Title: Another Pinto find
Post by: sleeper on November 08, 2008, 08:09:27 PM
I can't BELIEVE IT, I just found another 72 RB (FOR FREE) it's been in a garage sience 86 (19,000 miles) What is  the safest way to wake it up w/o damaging the engine? I realize I can't just add gas & a battery. I've all ready removed the gas tank, DUMPED out the VARNISH,flushed the tank, installed a new fuel pump. It's a 2000/4 spd.

You will want to replace all rubber hoses, install a new fuel filter, make sure the carb is good & clean. Also pull the plugs and squirt in some oil in each cylinder. Let it sit for a little bit & then slowly crank the engine over by hand with a socket.

That should help you out. Don't forget to also change the oil as it will definitely need it anyways.

Some people are just are born lucky...CONGRATS....WOW...and FREE???   OK ...my goose bumps are over now...VERY IMPORTANT in my opinion.....REMOVE the VALVE COVER. The 2.0 is subject to condensation (RUST) under the cover over time that can waste a cam etc EVEN if it's been in a garage. IF all is OK then put assembly lube on the cam lobes and pour oil in from the top to drain thru. The idea is to treat it like a new rebuilt engine thats DRY so you don't cause galling and drastically shorten the life of the engine. Change the oil and filter again after a heat cycle or two. Put in a magnetic replacement drain plug. Cheap insurance.

Hopefully you don't have this problem:

The best way I found to prime a 2.0 is to remove the radiator, remove the timing cover, unhook the timing belt, and spin the oil pump pulley with a drill (using a few extensions to reach it). It is nearly a straight shot to the oil pump pulley above the valence and below the bumper.

This will build normal oil pressure without having to actually turn the engine over.

Here's a pic... not a great one, but you'll get an idea.

As 71HANTO and fastbak390 have stated, getting oil to the valve train before cranking the engine with power is a must!

fastbak390's explanation of priming the oil pump is the exact same way I did my engine after it's complete rebuild and I haven't had a problem since, aside from a sticky #4 hydraulic lifter, but the lifter noise goes away after the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

In addition to all that has been suggested, you may also want to consider the oil spray tube.

It probably would be good to soak it in a good solvent for a few days and then blow air through it before you try to pump oil.  As you put air to it you can make sure that all eight ports are clear.

Just a thought,,,,,

Long live the two liter !
