will be basically finished :). The only thing I'm going to look at is possibly a new exhaust, the current one I have on rattles a bit, I'd like a little more quiet ride. The shop I use for my work said they can install a new system for not a lot of jack :surprised:.... we'll see. After the new interior is in, new pix will be posted. Larry :police:
Looking forward to the pics!!!! :tgif: ;D

Looking forward to the pics!!!! :tgif: ;D
Me too!!!
Dwayne
Well, got the 1971 Pinto to the upholstery shop on Friday. They looked her over, and now know the windshield has to come out to install the new headliner. Unfortunately, most glass companies won't guarantee the removal and replacement of the original windshield, due to the fact it could break when they remove or install. So let's all pray they can get her out and back in without any problems. I guess I really don't have a choice, it's either remove it, or leave the torn headliner in. Well since the windshield leaks also, I guess it's do or die. So let's do it!!!!!! Can't wait to get her home and install the new interior. The car should be in order for the all Ford Car Show I want to take her to in September. Larry :police:
Larry, you should order a new rubber for the W/S and let them cut the old one to get the W/S out. Less chance of breakage and if it's leaking you prob need a new one anyway.
71pintoracer: Hey thanks for the information, I'll call them and let them know. I'm dumb when it comes to the windshield things, didn't know what to tell them, just knew I really didn't have much of a choice, since I wanted the headliner replaced, and the leak fixed around the windshield. Will keep you all posted on the progress. Thanks again...Larry :police:
Called the trim shop today, they've had the 1971 Pinto two weeks to install the headliner, I was courious about their progress. Art told me the headliner was in, and it looked fantastic. The glass shop, who had to remove the glass, is waiting for a new windshield seal so they can reinstall it. Apparently, which I didn't know, they had to also remove the side glass from the rear passenger compartment to properly install the headliner. Who would have thought? I wonder why Ford would design a car, where all the glass had to be removed if the headliner ever needed replaced. Oh well...at the time I guess they thought the Pinto would be a throw away car, never anticipating they'd be loved 40 years later by folks like us. Anyway, should get the car back next week....then I can install the new carpet and seats. Then the car is DONE!!!!! This car is looking amazing :amazed:. Larry :police:
Larry,
Glad to hear it's still progressing nicely. I'll bet she's a real looker!
Dwayne
Well...WHEW!!!!! I picked up the 1971 Pinto from the upholstery shop yesterday, after getting the new headliner installed. It looks fantastic, they did a really nice job....but...the expense was astronomical. You all had told me the glass would have to come out of the car, which I knew. Most of you, including 71pintoracer said it'd probably take a new windshield seal, once the windshield was replaced, and it did. Well here goes.....
Installation of headliner $200.00
New windshield seal $169.00
Install all glass $250.00
How it looks Priceless
I really hated it cost so much for the headliner, but the windshield, back glass, and rear passenger side glasses all had to come out, then be reinstalled. Probably not one of Ford's better ideas, but hey!!! If I wanted the headliner replaced, I guess I had to pay the piper. Anyway, it looks great, now all that's left is installing the carpet, interior trim, and seats. Hopefully, in the next few weeks I'll get "r" done!!!! Pictures will be coming after interior is completed. Larry :police:
Cant wait to see it larry. Believe me i know waht you mean every time i turn around i loose 200 dollars. Bought 2 new front tires yesterday 2 electric fans this morning. Two front shocks on the way home. Someone stop me i need help, ;D
Any way cant wait to see her larry. Glad to hear you are getting along so fast.
smallfryefarm: It's nice to know someone can empathize with me. lol Who would have thought 40 years ago, a car that sold for $1,999.00 would cost so much to restore later. Oh well, I love the Pinto, it'll be a great momento of my youth. Thanks for the feedback....Larry :police:
Larry, that lil' red car is practically brand new again! Not everyone can have a new old car! Or a 38 year young Pinto... Will you take her to Carlisle in 2011? I too would love to see her...Congratulations! ;D
blupinto:
Yes...I'm really pleased with the old Pinto, it's beginning to look brand new. I do plan on going to Carlisle in 2011. If I do, I'd like to hook up with all my Pinto friends I've met thru Fordpinto.com. Hope to see you there. Larry :police:
need more and new pix larry
75bobcatv6: Yes...I too want to post some new pix. I will be working on the interior today and tomorrow, hope to get her all installed. Once I do, I'll take some new pix, and post them, hopefully, in the next few days. Thanks.
Larry :police:
FANTASTIC!!! Can't wait to see it!
Dwayne
Well....got the new interior installed in the 71 today. It looks amazing :amazed:. Total cost was right at $1,500.00, but it was worth it. I'm trying to get some pictures to post, but it's showing my attachment exceeds the maximun size allowed. So I'll try again tomorrow. Can't wait to show it off. Larry :police:
Well...let's see if it'll post this time.....and it did, to make it larger just double click on the picture. Larry :police:
Wow!! Very nice!!
Just make sure you where long pants in the summer!!! Those black seats are going to be hot! Ask me I know! LOL The Green Machine has black interior and I had to parked outside the carport. Ran and jumped in it with my shorts on, to move it back under the carport, and you wouldn't believe how fast I came back out of that car!!!! OUCH!!!!!! LOL
Look's good though and I look forward to more pics!!! ;D I don't know, something about Pinto pics, I just like alot of them!! LOL
Here's a couple of more pictures of this beautiful Pinto, again just double click on the picture, it'll make it larger.....Larry :police:
Let's try the same thing with this picture of the outside of the 1971 Pinto...just double click, should make it larger for better viewing. Larry :police:
BTW....these are both my little beauties. My grandaughter loves my Pinto too!!!!
WOW!!!! That looks Amazing. We need more pics of the rest of the car now larry. you should send pics in for the 2010 Calendar
:amazed: Larry the car is amazing. Very nice job!!! love the pics and the grand daughter is adorable. I have to little grand daughters and dont know how i made it this long with out them. Really impressive job on the pinto keep the pics coming. And remember Larry you owe me dinner and im buying. :)
Larry,
The car looks fanstastic! Maybe I should send you mine to work on... I sure can't seem to find the time to do it  Seriously, yours has become everything I hope for mine to eventually be, and then some! Great job!
Dwayne
Dave and Dwayne: Yes...the Pinto looks really nice...and I'm proud of her. She's been a real joy to work on, and I love the silly thing. My wife and I took her out last night for ice cream, kinda remembering our dates we had in High School, in my original 71 Pinto. I was impressed, but I really don't think the wife truly appreciated the stroll down memory lane. We got a lot of lookers last night, I think she's going to be a real head turner. Good hearing from you all, and yes...I do plan on going to Carlisle in 2011. See ya soon.....Larry :police:
Pinto lovers: I have pretty much finished my 1971 Ford Pinto trunk model. During my restoration I acquired a few extra pieces of trim and such, and would be glad to give them to anyone who would need them, for shipping costs only. The things I can think of off hand I have are: one dash vent for outside air, some hub caps, gas cap, I think a right front turn signal lens, inside dome light assembly without the lens, a dash cluster with the faux chrome trim, two extra seats from a 1978 Ford Pinto, in usuable shape, but could use some work, and a dashboard minus it's accessories (glove box lid, ashtray, etc.). Again, they're free for the taking, just let me know if you're interested and I'll ship to you.....thanks....Larry :police:
Larry,
Is that gas cap one of the original painted ones?
Dwayne
Dwayne:
Yes it is, but I got it out of a junk yard and it's kinda banged up. Looks like someone has left it on the roof of the car one time, and it fell off and got some road rash. I'm sure it's repairable, but just know it's not perfect. I've had another interested person ask about it..not sure if they'll want it since they now know it's not perfect. I'll let you know. Larry :police:
Larry,
Perfection is NOT my middle name  Would be glad to have it in any condition if the other party decides against it. Let me know!
Dwayne
Got up early today to clean the 1971 Pinto I just finished for it's first car show tomorrow. My goal was to have the car ready for the "ALL FORD CAR SHOW" at the McCrocklin Ford Dealership in Middletown, Indiana. It's ready :fastcar:and the show is tomorrow. I'm also taking the 1972 Pinto I have, both look fantastic and are spit shined and ready to go. I'll be posting some pictures of the show. It was great last year, and I'm sure it will be better this year. Oh yeah!!!!! I got best Pinto last year, but I was the only one there. I have two this year, so if no one else brings a Pinto, I'm sure to win again this year.....

