Title: Turboizing Stock Motor
Post by: dkpony79 on November 01, 2008, 09:52:33 AM
Just found a listing for an Airesearch Turbo set up (intake manifold included) from a carbed 2.3L mustang eng. Where used 79-81. It will accept a holly 5200 carb. Can I bolt this on my stock 79 Pony 2.3L.  :fastcar:  What would the system be worth. Their asking $ reasonable offer considered. ??? I had the Orange Pony out for a  Holloween ride yesterday and found this turbo today. Can I Trick this Treat  ;D . Or Treat the Trick. :o ;D  I'm not looking to reformulate the drive train. Maybe down the road. Would like the Pony to be a little sleeperish  ;). A little gitty up!  Awaiting your Info.

                                                  Thanks, DK

I don't know what it would be worth but don't see why it won't work in the Pinto since the Mustang used the same engine. The only thing I would wonder about is clearance but if an EFI turbo will fit in the car I don't see why this wouldn't.

I should have mentioned that there might be some differences with the internal engine parts, as most of the time turbo engines are a little beefier than the n/a counterparts.

Just my 2 cents.  For all the work to put one of these in they do not make a BIG difference.  I think they are very low boost.  I could be wrong but it is around 3to4 lbs. I think the carb setup limits what you can do with the turbo. I have also road in one in a mustang and it did not run that great.

But the cool thing is it would be differnt.  Draw a lot of attention, you don't see that many.  Not trying to discourgae you just my limited experience with them.

Well I'm back to reality  ::).  :accident:. Thanks for your input! I visited a mustang site & got more info. Some internal parts are different in the turbo motors. Pistons & Valves. My motors fine right now, original. Can use a rocker adjustment but gets me where I want to go. I'll stick to the cosmetic stuff for now. I do have to change clutch though, one stiff son of a gun. As far as I know it's the original. Someone did a crappy job welding pedal post pin, :hypno:. Boy was I suprised  :surprised: when pedal hit the floor. Had to remember how to drive w/no clutch & shortest distance from point A to point B.  ;D  Sucks getting old crawling under dash, but was easy fix. :amazed:

                                       Thanks again, DK

FWIW, the carbed 2.3L turbo is 140hp, verses our 90hp n/a 2.3. 50hp gain. Correct about only 3-4 psi of boost. I doubt that would hurt the cast pistons in our engines.
