You sound like you're on the right track...have a friend ground a spark plug wire to metal and crank the engine to see if you have spark. If you do, then check to see if you have fuel going to the carb....or it could be your fuel pump. Disconnect the fuel line from the carb and put it in a container, and then crank the motor. Check to see if you get any fuel in the container, if you have spark, and fuel, then it might be the carb....hope this helps.

Sounds like two different issues, battery going dead, then no spark. Maybe a ground problem?

If it turns out to be a bad ground, be sure to check your coil and ICM.

A bad voltage regulator COULD fry the battery but leave the alternator intact. However, unlikely.

This happened to mine a year and a half ago while driving my ex home and it took me three days to figure it out after tearing apart the wire harness to find a short. :( In my case it turned out the voltage regulator went bad a little while before, and I ended up frying my whole charging system including the battery.

kind of stuck when it was running before it died turned lights on went real dim came off and on again this is why i thought it was alternator or battery which i switched out and took alternator off had tested said was fine when i was driving it volts dropped from 12 to 9volts when fan came on even today tried to jump start it with other car turned fan on its on a switch dropped volts again  i put a bigger fuse in the fan i dont think has anything to do with it  with fan on  again before you new it battery was dead again when hooked up to jumper cables with other car running i think it is 2 seperate things no spark and maybe bad ground now anyways back at it again well go to shop soon has im getting tired of it more i work on it more beer i drink which means wife on my but  thanks lol

Does your fan use a relay?

The key word here is "voltage drop", could be power or ground side, when you add a load to the system, (the fan) the volt gauge goes from 12 (which is low to begin with) to 9, meaning that the voltage path has high resistance. The ignition system needs a good 12v to fire, especially a MSD.

Might be something as simple as a bad cell in the battery. 12 volts doesn't sound like a good battery, it should be above 12 volts if the charging system is working correctly, probably around 12.5 volts. If the battery isn't right, the MSD ignition won't work correctly, as stated above, you need 12+ volts constant to run the ignition. The battery will drop voltage rather quickly if a cell is bad and a load (fan) is turned on. Just a thought...