Seems to me you should be able to bring home first AND second prize!!! Good luck!
Dwayne
Well...they didn't have a Pinto class this year, it was something which kind of incorporated all Fords...I didn't win with either Pinto. Oh well...the cars looked great, and I got a lot of good response and comments, especially about the 1971. I had a great day, spent time with good friends and family...life is good. Larry :police:
Well, Hey, Larry... in my book, that's even better than a trophy! Glad you had a good time!
Dwayne
Dwayne:
Yes...I had a great day, my wife and daughter were there, a very good friend and his wife went with me, and my cousin showed up with his 1965 Mustang Fastback. While I was there, I met a family that was showing a 1959 Ford Galaxie Convertible, who I believe is a distant relative of mine. We have each other's information, and will check out just how closely we're related. It was a beautiful day spent with great people. I'm truly blessed. Larry :police:

We have each other's information, and will check out just how closely we're related. It was a beautiful day spent with great people. I'm truly blessed. Larry :police:
And THAT'S what it's TRULY all about!
Dwayne
Sounds like you had fun Larry, awsome.
Well....I have a car show scheduled tomorrow morning in Vevay, Indiana....I really want to go to it. My parents reside there, so we plan on leaving tonight and spending the night with them. It's about a 2 1/2 hour drive. Some really good friends are going with us...I simply cannot wait. The only problem is, I've now got an abscessed tooth, and it's killing me. I just hope it doesn't get so bad I have to cancel. Got a phone call into my dentist, but I may not be able to get in until Monday.....we'll just have to wait and see......Larry :police:
Man sounds like my kinda luck.
sorry about the tooth larry hopefully the dentist will get you in today and get you some relief.
Sounds like it will be a fun journey and car show!! Just go get some Orajel, and some Advil!!!!
Take lots of pics!!! ;D
Was able to go to the car show in Vevay, Indiana today. The tooth is feeling better, but still not perfect. I'm going to the dentist on Monday. There were 243 cars registered for today's show, and guess what????? only one Pinto, mine!!!!! lol  I didn't win any awards, but everyone loved the silly car. I love hearing others tell their Pinto stories while looking at mine. We left her at Mom and Dad's, for winter storage...they have a huge very clean pole barn, makes it nice for me. I have a couple of more car shows this fall near my home, but I still have my 1971, so I'll take it. You all have a great weekend. Larry :police:
Larry,
Glad you were able to make it to the car show. Hope that tooth doesn't completely ruin your weekend. Take care!
Dwayne
I am not proud to crown myself Queen of Abscessed Teeth but dentist visits don't lie. Larry, I hope you'll feel OK til Monday. The last infected tooth I had naturally manifested itself on a Friday afternoon and it got so bad my right eye was swollen shut. I had to go to Kaiser to get antibiotics (five count 'em FIVE pills! The 'Cillin family (penicillin, amoxicillin, ampicillin, etc.) taste terrible, but it beats the agony- and it is agony- of a relentlessly throbbing tooth. No pain med (legal) or Orajel can touch a bad abscessed tooth. Believe me I've tried. Get better Larry! We're, ah, "pulling" for you! (not your tooth! Bet you thought I was referring to that!) Probably Root Canal City (a fun place- NOT!)
Well, I'm very familiar with root canals and crowns. Last root canal I had about 4 years ago took 4 hours in the orthodontist chair. Then to top it off, the crazy tooth had 5 roots instead of the normal 3 or 4. Leave it to me to always have the stupid extra root.....you all have a great day...amd thanks for the thoughts and concerns....Larry :police:
On September 19, 2009 I showed my all original 1972 Ford Pinto Runabout at the Vevay, Indiana By the River Car Show. Here's a couple of pix of this beautiful piece of Ford history.
Gosh, I DO love an orange Pinto!!!
Dwayne
:amazed: WOW larry she is sweet. And i love the color!!!!
Dwayne and David: Hey thanks for the comments...yes this is a great color for the Ford Pinto :amazed:. It's funny, the 1971 is a bright red, but in photographs the two look the same. If you see them in person, it's a definate color change. I just went out and cut carpet out for the trunk and have it lined now. I also dyed the vinyl side moldings on the car. You couldn't see in the pix, but the black side moldings were a little towards the gray side. The new vinyl dye has restored the beautiful black accent to the car. I just have a little tweeking, and this car is finished. Thanks again...Larry :police:
The shifter was a little tight when trying to shift the 1971 Pinto; therefore, I took the indicator cover off and sprayed in a little WD-40....It shifts smooooooth...now....hahaha Larry :police:
I went to the local reservoir today, and took some nice pictures of the 1971 Ford Pinto trunk model. I also took a picture of the new carpeted trunk, and a nifty little leather pouch I got last week at our local All Ford Car Show. Hope you enjoy the pictures....Larry :police:
VERY nice, Larry! I think Reed would be proud of what you've done with his car! It's a beauty!
Dwayne
Would be nice to get reed on here to see what was done to the car. Im sure he would love to see what it looks like now
Hey guys!!!! Thanks for the comments, yes the car does look spectacular, and I'm really pleased with the way it turned out. I do keep in contact with Reed, and I think he still reads this thread. However, I have sent him photos of the car, so he knows what it looks like now. I think he's just happy someone took the car that would love it, and do with it what he had wanted to do. I appreciate the fact Reed worked with me on the purchase of this car, I've come to love it, and it'll always be part of my life. When I'm gone, my youngest boy will take the car and love it like I do. It was fun last night going out and taking these pix, I hope I have years more to enjoy it. Larry :police:
Larry great job on those pics. Looks like a post card.
Thanks.....they did turn out nice....Larry :police:
back to your car show car... it's really neat that you have the old hinged hatch. You don't see many of those around...they're both beauties.
blupinto.....Yes...I'm really lucky to have two of these beautiful little cars. My Wife told me the other day, I need to get another one, since the 71 is finished. I think I'll wait a year or so. If I get another one, I'd like to either find the Pinto Sprint...or do a Pinto Sprint clone. We'll see...thanks for the comment....Larry :police:
I have heard of a Pinto rally but what is a Pinto sprint???
hellfirejim: In 1972 to commemorate the 1972 Olympics, Ford came out with a Mustang, Maverick, and Pinto Sprint model. The Mustang came in a Fastback and a Coupe. The Pinto was only made in the Runabout version. All these Sprint models were White, with a blue racing stripe and red pin striping. The interiors were white, and complimented with blue seat insets with red piping, and I think the dashes were blue. Each car proudly displayed a shield accent, I think on the rear fenders, which looked like an American Flag. They were beautiful cars, and you see very few around today. I found some pictures on the internet, hope you enjoy. Thanks...Larry :police:
I decided to change my profile picture, and make it one of my 1971 Ford Pinto, I just finished restoring :fastcar:. Hope you all like the change....Larry :police: Oh yeah!!! my Grandaughter wanted to add some of the smiley faces to this email....so here goes..... :accident: :hypno: okay, now she's happy, she added to my post.

