Title: new wheels for my car
Post by: r4pinto on August 26, 2004, 03:29:36 PM
I'm trying to get 13" wheels back on my car, as I prefer them on the Pitno, and I got some from an 86 Ford Escort Pony, but they won't fit on the front without rubbing.

They actually rub to the point that when I tighten up the lug nuts the wheel is locked up... does anyone know which wheels from another car, whether it be ford or whatever, will fit my car?? I want to go with hub caps as I like the looks of them.... If anyone has any or know what car I can get some from, please let me know.

Thanx

You will probably have to get some wheels from a rear wheel drive vehicle.  FWD cars use wheels that are offset toward the inside.  Any four lug wheel from a fox body Mustang, Thunderbird, or Cougar will fit, though you may have to use spacers if you go with some wide wheels.

you know what??? I shoulda known that, as I work for a tire company, and install custom wheels all the time... I'll go ahead and say that it's cuz I'm on vacation, and not thinking about those things...lol  Thanx for the tip.

Be careful what you buy, I picked up a set of mustang gt rims from a guy I know, $20 bucks aint bad, but then I went to put my 14 in tires on them and the rims were metric size, not wanting to spend $160.00 a tire for my ride, I have to go to Les Schawb and buy new rims wictch are alot cheeper than 4 new tires. Anybody need GT rims, come and get them, there free.

i believe you can use honda rims but you will have to have the holes made a little wider..   thats what i was told when i was looking at honda rims and i asked the vendor if they would fit a ford.. and thats what he told me..   i dont know   :-\

As a professional tire installer I wouldn't do that. Boring out the lug holes is a very unsafe practice that can lead to stud failure... Also, he probably didn't tell you that the studs on a Honda are 12 X 1.5 ball seat lug nuts instead of Pintos 1/2" tapered seat lug nuts.. Interchanging the 2 can be very bad.... the wheel will fall off as the tapered lug nut won't seat right... I've sen a few Hondas come into the shop that had wheels about to fall off, cuz the owner replaced the lug nuts with tapered type instead of the ball seat lug nuts.

Not all Mustang GT wheels were the anoying TRX metric wheels. Some were 14" and I belive the 15's didn't come out until about 85 or so. Being 16 in 1983, I remember friends cars with the TRX wheels. It was cheaper to buy a new set of rims & 14" tires then those metrics. Man, I still remember racing that girls '82 Gt with my baja bug after the friday night football game, smoked my butt.

I think you just opened up some memories for me.
