I need to make an offer on a 77 Sedan, 2.3l automatic here in Boise.
The car's body is in GREAT shape, with no dents or visible rust, however I do not know what the floors look like. It has been repainted from yellow to the dark blue, and some of the original paint shows through around the wheel wells. The only exterior damage I could find on it was that the rear bumper is pushed down about an inch lower than it should be on the driver's side, and the front grill has been "hand crafted" by the previous owner. That and the side mirror glass is cracked.
The interior is definitely nothing special though...
No sun visors
No radio
Gauge cluster is has no chrome trim left
Glove box is sticky
Seats have been changed out for ones from a different car
Rear seat is covered, so I don't know the condition on it's vinyl
Rear interior panels have black paint flaking off it, they were green.
Door panels have been redone with solid vinyl
Dash was "re-vinyled" by someone, but there are lots of bumps under it
Head liner has 5-6" seperations in the back, and on the sides of the rear window
Hood pull broke away from the plastic retainer
Seat belts are torn/frayed half way through on the driver's side, and plastic pulley covers are broken
Passenger side door sill is broken/rotted in half
Steering wheel has been changed out for a "GT" one
Rear deck has four 6 1/2" speakers across it and the plastic end pieces are missing
Door seals are rotted half way through
The only good thing I could find about the interior is that the carpet was still in one piece.
The motor seemed to be just fine. It was dirty, but no visible signs of oil leakage. It does have some lifter noise though, which didn't go away in the fifteen minutes I was there and it was running. It wasn't too bad for 120,000 miles though
I didn't have the chance to drive it since the roads are icy and slushy. It does have a full set of studded snow tires though.
The price he has posted for it is $2,495, and his friend offered him $1,000 for it but he wouldn't go that low.
Is it even worth anymore than $1,000? I understand that the body is in great shape and there are no signs of rust, but the interior is trashed, the rear bumper has some damage to it, and the engine needs some valve train work.
What do you guys think?

Boy, these pricing questions are tough. I'll say this - I paid over $2k for my wagon, it was all original, and had a lot more going for it than you stated on yours. Of course, it needs EVERYTHING mechanical, and had floor rust, which has been repaired, and a cowl hole, which still lets water in (won't be fixed until spring). I still feel I paid too much, though I got a very solid body 9Texas car) which I suppose is where my money went.
With your exhaustive laudrty list of items (many which are "age" related), I am more concerned about the valve train noise. My guess? he is about $1000 too HIGH on the price. I would guess he'd come in between $1500 and $2000 if you'd "push" him, but I'm not sure that's gonna happen. $2495 is way overpriced, IMHO.

That is what I was thinking!
What I was attempting to get at with the extensive list of interior issues, was to give an idea of how much work it would take to bring the car back into "decent" shape. Not restored, but decent shape. There is a lot that needs done to it to bring it back to original, and even then, still need work. I was thinking of offering him $1200, maybe $1100 for it, but I'm highly doubting he would even consider that.
I have a lot of things that I could replace items with, in storage. Like the seat belts, seats, steering wheel, radio, gauge cluster bezel, door sills....
But what scares me the most is the door seals, head liner, and dash pad. The things that are expensive to replace.
MAN,WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE $100-200 PINTOS? I COULDN'T IMAGINE PAYING OVER $1000.00 FOR A PINTO.IT WOULD HAVE TO REALLY IMPRESS ME.I KNOW THEY ARE RARE,BUT THEY ARE STILL PINTOS................JUST A THOUGHT.TOMMYS.
when i bought my stinkbug the guy wanted 2200 for it.. after a few days I went back and offered him 13 hundred dollar bills and he took it. cash in hand seems to work!! I personally wouldn't go over 7-8 hundred for that pinto the only reason being it is a trunk model (non existant where I live) 500 if it was a hatchback
Way too much. Too many serious problems. The valvetrain noise is most likely a worn cam lobe due to lack of oil changes. That only leads to more problems. Pass unless you get a really good price. My 2 cents.
I guess we're seeing some appreciation. I just wouldn't go for an auto unless it had a 2.8 in front of it. Around here that would go for 1000 to 1500.
a thousand is the highest i would go on that car. with the work stated that needs to be done you might spend that extra 1495$ on rare parts and other things. (everything adds up fast)
I suppose it depends on location, but around here (Northern Calif) that car would bring around $800. Here's what $1500(asking)will get you in the SF Bay area: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/965034593.html (http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/965034593.html) Or make this guy an offer and drive it home: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/cto/967417641.html (http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/cto/967417641.html) 4-Speed and Working AC- How cool is that!

Now both of those Pintos lugnut posted look reasonable in price compared to the one I am looking at.
The guy wanted me to let you guys know about the car and see what you guys thought and get back to him with an offer. So I will let him know and try not to insult him. However, reality is reality and value of a Pinto these days is really only how much it is worth to the owner, unfortunately.
