Title: REALLY BAD blowby... hELP!!!
Post by: r4pinto on September 01, 2004, 11:07:04 AM
Hey all,

I've been workin on my 78 Pinto alot lately, but one thing I can't fix is the blowby problem... The car sat for about 2 years, maybe longer, so I changed the oil, filter, and pvc valve when I fixed the oil leak.

The problem I have is it still has very bad blowby.. I'm talkin smoke going all over the place when I'm driving the car..

As stated I did change the oil and PCV valve, but it still has the blowby... The oil I'm using is valecraft 10w40. That oil was given to me when I bought the car, and that's why I'm using it.

What can be my problem? The emmissions system on the engine is totally hacked up, so could that be part of my problem? ???

Try doing a compresion test on each cylinder, you might have a bad rings or piston, good luck.

OK...

I was actually trying to avoid doing that, but if that's what I gotta do, then I gotta do it.

I'll let you guys know the results

Does the engine smoke out the tailpipe or just under the hood?
if it sat for two years you could have stuck rings. you might try pulling out the plugs and pouring some top end cleaner or transmission fluid into the cylinders and let it sit over night.
be sure to crank the engine over a few times befor you put the plugs back in. put a towel over the plug holes to keep the  fluid from going everywhere. I have seen engines that have sat for a while smoke for weeks and then just stop ( i dont ever get that lucky)
good luck

It's just severe blowby. before I changed the oil I did use a can of engine flush and ran the car for about 5-7 minutes.

That didn't help. I still have severe blowby... It's so bad I'm losing oil like crazy. It's not burning it, not that I can tell anyways, it's just spitting out the fumes with oil out the valve cover.. I have a secondary oil filter, it's so bad. The breather on the valve cover is brand new, and the one in the air cleaner is sopping wet with oil.

Check the PCV system.

A broken ring can do this.

I found out the motor's going out... It's smoking pretty good out the tail pipe... I've just gotta get me an engine here soon.

update on the problem...

It's now smoking out of the dipstick tube, and is seeming to be going down a cylinder. It's starting to sound like it's on only 3 cylinders, but all the plugs are tight, and wires are on there good.

Is there anything I can do to extend the life of this engine? I don't have the money to get it replaced, and it's starting to get hard to start the car.

unless someone has another solution I'm thinking a rebuild or relacement is the only real cure. You could try to band-aid it with some marvel's mystery oil or Restore, but those are stopgap measures at best. sorry about the bad news, but if the blowby is bad enough to pop the dipstick out then it's REALLY bad

I had a smoke problem so I put in some trany sealer into the oil, next day the smoke was gone.but if your rings are shot try using diesel engin oil, some good thick stuff it may help.Larry

Just thought I'd let you guys know I was just given a 2.3 Pinto motor, so I'll be swapping that in as soon as I go over it real good to make sure all is well in the engine.

Thanx for all the help. You guys always seems to have all the answers in one forn or another. :)

WAIT!!!!!! Before ya start pulling the motor, try this really simple thing that an old Pinto junkie taught me: There is a tube (rubber hose) that comes off of the oil filter mount that goes up to the PCV system. Back in the day (I.E. 1970's) these were notorious for clogging up with gunk from the oil and gasses that pass through it. Take all the tubes and hoses off of the PCV system and clean the heck outta them. The way you described your situation is identical to what my car was doing (PCV filter, air cleaner and valve cover coated w/oil). I tried this 'cleaning' on my own car and it helped a bit but the engine was too far gone. But, give it a try!! I've talked with the oldest mechanic at our shop (And I do work at a Ford dealership. Roy has been with us for 25 yrs.  The first 'New' model Ford that he worked on was a '64 T-Bird) and he agrees. I wish I would've known about this trick years ago. Like I said, give it a try, and please, let me know what happens. I'm curious. Good Luck! Robbo II

I don't think that will help me, as the top speed of the car is now 45 mph. As stated it is smoking out the tailpipe so, all is dead with this engine.

Thanx though