Aren't grandkids wonderful?
Dwayne
Dwayne: Grandkids are the best gift I think God gives us. I have another little Grandaughter due in a month...I simply cannot wait. Have a great day!!!! Larry :police:
THAT IS A BIG AMEN on the best gift god gave me. I have a grandaughter that will be 1 yr next month and one 6 months, they are so precios i cant hardly make it past a day with out seeing them. So precious. And are my best buddies. Dont want to change your thread but couldnt resist beating my chest a bit.
Dave: I could talk about yours and my grandchildren all day, never hesitate to post on my thread about them. Congrats....I'm sure they're a blessing....have a great day!!!!! Larry :police:

I have one grandson who will be three in January. Another is on the way but do not know the gender yet!
Dwayne
Dwayne: Our new Grandaughter is due in about 30 days....I love her already, but there's still a part of me that wishes I didn't know the gender yet. That was part of the fun of having a baby, is the surprise when they were born. Grandkids are truly a gift, and they're lucky to have not only loving parents, but Grandparents which adore them also. Have a great day!!!!! Larry :police:
Went to James Dean days in Fairmont Indiana today. For those too young, or those who may not remember, James Dean was a Hollywood actor in the mid 50's, and he was from Fairmont, Indiana. On September 30, 1955 he was killed in a tragic car accident, I think in California, while driving a 1955 Porche Spyder. They had venders, carnival rides, and best of all classic cars. They had every type of car represented there, except I did not see one Pinto. I had chosen not to take one of my Pintos today, my wife and I just wanted to walk around and enjoy other peoples cars. Well we did...we seen some beautiful classics. Did a little antiquing while we were there, and finished the day off with supper at Cracker Barrell... You all have a great weekend....Larry :police:
Sounds like my kind of day. It poured down rain all day here in Virginia - not a fit day to get out and do anything!
Dwayne
Dwayne: We were fortunate, was great weather for James Dean. Have another car show next Saturday, in Daleville, Indiana. Went to it last year, and it was a really nice one. Maybe only a 100 cars, but just a nice little country town event. Have a great Sunday.....Larry :police:
Well....I guess my wife is tired of me being in the house...she wants me to get another probject going. I'm torn between two ideas. #1. Find a nice 1972 Runabout and clone it as the Sprint version of that year. If I can find a white one with good paint, I'd just have to add the stripes and decals. I can recover the seats in the original fabric....I'm sure I can find, then paint and dye the rest of the interior as needed. Or #2. I'm thinking of getting a decent Pinto Wagon and cutting the roof off from the driver's compartment back, enclosing the cab, and making a Pinto truck. What do you all think???? I'm leaning towards cloning the 72 Runabout into a Sprint. Thanks....Larry :police:
Maybe a nice wagon with 302 nice blower sticking out of the hood ladder bars and a giant set of meats under the back. Maybe stick a couple wheelie bars out the back for conversation. and put one of those bumper stickers on the back that says the Heart beat stops here. ;D ;D
Dave: Well....okay....let me think on that.... remember...I'm no mechanic....but how cool 8) would that be????
Larry
Larry the mechanic part is the easy part. And really the most satisfying, Your looking for a project anyway what better time to dig into something and make it happen your self. I promise you once you get in thier it will all become very clear and not nearly as hard as you thought and if you have questions myself and a lot of others are here to help.
Im tellin you larry you will LOVE IT.
Dave: Have you ever seen me with a wrench?????? lol  Yes...I know I could do it, and I'll probably dive right in and try something.... It'll be spring before I do anything, but I'm really thinking about what I want to tackle, and what'd be the most fun later.....thanks for the input...yes, I know I can do it...Larry :police:
Larry, you could always come out west and tackle Wildfire... for practice you know... ::) lol.

Larry, you could always come out west and tackle Wildfire... for practice you know... ::) lol.
Or... if you prefer the east coast, you are more than welcome to invest some time in mine! I sure can't seem to find any time to work on it
Dwayne ;D
Blupinto: Hey!!!!! Wildfires????? I'm a little afraid of fires myself, I get nervous when I burn trash...lol  I've been in Law Enforcement over 30 years, and there's always been a little competition with Firefighters as to whom are the most important. I can tell you from experience, when my house caught fire 4 years ago, Firefighters were there within 9 minutes of making our 911 call. They saved the house in just a few minutes, at that time I thought they were the most important, and I appreciated their help so much. We were able to move back into our home in just 24 hours. So I'll leave the firefighting to those that know what they're doing, I appreciate our emergency workers.... But why don't I come to California and visit your beautiful beaches????? I appreciate you all responding to my threads, I really enjoy my friends at fordpinto.com...thanks for the input....Larry :police:
Dwayne: Hey I always appreciate hearing from you in my thread. I could only wish we lived closer together, it'd be nice to have a friend who loved Pintos as much as I. If we were closer, you know I'd love to come over and work on your car with you, or without you, wouldn't matter, it's a nice release for me to work with my cars, and I could enjoy working on yours just as much. You're right, what you've said in prior threads, I know we'd be great friends if we resided closer to each other. My wish someday is to be able to attend a car show with one of my Pintos, in which you and your wife can be there also. We'd have a great day at the show, then grab a nice supper afterwards. Hey!!!! you have a great day, thanks....Larry :police:
Not A wildfire... THE Wildfire... that lil' copper-colored Pinto in my posts silly goose! I too am afraid of fires. Almost all of my life I've had fire dreams that terrified me. Yeah, I do cry when I see a vehicle or home engulfed in flames. I do NOT want to be cremated when I pass from this life. So yes, I understand the fear of fires. I wouldn't even burn trash, even if it was legal to do so here. The pony she (I) named Wildfire could do with an upholstery shop visit, a new paintjob, LOTS of engine work (sob) :'( , new shocks and other underside goodies... ;D and I'm only about eight miles from the beach!
Larry maybe spend the winter looking for a real Sprint. I think Pintony that used to be on this site found one, don't know if he's willing to part with it but... If you can't find a real one I'm sure in your quest you will run across a few good candidates for a clone at that point you could decide weather to make a stock clone or make a clone with a blown 302 in it, tube chassied etc. etc. etc. I'd like to see you do a restored original if you can find one or a stock clone.
That'd be great to find a real sprint...but I'm just not sure there are any around. You'e right, I'll look this winter, I don't want to start another project until spring anyway. If you hear of any, just let me know...thanks.
Larry

