I have a question on pop out windows.!!
In a previous post I was told that there are plastic things that can break if I try to remove them. Well, because I am going to fix my brown car that needs a pop out window, and get parts from my yellow car that has 2 pop out windows, I will need to pull those pop outs out of the yellow car.
I noticed that the brown car's pop out's are held in by pop rivots. So I checked the yellow car, and it too has pop rivets.
The question is, because both cars have pop rivots holding the window on, am I safe of haveing to worry about the plastic that I was told that could break?? I can easily put new pop rivots in to re install the window into the brown car!!!
Thanks,
Kim
Kim, my 73 has factory popout windows with the plastic inserts, the same as the later cars. I had a 72 beater that I drove this past winter that did not have popout. I believe that the 71/72 cars have a different setup but I have not seen it in person. I believe they use a metal tang instead. Please post some pictures of your yellow car's popout windows. I have a feeling that you are going to be able to swap your windows easily.

Ok, I will post some pics of the windows tomorrow!!!
The plastic things are what holds the windows in to place on some cars??
Yes, the plastic inserts hold the windows in place as well as act as a hinge so it can pivot open. The wagons use the same concept however they are different inserts than the hatch/sedan cars. The inserts get brittle with age and if broken the window will not seal properly. I look forward to seeing those pics
Ok here are the pics!!

To me it looks like the metal hinge does all the work. It basically just bends back pushing onto the seal for the window, in the open position. Then simply returns to original shape when closed. I don't see any type of plastic anywhere in the window or hinge areas!!
What do you guy's think?
You know, I think I may be able to just switch out the glass and not mess with the pop rivots!! I didn't pay attention untill I reread my post and looked at the pics again. I just went and check and the window glass is held by a hex bolt. I can just r&r the glass and leave the hinges in the car!! Or, do you think piece holding the glass to the hinge would fall apart?
The plastic clips were on the later cars.
If it were me, I would drill out the rivets.
If they have a steel pin in the middle (I think they do), use a sharp punch to 'pop' in the pin, then drill out the alum. part of the rivet. I would either use new rivets or sheet metal screws to install the new one. I don't like to mess with the bolts in the glass when I don't have to.

Thanks for the pictures. I would think that you would be able to swap them either way. I found some of those metal tabs NOS but I was not sure how they worked till now. You are lucky that you do not have to deal with the plastic inserts as the rest of us do.
Out of curiosity are the plastic tabs interchangeable with the metal tabs? Just curious since I dunno if it was done or tried before.
