Title: Mirror?
Post by: pintogirl on November 23, 2008, 12:06:27 AM
As you all know I am fairly new at the world of Pinto. LOL  I have been seeing several different mirrors, on ebay and on my own cars. My question is, what is 'stock' and what is not?

Here is an example of some of the mirrors I have seen.

This style is on my grey car.

This style is on my yellow car ( now on my green car, LOL)

I also have a mirror similar to the above mirror, but with a longer attatchment area. Sorry no pic as of right now!

So, what is a stock mirror for a 71 and what is aftermarket? Or are they all stock but different package deals?

Thanks!!
Kim

All mine had the chrome mirror on the driver and none on the passenger

The chrome mirror is the standard mirror.  The remote mirror or sport mirror as they are called are optional.  The 71-73's with the sport mirror option have a non-remote pass side mirror where the 74 and later cars have a pass side remote mirror.  All sport mirrors are painted body color.  The Pinto and Mustang II share the same mirrors.

Thanks for that info!! I wasn't sure if the chrome mirror was a stock or aftermarket!! My grey car has the chrome mirror.

What about the differences in the sport mirror?  My 71 yellow car has this mirror.

My 71 brown car has this one,

See the differences in the attatchment bracket? Ok I just previewed the post and it is actually hard to tell the differences, but the brown one is about 1 or 2 inches longer!

Ford had basicly just 2 base lenths of Sport mirrors through the years for most of their cars. 7.75 and 5.5 inches + / -. Your brown mirror may be a replacement from some other ford. The picture is of my 1969 Mustang mirror (long base) with one I pulled from a 77 or so Pinto (short base). You can see the bases slant differently (Mustang leans backward) and because other ford's side-of-the-door angle differs from the Pintos', if you get just any Ford remote sport mirror on E-Bay, it may have the wrong tilt angle once mounted. The Mustang base angle is about the same as the Pinto.

The one with the longer bracket looks like the sport mirrors I regularly see on a Ranchero. The shorter bracket is definitely Pinto/Mustang.

Easy way to tell the differences during a quick glance... The point of the mirror for the Pintos and Mustangs extends forwardly past the mounting base. The Ranchero/Other have the point of the mirror even/flush with the forward area of the bracket.

the longer bracket mirror is the ones the use on the larger cars ford offers, LTD/Ranchero pre-pinto platform mustangs ect. i see them all the time in the junk yards here on larger cars. the pinto ones have a different slant and smaller base.