Hmmm... wonder what it would cost to ship my Pinto out to you?
Seriously, I'm counting on getting together in Carlisle in 2011 if we don't meet up somewhere beforehand. We are tentatively planning a cross-country road trip in 2010 and a dinner stopover in Indiana certainly shouldn't be out of the question! Food for thought, anyway!
A true Sprint would be quite a find but creating a clone might actually make for the more interesting project. Judging by your apparent taste in cars, whatever you do will probably be bone stock... right? That's the way I would do it too. The modified Pintos on this site are incredible, and the V-8's and turbos are absolutely awesome, but I like my slow little 75 hp four cylinder because it reminds me of what the Pintos were like when they were new!
Dwayne
Blupinto: My bad..... I guess I was just sleeping when I read your post. Anyway, BEACH Huh????? I love the ocean and beaches. And I love working on Pintos. Would be really great, but I just don't have that much vacation time hahahahaha....Good luck on Wildfire...he'll be a beauty some day....Larry :police:
Dwayne: Well...if you wanted to ship her, I'd work on her. Yes...you're right, if I do clone a Pinto to the Sprint package, it'll all have to be original and stock. I do love the souped up Pintos I see on this site, but my love for the Pinto includes keeping them as original as possible, even down to the fabric in the seats. There are different varieties of Pinto lovers out there, those like me who want to keep them looking like the day they came off the assembly line, and those who wish to give them a little flair and personality. I guess that's what makes this site so spectacular, there are just all kinds of Pinto lovers, and all kinds of Pintos. Please, if you stop over in Indiana on your trip, let us know....I can get anywhere in the State in about 4 hours, so we could meet you all anywhere for a bite to eat. Have a great day....if I don't see you in 2010, hope to see you in Carlisle in 2011....Larry :police:
Well....gonna work all week on getting the 1971 Pinto ready for it's second car show, held this next Saturday, during festival days in Daleville, Indiana. The car will look fantastic come Friday, can't wait for the show. I've been working on a name for this Pinto, and have been considering something like Sciscoe Pony. What do you think??? I had a great friend early on in my career, who died of cancer in 1993. His last name was Sciscoe. Thought this could be appropriate, but not sure I like the pony with it, or go something else, like Sciscoe Raider, Sciscoe Hornet, Sciscoe Trunkster, Red Hot Sciscoe (Capt. Red for short). I don't know, what do you think????? I really want to get a name for the car, and I want to honor my buddy....I just can't come up with something that just gives me that BAMMMMMMM!!!! I want. Larry :police:
How about Pinto de Sciscoe?
Dwayne
Larry, did your late friend have a nickname? Here's some ideas... Sciscoe Kid, Sciscoe Girl, Sciscoe-A-Go-Go, Sizzlin' Sciscoe, Sciscoe's Honor... :)
Sciscto? Scinto?
WOW!!! you guys came up with some great names. dholvrsn I too had thought about a contraction type name, putting Sciscoe together with Pinto, but none gave me the bam I wanted. Dwayne, really like the Pinto De Sciscoe idea, that's on my "A" list. I truly liked Sciscoe's Honor also, so thanks blupinto....I'm gonna think on that. I had thought about Sciscoe Kid, and I love that name too. Thank you all so much for your help and ideas, I truly appreciated it. Larry :police:
Well...taking the 1971 Pinto to it's second car show tomorrow. A Fall Festival at Daleville, Indiana. I'm really looking forward to it. It's great therapy for me to go to these car shows and look at these beautiful pieces of auto history. I'll post some pix, hopefully, if I don't forget my camera this time. Larry :police:

Dwayne
Dwayne: I remembered my camera this time. Took my 1971 Ford Pinto to the Daleville, Indiana Fall Festival Car Show today. My Daughter Sarah went with me. We got second place in the "BEST FORD RESTORATION" Category. I was excited. I've posted some pix here as well as on my galleries. Notice the Yosemite Sam Floor Mats in the photo of my award, they are just like the ones I had in my 1971 Pinto from High School. Thats why I love EBAY.... Hope you enjoy....Larry :police:
CONGRATS!!!! Man she sure looks good, not sure who got the 1st place trophy but it would have had to be unbelievable. Thanks for sharing the pics. Gonna show the wife told her some of my pinto was up in indiana in a car show she said rite. :rolleye:
The pictures were great, especially the third one and the car looked great too!!
All kidding aside, that is a very nice restoration!!!
VERY cool, Larry!!!
Dwayne
Congrats!! That is awesome!! The car is looking great!!! Congrats on taking second place!! ;D ;D
Dave, Dwayne, Carolina Boy, and Pintogirl....yes, the Pinto did look good for the show. First place went to a fully restored 1941 Ford Truck. It looked good also, kinda made into a hot rod. Anyway, I wasn't expecting anything, I was happy to get second place. Yes Carolina boy, my daughter is beautiful, and I'm very fortunate she'll spend time with me. She's busy with schooling, working full time, social engagements, yet still finds time to spend with Dad. I'm blessed. Dave....If I'm not mistaking, your parts were the first I received to start the restoration on my 1971, so you should feel great about the win too. I appreciate all the support I get from my friends at fordpinto.com. Thanks alot...have a great weekend. Larry :police:
I really do feel great larry thanks, but glad that a couple old rims got me a good friend in indiana. Glad your daughter still hangs with the old man, she is a looker to. My youngins still hang to, makes life good!!!!
Dave...believe me, I know I'm blessed....thanks....
Larry :police:
Called my daughter tonight, and she's going to attend a cruise in with me. We have one monthly at the local McDonald's in Albany, Indiana. A good friend of mine from High School is gonna be there. I'm looking forward to it :D. Here's another picture of my beautiful daughter, which I took at the Daleville, Indiana Fall Festival last Saturday. Larry :police:
That is a beautiful pair rite their larry. Man your havin so much fun your killin me i have got to get mine legal and ready.
Dave: Yes....they're beautiful...especially the brunette...lol. Hey!!! just remember a part of this Pinto is yours....hahaha...thanks... And by the way, when you finish yours, it'll blow mine off the road..... lol Larry :police:
She's definitely a looker, Larry... in fact, I think I prefer HER to the Pinto!!!
Dwayne
Dwayne: Yeah!!!!! me too!!!!!! I still can't believe a 21 year old daughter will actually spend time with her Dad at a car show!!!!! She loves old cars too....I guess it's a curse of our family. She's definitely the keeper, that's for sure....lol Larry :police:
Where did you get the new looking seat covers? Been a long time since I,ve seen any that new looking. Like 1971 or so.

