Does anyone know if a 1974 Mustang II gas tank is the same as a Pinto ? The Pinto is a 1972 sedan and the Mustang II is a 1974 trunk model. Thanks

The 74 and later Pintos take a different tank. I have heard the M II tank is the same as the Pinto one, but I can't confirm this.

I was at my Ford dealership checking up on some fuel sending unit comparisons and remembered your post, so I took the chance to find out what will work for you!
74-76 Mustang II tanks will interchange with 75-76 (non-wagon) Pintos. - D5FZ-9002-B
77-78 Mustang II tanks will interchange with 77-79 (non-wagon) Pintos. - D7FZ-9002-A
The last numbers are part numbers if you feel the need to purchase a new tank from Ford, however I did not check availability.
I hope this is of help to you!
Thanks for researching this. One up for you.......
I have tank for $70.00 + ship. Fred :)
Greetings,
After researching the Ford Pinto Parts Number catalog reference on this site, I noticed a few issues with the 71 thru 73 fuel tanks. There are ( 3) parts numbers for the Pinto sedans and that might include Hatchback models too. This led me to re-read the Article on this site regarding fuel tanks explosions, and there were Pintos that were built in Ontario ,Canada that had " Stronger " rear end structure and this might have been why the Tanks had multiple numbers . I wonder just what these cars had for the improved safety.
Weigh with your Input, I'm doing a Fuel cell for the Spare tire well ( Go to ATL for these options)
