Hey guys,
I disappeared for a while when the money ran out but now have gotten back into gear with the car. Anyways, two days before Carlisle I found out I had a bad tranny mount on my Pinto so I was unable to get the replacement tranny back in the car. After that I left the car in the driveway out of aggrivation for the car. I worked so hard to get her fixed only for failure to get me at the end. I stopped working on it after that.
Now I am back to work on her & have done the following: cleaned all the bolts to mount the flexplate, got a couple bolts for the flexplate since I lost one when I let the parts sit in the garage, bought new seals & tranny mount and am ready to proceed.
I have also addressed the situation with the common cold of the Pinto, none other than the water leak.. Tonight I was bored so I went ahead & removed both the glove box liner & passenger side heater duct. Well, I found out in the upper passenger corner there looks to be a place where rust has caused a leak along the seam. Tomorrow after work I am going to remove the heater box from the car (hopefully) and further diagnose the problem.
I was thinking of removing the heater box anyways so I could pressure test the heater core, as well as flush it to make sure it is good. There's no coolant in there anyways so I want to make sure all is well before I put coolant back in the car. This will also give me a chance to replace the heater hoses on the car.
No pics at this point as there is no way for me to take them. I might take some but I haven't decided yet.
any time is a good time to address the heater box, few things are as disappointing as having to mop up antifreeze off the carpet.
exactly my point lol. There's no time like the present to check it out.
I found the water leak... Same place as all the other. Pintos out there I now will have to remove the heater box to get to it so I can fix it..
Now the (lack of) fun can begin.
I like your phrase "common cold". Yup, I still need to cure mine....that project is next.....

Lol.. Thanks, it just popped in my head when I was typing about that problem...
Now for an update.
After sitting for months I finally got the timing belt back on the engine. The cover is also back in place, as is the water pump as well.
The radiator is bolted in the car but not hooked up yet. I have to get a new upper hose since the old one disappeared in the garage somehow. The lower one is in good shape, almost new so I'm good there. Next I will bolt up the alternator, and remove the heater box from the car. The transmission will be going in on Saturday.
If all goes according to plan the car will be water tight inside & driveable by the weekend.
Well,
I found the upper radiator hose so I installed it and the alternator. I found a broken wire on the alternator harness so I cut out a section of wire that was bad & soldered in a new piece of the same gauge. The repair turned out good & there is continuity at the connector that was broken before. I also found out by mistake I set the ignition timing 180 degrees out. For whatever reason I set the distributor cap on backwards when checking the number one cylinder so I removed the distributor & reinstalled it with the rotor pointing to number one.
Tomorrow I plan on connecting the vacuum lines & possibly removing the heater box as well.
More to come soon.
Update:
I got the vacuum lines hooked up to the air cleaner & EGR valve but remembered I needed to fix a coolant leak at the intake manifold plate. I pulled it apart & found the gasket I installed was bad, so I got to get a new gasket. I'm gonna use a little blue RTV on there as well just to make sureit seals. Might go ahead & put some thread sealant on the bolts as well just in case. I don't think any went into a water jacket but I'd rather be safe than sorry. What sucked is all the paint I put on that plate came off for some reason. It just flaked off so what I might do to solve the problem is take some 600 grit sand paper to the plate before I repaint it Old Ford Blue.
I also relocated the voltage regulator so I could install the washer/ coolant recovery tank from the Ranger. Pics of that to come soon.
Here's a pic of the bottle installed in the car. It turned out better than I thought it would.
Update:
Originally my dad & I weren't going anywhere for Thanksgiving so I thought I would go ahead & install the transmission in my car. I went ahead & got the replacement tranny in the garage & cleaned the sucker up. It has been sitting outside for a couple years so it needed it.
Before you ask, the fluid has no water in it from what I can tell, but no I don't know if the transmission is any good. I will find out when I put it in.
Plans for yesturday got changed after my dad got a call from my uncle inviting us over.. No problem since I would rather eat food than work on a car anyways lol..
Today I got off work & dad & I pushed the car back up the driveway. I got it jacked up & got ready to install the tranny when I noticed there was a pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft. When I pulled the tranny this past June I found I needed a new crankshaft. The crank came from the engine I was rebuilding, which apparently came from a manual tranny truck. It was from an 80 Ford Courier truck.
Anyways, now the car is back down the driveway still with no tranny. I got the needle bearings out but the outter part of the pilot bearing is still there. I am gonna have to chisel it out & hopefully I won't have to remove the crank to get it out.
Well that sucks!! Do you have to chisel this part out of the car, from under the car? That will not be fun if you don't have a lift!!! As you can tell, I'm not to up on the parts orgin of things!!! LOL
Hope everything comes out ok!! Literally !! LOL
Kim
Thanks kim,
Yeah, it will just have to be chiseled out, but lying on the driveway just doesn't make it too easy... especially with dull chisels. Gotta get a better one.
Been there done that twice. Good luck Matt
Thanks Gerhard, I'm sure I'm gonna need it lol.
Wish there was an easier way to take care of it, but oh well. If I had an engine hoist I would just yank the engine since it's just being held in there by the motor mounts anyways. I'm sure they are trash by now lol.