Kids can surprise you! Both my daughters (now 30 and 32) have accompanied to car shows since they were little. They actually share more interest in my hobby than my 16-year-old son does, although he's been to his fair share of car shows too!
Dwayne
dick1172762: My 1971 Pinto came to me with 1980ish Ford Mustang seats. I searched around and found a junked 1972 Pinto that had the proper seats in it I needed. I was fortunate, as whomever had this junked Pinto had placed after market seat covers on it, so when I removed them, the original seats were in pretty good shape, just the wrong color and fabric. I located the original fabric I needed from a company in Michigan, took the seats and fabric to a local upholstery shop, and presto!!!!! they recovered the seats for me, making them look like they did the day the car was made. I repainted and dyed the rest of the interior, which included replacing the dash cap and carpet with new!!!! The interior looks as good as the day it came off the assembly line. My only real issue with the restoration of the interior, was replacing the headliner. The stupid thing was only $50.00 to buy; however, it cost me nearly $650.00 to have it installed. With the Pinto, like some other Fords, you must remove the windshield along with the rear and side windows, to install the headliner. This means paying a glass company to both remove and replace the windows, which included a new windshield seal. I have about $1,500.00 in the restoration of the interior, but as you can see, it was worth it. Thanks....Larry :police:
Dwayne: I'm fortunate both my boys and my daughter love old cars, and will accompany me to car shows when they can. Now...my 5 year old Granddaughter goes to shows with me. She'll walk around and want to see inside the cars, and she even has her favorites. I'm assuming as long as she thinks I'm cool, she too will go to car shows with me, and love these old classics as much as I do. Have a great day....Larry :police:
Congrats Larry! Nicely done. The car sure looks different without the vinyl roof and Mustang rims!
:afro:
discolives78: Yes...it was quite the transformation. I just love the silly car...it's sitting in my garage right now all spit polished and ready for tomorrow nights cruise in, at a local McDonalds in Albany, Indiana. I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for the comment...Larry :police:
My Granddaughter has been sick this week :P, and her Mommy had to go to the hospital for a few hours, we're having a baby soon, thought it might be today. Anyway, Grandpa had to stay home and couldn't go to the cruise in tonight, so I guess the 1971 Pinto is tucked away until next Saturday, which should be her last car show of the season. One of our local High Schools is having a car show to raise money for their Senior trip. Looking forward to it, at least if all goes well.....Larry :police:
Larry,
Sorry you missed the show but at least you had a good reason! Hang in there, and you'll make it next weekend!
Dwayne
Hope the little ones ok, and congrats on the new one. larry i know you dont mind a bit missing anything for the grand babys.
My youngest 6 months is staying with me now while my son and daughter inlaw are up on the hill hunting and my oldest 1 yr old this weekend is staying all night with me tonight ;D happy happy. love to get them neck hugs!! always be another car show down the road just hit the ones you can.
David: God blesses us with so much, but I think the biggest blessing he's given me is my grandchildren. I love them so much. Being a Grandparent is a wonderful experience. Enjoy yours also, as I keep reminding my wife, some day they may not want to spend time with us, like they do when they're little. A bonus for me is my 5 year old granddaughter loves my Pintos. She comes outside with me and helps prepare them for car shows, then she goes to the shows with me...how special is that?????? Thanks for the response, have a great day....Larry :police:

Sounds like a dream come true!
Dwayne
Well....it's a cold rainy day today, so it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to get the 71 Pinto out today for the car show. I may go ahead and attend the show, but only to see those who have braved the weather to take their beautiful machines to it. It doesn't start until 1pm, so maybe the weather will take a major change for the better between now and then, but I doubt it. Larry :police:
Nasty here to larry. Hasnt rained today though. My brother needed my truck to haul his car to the track so he left me his new mustang. That silly boy, jumped in turned the traction lock off and took to the road for a little fun :fastcar: all i can say is he should have known better. ;D
David: I know....anyone that knows me is sure to be in trouble if they were to leave a Mustang in my hands for any length of time. Mustangs are my favorite all time car...I've owned 6 in my life time, inlcuding the 1968 I own with my oldest son. My younger son has the 1966, and my oldest in his life time has owned probably 14-15, I've lost count. Hope you had a great day with the New Stang......have a good one. Oh yeah, I guess my car show is today, rather than yesterday, I had it screwed up. If the weather holds....I'm going........Larry :police:
Well here's hoping the weather holds out for you today!!! Take lots of pics for us!! ;D
Well...the weather held out and I went to the car show in Cowan, Indiana. It was great, only about 60 cars there. It was a car show to raise monies for the local High School Senior Class, to help pay for their Senior trip. It was beautiful weather, beautiful cars, and great food. I had a great day!!!!! Larry :police:
Glad things worked out and the weather held for ya!!!

Larry glad you made the show, cant wait till i can make a few drive ins myself. I to have had several mustangs, we have a 65 down to the bone rite now, its going to be my sons. Hopefully have it rolling by spring.

