I have a 79 Pinto Wagon...302/4 speed car...This car is headed to the drag strip only, not sreet driving....Can the fenderwells be taken off of this car,? Im not sure if the fendw. is part of the unibody or not !!! Thanks for any help.
If I am not mistaken (and I have a '76 wagon as a reference - so it may be different) - the fenderwell is only a "small" plastic piece that acts like a splash guard, and >CAN< be removed. There is also another plastic splash guard behind the headlight assemblies.
Chris
In a later Pinto, the splash guard is like a big plastic fender liner. Remove a whole lot of flat stubby philips screws and hope that they're not too rusty. Pry out the plastic tacks on the inner fender well. Then wrestle the monster out.
Or you can wait till you blow a tire and the steel will take it out for you. :hypno:  Fred
I believe he is referring to the steel "inner fender" as opposed to the plastic liner. The reason I surmise this is I don't think anyone would assume the plastic to be part of the structural inner fender (Unibody). Maybe I'm mistaken???
Anyway. NO! All the steel in the car is primarily structural. Drag cars may cut it out if the roll cage is designed to support the area. That would need to be one properly engineered and installed system. The plastic liner, yea, you can pull that.
Tom
yea, it is a darg car. was wanting to remove the steel infender, from wheel well. It would make it alot easyer to build a set of fenderwell headers....It has steel manifolds now, I may go with a set of shorty headers if i can find a set that will fit...by next year i hope to turn it in to a Gasser type of car...Straight axle and all !!
Well, there are the Sawzall and the gas wrench....

Being a drag car I'm guessing it is caged, so yea, take 'em out, the fenderwell headers kinda go with the "gasser" look! BTW, how 'bout some pic's?!!
I just got the Wagon....It has a small block ford. I was told that it is a 302, not even sure of that. This is my first Ford to own. I'm going to get on-line to find out how to ID the motor, Trans, and Rear..I think that the rear, may have been welded up ..No noise, but when you take a sharp corner, i can hear one wheel slip. I had a 55 Chevy Drag car, and we welded up the rear,( Cheap Posi).. I can see a tag on rear, but have not gotten under it to look...I don't think its the orig. I'm going to take the int. out and get rid of it...If there is anyone in the Dallas Tex area, that needs this stuff ,let me know. I don't have a cage in it yet, but it will have some before it hits the strip..It is a Cru. Wagon, I think. It has small glass windows (Round). I'm going to get rid of them..It will be a Sedan Del. If anyone needs the Int. (red) Porthole windows, and rear window louvers, please contact me....(469-951-5281) I will get some photo's up soon....I will take before and after shots...I think this will be fun, for $1200.00 you cant go wrong....
Shooter1:
I am in Richardson, I would be very interested in your interior parts; I have a '76 wagon and I know that some stuff will work for both. Let me know here, I am also sending you an email.
Chris
rear window louvers?...Ooh ooh gimme!
please of course..
