The speedometer is off on my 78 CW it is about 10 mph too fast as near as I can tell. Do I go up in teeth to slow it down or do I go down in teeth?
Try one with two more teeth for starters.

I agree; if i recall, each 'tooth' change is about 5%. Also, the gear doesn't have to be from a Pinto- I think many Ford speedo gears are the same- i remember putting one from a '60s Mustang into an '80s pickup. Years ago I grabbed an assortment at the wrecking yard. I think they are color coded too (but i may be thinking of Mopar)
Lugnut is right Fords are color coded. Fred :)
more teeth to slow it down, about 3 mph per tooth. should be a number stamped on the end (really small) for the # of teeth and an "R" meaning it turns to the right
There is also a difference between automatic and manual speedo gears on Fords.
I heard that it's about 5 mph difference for each tooth. Except that I was told this by a professional GM mechanic. So what do they know? ;D
Thanks guys, I installed a 19 tooth today but I have not driven the car yet as I am changing the door seals. The car had a 17 tooth in it. I also have a 21 tooth in case I need it. I will let you know what I find. According to a calculator that I found on line I need a 21 tooth. That is if I believe that I really have 3:40's in the rear ;D
I drove the car to the swapmeet this morning and could tell it was better but it was hard to tell how far it was off. I need to find one of those speed boxes. I think I know where there is one but it is out of my way. I guess I will need to make a special trip to check it out.