Larry :police:
did they get enough for their trip? i know how hard that can be. my daughter & i went on a trip years back when she was in the 8th grade that started in st. louis, mo. & followed the lewis & clark expedition trail all the way back to montana/idaho to the headwaters of the missouri river for her 8th grade social studies/american history class.
BEST VACATION I EVER HAD
I don't know how much they needed for their trip, or how much they made, but it looked like the car show at least was successful. I had a fantastic day!!!!! Larry :police:
Glad it all worked out and you were able to go!
Dwayne
Yesterday at 10:47 AM God gave my wife and I a beautiful new Granddaughter. Her name is Bailey Marie, and she was 6lbs 6oz and 19 3/4 inches long. She was a month early, but she's perfect in every way. I just wanted my extended Pinto family to share this wonderful time with me....hope you all have a great day....Larry :police:
Congrats, Granpaw!!! :happy_bday: :welcome: Bailey Marie, you have a lot of Pinto Aunts and Uncles to meet!!
Congratulations to the Grandparents and Parents. Welcome to the world Bailey.
well congratulations you old fart. im so happy for you!!!! Glad to her the girls are doing good. and i love the name. Bailey is a lucky little girl. I know her grandparants wont spoil her. :rolleye: ;)
Congratulations, Larry!
Dwayne
Larry.
I was going thru some old posts that I had never read. I saw the one that you posted on the transaction with Reed. Then I remembered that a couple days ago I saw your name on one about that you were a Grandpa, Congrats old man, and it refered to this post. I started reading it about two hours ago. Man what a history. Reed was a great guy. Some of those parts you got came from a car that apintonut owned. Reed, Brian and I spent a great Saturday stripping that car. Somewhere I posted my experience trying to remove the windshield, unsuccessfully.
I was really bummed when Reed said he was getting rid of the car. He really loved the car but it just didn't fit him, he was so tall. I wanted the car really bad but at the time I had 14 cars in the yard, 8 Pintos, and three others at friends houses. My wife said no. Only the second time in 27 years she did so I let her win. If anyone were to tell me now that that was the same car I would not believe it. Amazing!!!! By the way, Reed didn't like the Mustang wheels either. I convinced him to leave them on. I have a set on a 78 rally wagon and they look great.
For your next project, forget the turbos, slicks and stuf, Put a 4.6 DOHC out of a Lincoln MkIII and its IRS in one. I think that is what I want to try. If you want to do the Pintero apintonut has an 80 wagon with the roof cut off that he is trying to get rid of for $500.
Again, AMAZING!!!
P
pintoman2.0: I'm glad you like the 1971 Pinto I got from Reed. It really does look fantastic, and I love the car. I assume maybe you seen it made the Ford Pinto 2010 calendar for the month of September. Just look in the Cafe Press Store if you didn't know. I appreciate the comment, and it's nice to hear from someone who knows a little history on this beautiful piece of Ford history. It's nearly identical to the one I had in High School, way way back in 1972. I loved the car then, and I love it now. Again, thanks for posting, I really enjoyed hearing from someone who knew the car before, and can admire the car after. BTW, if you didn't know I have a gallery set up for the 1971, if you'd like to review it. Have a great Holiday Season....Larry :police:
Hey Larry you old fart  havnt seen you post in like a month was worried about u. Hey howz them grandbabys doin? Hope your all good and wish you and your family happy holidays. Merry Christmas
David: Yes... I was just thinking about that the other day. There hasn't been much to post on the Pinto, and things have been a little hectic around the house. My new Grandbaby developed Jaundice really bad, and had to spend a couple of days in the hospital. Then, I think I told you all my house sold, we moved 75% of our stuff out to storage, then the loan didn't go thru for the buyers. Therefore, I had to last week move all that stuff back home, to keep from paying storage all winter. And of course other things came up, just been a really difficult few weeks. Things seem to becoming more normal, and you'll see me back on again. I have been checking the posts and site, just haven't been posting anything. Thank you for caring enough to post on my site, I appreciate it. I had the same concern a month or so back with Beegle55, hadn't heard from him for a bit, and I got worried. It's amazing how you worry about your Pinto family also..... thanks..... You and yours all have a Happy Holiday Season.....Merry Christmas....Larry :police:
Just wanted to let everyone know I'm still here and checking the site daily. Got the new 2010 Ford Pinto calendar the other day, looks sweet. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year. Looking forward to spending 2010 with my extended Pinto family. Larry :police:
Hey Larry!
We need to get busy and find you another project so you'll have something to post about! Glad you're still here. Hope you have a wonderful 2010!!!
Dwayne
Dwayne: Yes...I was watching a 1972 runabout on Ebay located in Oklahoma City, but I found out it needs a new headliner. That's just too costly a repair for me to make....lol.... Anyway, one year ago today, the 1971 Pinto I bought from Reed arrived in Muncie, Indiana, and her restoration began. I can't believe I've had that beauty a year now.... Anyway, hope your new years is going well for you..... I'll be posting more soon....thanks....Larry
Our local newspaper is doing an article on me in the near future, about my two fantastic Pintos. Probably unusual to have a guy love Pintos so much, and on top of that have two of them in his garage. Anyway, I think the article will be in the paper sometime in the next couple of weeks. The reporter is coming to my home Friday for some pictures of the cars and and interview. I'm a little excited about this.....wish me luck!!!!!! Larry :police:
That's cool Larry!!! I'm excited for you!!
Welcome to 'stardom" LOL!!!! I have been on tv and radio so far!! ;D
More Celeb status , Great Larry ;D

Cant wait to read it.
Confuseus say little people have little minds.
David, is thast you?
Of course it is. You're SmallFryeFarm and you raise wee horses. :o  ;D
The Muncie Star Press was at the house today, a photographer and reporter. They absolutely loved the 1971 Pinto, as the 1972 is at my Mom and Dad's about 2 hours away. They took a lot of photos, and asked a lot of questions. The article will be in this coming Tuesday's (01/26/2010). I think you can just go to www.thestarpress.com (http://www.thestarpress.com), or just google the Muncie Star Press Muncie, Indiana and see the article. It'll be great...I'm looking forward to it.....Larry :police:

