Title: Starter motor squeeze by
Post by: SageNip on September 09, 2004, 08:20:51 PM
Hey, I am having the toughest time replacing my starter motor.  My 1980 2.3 Wagon came stock, then I put a Hooker header on it and straight piped the exhaust to the muffler.  Eventually the starter burnt due to the downpipe being so close to it.  So, I take the starter motor out of my parts Pinto (the whole steering and crossmember were previously removed from this one).  Now, my Wagon is sitting in my driveway and I have no easy passage to work with.  Is there any kind of short cut or do I really HAVE to remove the crossmember and steering gear?

Thanks,
Sage

Remove the motor mount bolt and jack up the motor to gain clearance,

at least this works on my 71-72/2000cc...

It shouldn't be as difficult as the starter on my '74 mustangII w/ a88 5.0HO I had to remove the mount from the engine, the stand from the frame & use a 3ft wobble extension!!

what scott said should work, when i've had to remove the starter that worked by just taking out the passenger side mount and jacking it up a little.

Okay guys, I'm going to give it a try.  I towed the car out of the driveway (with my ZX2, not my nipples).  Now I plan to push-start it so I can take it to my garage where I have access to lifts, jacks and just about any tool that they'll let me use.  Thanks for the help!

By the way, Scott can you send me the kicking pony logo on the menu bar to the left?  I want to put it on my Pinto Page and possibly have it tattooed on me as well.

Thanks,
Sage

Well guys thanks for the help, but it didnt need it anyway.  Apparently when I first diagnosed the problem I assumed the relay went bad, so I replaced it with the one from my parts Pinto.  After an unsuccesful push start, I switched it back to the original relay.  The push start went well, so I got to my garage and the damn relay must have fried from the push start.  So, to test the new starter motor, I needed ANOTHER relay.  Good thing for me there's an early 80's Mustang in their yard with a 2.3 engine.  SO I swapped the relay AGAIN!  Just to see what would happen I turned the key and BA-BOOM!  Engine started like there was no problem!  If I ever need to do the starter motor, I'll be sure to post about it!