Larry,
Thanks for sharing the newspaper article AND for giving the PCCA a plug!
I know you must be proud... I'm proud of you!
Dwayne
Hey guys...thanks for the comments on the Pinto article in our local paper. I think they did a really nice job on the article. The on line article didn't feature the photos the regular paper did. It had a front page headline, then on the 2nd page had some really nice photos of the Pinto. It was pretty much a 3/4 page article, they done me good....lol Thanks again....BTW Beegle55, it was nice hearing from you, don't see you on the site much, and it's nice to know you're still around. Larry :police:
Pretty cool stuff. My wife was born in Muncie (Munchie ;D ) and lived there until she was four when her family moved to WI (around 1975) I personally liked some of the comments made
78squirewagon: Yes...I've pretty much lived in this area all my life, and so has my wife. It's been made famous by Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Armed and Famous (BTW I was working in Law Enforcement in the Muncie area during the taping of this show, and met most of the cast). It's not perfect by any means, but I guess it's as good as other towns it's size. We currently have our home for sale, and plan on moving to Anderson, Indiana, which is about 12 miles West of Muncie. So I guess I'll still be in the area. Thanks fo the comment, yes...I think they did a great article. Larry :police:
Larry just got to read the article. AWESOME.
Looks like they did a great story on you, really enjoyed reading it. ;D
Great article Larry,
You and many others are laying the groundwork for a new perception of the Pinto as a collectible Classic. After we get a few meets in 2010 done , the Big one at Carlilse will really send the car media into a frenzy.
I also have it on good authority , that there will be some Vintage road racing Pintos in attendance. Should be a real extravaganza for us .
Keep up the great work,
Pintosopher
Hey guys..thanks for the comments on the article. Yes...I'm looking forward to Carlisle, and plan on going in 2011...hope to see you all there....Larry :police:
Congrats on the article, Larry! Your Pinto does look great!
Chuck :afro:
Hey Pinto Family!!!!! I haven't posted anything for a while, thought I'd better get back on here. I was shopping thru Ebay the other day looking for a couple of vintage magnets I kept on the dash of my 1971, just to give it the full effect of the original 1971 Pinto I drove in High School. While looking, I came across an old dash thermometer which was just like the one I kept on the dash of my High School Pinto. I had forgotten I even had the silly thing. I know it's stupid, but I bid on it and got it. It looks great on the dash of my newly acquired Pinto. Also, I had been wanting one of those promo watches they handed out in the early 70's for the introduction of the Pinto. They just run too high, but I wanted one for my now extensive Pinto memorabilia collection. So, I took the chance, placed a bid of $10.00, and actually won it. Seems most I've bid on have went closer to $150-$175. Guess it was just meant to be for me to have this one, huh????? Well just wanted to say hello to my Pinto Family, everyone have a great day..... Larry :police:
Wow, Larry - that was a steal on that watch. I think I paid about $180 for mine but it runs and keeps fairly decent time. I used to have a magnetic thermometer on the dash of my Pinto too - hadn't even thought about that thing in years. I had a custom shifter knob that I'm sort of looking for, but haven't had any luck so far. When I traded the Pinto, I took it off and it was used on several other vehicles over the years but it eventually got away from me somehow! In the meantime, I bought a NOS walnut shifter with the Pinto logo. Pretty sharp. If we ever melt out from under all the snow we've had this year, I really want to start working on my Pinto... I've waited long enough, now! Have a great weekend!
Dwayne
Ebay is great Larry but becarfull its addictive, then you end up grounded.
Dwayne: Well I purchased two shifter knobs off of Ebay over the last year or so. One I think is the walnut one you spoke of. The other one I actually bought off a guy who had one on his Pinto in the 1970's. He came across it recently, and decided to sell it. Apparently he kept it all these years, and just decided to sell it. It's in really nice shape. I've seen a few like this one on Ebay over the last year or so. It's a wood knob, has a red/white/blue stripe, alot like the Mustang emblem, then the Pinto Pony over it. Could this be like the one you had????? Let me know.... Larry :police:
smallfryefarms: Yes..Ebay is very addictive, but it seems like everytime I get on there, I find something else I need for my Pinto collection. Do you think I'll ever get it all collected, and won't need anything else???? Thanks...I need to take some pix of my collection and put it with my gallery for the Pintos I have. I'll try to do that soon. My collection is getting quite extensive.....Larry :police:
Hi Larry!
Nope, that isn't the shifter knob I had... in fact, mine had nothing at all to do with Pintos or any other car... the emblem on it was more of a social statement. Maybe I'll run across one someday. If not, the Pinto knob I have will look terrific on my car. I know just how addictive eBay can be! I have made somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 purchases there. That includes some collectible Pinto items (matchbook, drinking glass, watch, keychain, and even my 1972 Pinto, itself!) as well as flat panel TV's, DVD's and videotapes, furniture, clothing, musical instruments, and four automobiles besides my Pinto! I don't even want to think about how many thousands of dollars I've spent on eBay... it would probably make me feel faint!!!
Dwayne
Dwayne: I can only imagine what the Social Statement was...... lol I hope you find it someday, it's funny how these little silly things from our youth, are so important to us now.
Good Luck!!!!! Larry :police:
Larry,
I'm sure you're on the right track!
It was definitely a '70's statement!
One of these days I'll find one!
Dwayne
Larry,
I scored a nice find on eBay about three hours ago... an unassembled original Pinto motorized promo car, still in the box. I think one end of the box is torn, but I'm not too concerned about that. Now I need to decide whether I want to leave it "as is" or go ahead and put it together for display. The nice thing is that I bought it cheap enough that I can do whatever I wish without concern for my investment. I'm leaning toward putting it together and displaying it with my other promo cars, but haven't decided for sure.
Dwayne
Dwayne: Sorry, I just noticed your post on the motorized Pinto promo car. WOW!!!! You got one that's not put together???? I bought one last year, it was already assembled though. I've got a nice Pinto collection going now!!!! I'll continue to buy little interesting pieces, and my collection will grow. If the weather stays nice this week, I'm getting the 71 Pinto out and taking her for a spin. Maybe my wife and I will go get ice cream. It looks like I've sold my house, at least we accepted an offer and it looks like the buyer has an approved loan. So I'll be busy the next couple of months, better get some Pinto time in, while I have the time....lol
Have a great day....Larry :police:
Larry,
I agonized for about a week over whether I should leave the Pinto promo intact, or assemble it. I finally decided to go ahead and put it together. After all, I didn't buy it as an investment and my enjoyment of owning it is greatly enhanced by the ability to exhibit it. Probably not the smartest course of action, but I have no regrets. At least, doing it this way, all my stickers are intact!
You've sold your house? Trading up, or downsizing? Are you staying in the same general area. We've been in our house for more than 12 years and I have no desire to ever move again. Such a chore!
Enjoy that trip to the ice cream shoppe!
Dwayne
Dwayne: Trading 5 acres for a home on a cul de sac. I have 2300 sf now, and looking for something around that size. The yard is a bit much to keep up, and I live down a long lane, it's terrible in the winter. The wife and I are just simplifying our lives.....at least we hope.
Thanks.

Sounds like a plan to me! We live in a subdivision with a small lawn so upkeep isn't too bad, however I also do the mowing, etc. at my mother's since dad passed away six years ago this weekend... she has 2 1/2 acres to mow. I understand your need to simplify! Hope it all works out for you!
Dwayne
Well...my parents actually have been bitten by the Pinto bug. I found a beautiful 1977 Ford Pinto Squire Wagon with 34,000 actual miles on it, in Maumee, Ohio. When I told my parents about it they were hooked, and decided they wanted to buy it. So my daughter, granddaughter, and I went to Maumee Ohio April 10, 2010, and bought this beautiful piece of Ford history. Hope you all enjoy it.....Larry :police:
My wife, daughter, and son are going to a fantastic car show this weekend. I am of course taking this 1971 Pinto I got from Reed, and my son is taking his 1966 Ford Mustang. My son is also taking his girlfriend Paige, and I've invited a special young man to go along with us, we call him Bubba. This is the best car show ever, it takes place in a 1950's town which has been built in a man's back yard. There should be about 400 cars there, and the hamburgers and hotdogs will be a grillin!!!!! If you'd like to see a little bit about this car show, just go to asummerplace.com, it'll tell you all about it. I'll post some pictures. Have a great day.....Larry :police:

Hey Pinto friends.....I haven't been able to post for awhile as my wife and I have been displaced from our home. We sold the home about 2 months ago, and the deal on our condo fell thru. We have now purchased a home in Anderson, Indiana, and should be moving into it in about 3 weeks. Currently we're living with our eldest son. It's working out pretty well, but I'm anxious to get back into my own home again. You all have a great day. Larry :police:
Larry, may your new house keep you warm and dry and become home. ;D

Dwayne
Glad to hear you found yourself a new home! I pray it's nicer for you than your last home and that you are happy with it. Glad to hear things are going well for you! :D
Pinto Family....I will never, ever move again!!!!!! LOL  We've been working with our Realtor, the bank, and HUD, and it looks like we're finally going to get to close on the sale of our new home. Hallelujah!!!!!!! Should be closing next Monday August 23, 2010, and get immediate possession. We moved out of the old home June 10, 2010 and have been living with our oldest son since then. Even though it's been great and we've enjoyed it, I can't wait to get back into my own home. I will keep you all posted on our progress soon. BTW, the 1971 Pinto from Washington State is already tucked away in a garage at my younger son's home in Anderson, Indiana. So it's already been moved to it's new home. I simply cannot wait to get into the house, hope you all have a great day. Larry :police:
Larry,
I can only imagine! We've been in our house for nearly thirteen years and I have NO desire to ever move. The problem is that it's a split foyer and we really need to be on one level since my wife's stroke. We keep procrastinating, but I know we're going to have to take the plunge someday and I really dread it. Hope you'll enjoy your new home!
Dwayne
Dwayne: When you take the plunge, here's one Pinto buddy who will come and help you move. Just let me know the date, time, and place, I'll be glad to help. Larry :police:

Thanks for the offer, Larry... that's well beyond the call of duty, being that I live in Virginia! Our intention is to stay in this house for as long as we possibly can. My wife has lived here longer than anywhere else she's ever lived, and other than the house I grew up in, the same is true for me. It is truly home and we don't want to leave it if we can continue to cope with the stairs. My son barely remembers living anywhere other than here, although he has some vague memories of our previous house.
Dwayne
UGH!!!!! This selling and buying a house thing has been horrible. We still have not moved, nor have we closed on our new home. It looks like we may close on Wednesday September 1, 2010. Please cross your fingers. The wife and I were slated to go on vacation last week to sunny Florida, but the bank called and wanted to close last Friday, so we canceled our trip. A few days later they called and said there had been a mistake and we wouldn't close until the following week, which is this coming Wednesday. I had canceled my vacation, rented trucks, my sons and daughter took time off to help with the move, and then it's canceled. This is so aggravating. Well maybe Wednesday all our troubles will either be over or just starting. Please wish us luck!!!! Hope all my Pinto friends have a great day!!!! Larry :police:
Man... talk about lousy luck! You'll probably need the vacation more AFTER the move anyway! Hope it all works out for you this week and you can soon get settled into your new home!
Dwayne
Dwayne: Thanks...this has just been so awful, here's the time line:
May 2009, sold our house in the country, we were told everything is a go, we moved most of our stuff to storage. Buyers had home inspection done, they wanted 82 things fixed, the worse being a clogged drain to the least being tightening of a screw. It was ridiculous. We made repairs, which cost us about $500.00, but we did what they asked. Well....they were not able to get their loan, they were denied, after the bank told us it was a go. These new regulations.
November 2009, moved our stuff back to the house from storage.
March 2010, sold our house again to a single woman, she couldn't get financing either.
April 2010, sold our house again, to a man and woman, that went through, but not without great difficulty.
April 2010 made offer and got it accepted on a condo in Muncie. Found out because of new regulations, we couldn't get financing on this particular condo, so that fell through. Therefore, we had no home to go to, and in June 2010 moved in with our son, and that's where we've been living ever since.
June 2010 made an offer on a repossessed HUD house in Anderson, Indiana, and our bid was accepted. All our stuff again moved to storage, pending closing on our new home.
September 2010....YaY!!!! it looks like we just may close tomorrow September 1, 2010. If so we're moving into it this weekend, and this nightmare may just be over.
I'm never moving again....lol Larry :police:
Geez... what a hassle!
We really SHOULD move. Our house is a split foyer and a rancher would be so much more practical since my wife's stroke. It's stories like yours that frighten me into just staying put! Not just yours, but have heard other horror stories too. Here's hoping that everything works out this time and you get to move in this weekend!
Dwayne
Larry, you didn't REALLY want a condo anyway! ;D Here's hoping this house is a GO! ;D
Larry... did the closing take place as expected? Hope so!
Dwayne
Yay!!! we got moved into our new home. The home was very nice; however, dirty from sitting so long. My wife did a great job cleaning the place, while my son and I moved things to the house. We haven't moved much into the home, only because we're painting and reflooring the entire home, so it seemed silly to have things inside to move around, while we remodeled. The wife picked out her new kitchen cabinets and appliances this past weekend, so we should be in great shape, in about 5 weeks. Glad this nightmare is over, and cannot wait to get back to normal. I'll be on the internet nightly now, and can spend more time with my extended Pinto family. You all have a great day......Larry :police:
Larry,
I am so happy to hear that things have finally worked out and you are settling into your new house. You are definitely right... if you're remodeling to the point of new flooring and new cabinetry, the less stuff you have in the house, the better! It may make the next several weeks a little rough, but it will be worth it in the long run. Enjoy!
Dwayne
Pinto Family, my wife, youngest son and daughter are going to the ON THE RIVER CAR SHOW in Vevay, Indiana this Saturday.
This will be my 3rd year in a row. I'm taking the 1971 trunk model and 1972 Runabout, I'm really stoked. There's usually about 300 cars there, and it's held right along the river banks of the Ohio River at what use to be the Ferry Landing in Vevay. I spent a lot of time at this Ferry Landing when I was a kid, and even rode the Ferry across the river I bet a hundred times. I cannot wait for this show, it's always one of my favorites each year. Will post some pictures once I'm back on the internet. Everyone have a great day!!!!! Larry :police:
Have fun and takes lots and lots of pictures!!!
Dwayne
Good for you Larry! I'll bet you'll have fun! ;D
The On The River Car Show was fantastic!!!!! Had a great time with the family and some close friends. There were about 300 cars there, and a lot of really nice classics. Believe it or not, I had the only 2 Pintos there....LOL. Had a great time, will post some pictures this week, once I'm hooked up to the internet. You all have a great day...... Larry :police:

Sounds like a great show, Larry. Yeah... I believe you! In the past five years, I have seen precisely ONE Pinto at ONE car show (excluding my 2008 trip to Carlisle)!!! It was a very nice red '74 Runabout and the owner was nowhere to be found! That was three years ago, I think. They are definitely a rarity at a car show! Looking forward to the photos!
