In my 71 Pinto there is a loud and constant groan from the rear end whenever the car is moving. I figure it is a bad bearing somewhere in the rear axle. How hard is it to replace the axle bearings in a 71 6 3/4 axle? Thanks.

Could be the outers, inners, or pinion. Also it could be the gears themselves (my guess).
Does it make the noise all the time or on accel, decel, and/or turns?
I think the 6.75" is like the 8", but I never pulled a 6.75" apart; I just replace the entire axle.
For the outers on an 8": I remove the axle shafts and bring them to a shop to have the the bearings replaced when needed. I don't have the (proper) tools to R/R the retainers on the shafts, but the shafts are easy enough to remove from the car. I COULD do them myself, but for the 20 bucks it costs me....

The rear axle makes noise all the time. As soon as I start rolling, "grrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooaoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" from behind the rear seat. makes no difference if turning, accelerating, decelerating, or anything. The only time it i quiet is when i am stopped.
I would pull the differential cover off and check out the ring gear to see if the pinion offset is correct. It may be time for a rebuild. If it's a 6.75 you can count on either getting a used one from the salvage yard or replacing it entirely, as there are no parts available for the stock 6.75.
Definitely pull that cover and see if there is anything abnormal going on, though. You can get a replacement gasket for it from any Parts America or NAPA, depending on whether or not they have it in stock.
Parts America Part No. RDS13073
NAPA Item#: FPGRDS13073
Wow. Nobody sells bearings for the 6.75 anymore? :-\ I just took it for a drve and I am leaning towards the actual gears being either worn or misaligned. Ugh. Axle grease is just about my least favorite automotive chemical.
Hmmm. Rockauto shows all bearings being available.
I guess I need to jack it up and inspect the gears. >:(
I'm sorry, I kept thinking of my own axle work when I wrote that. The bearings are still available, however the pinion bearing preload spacer is not. So if you ever have to change your pinion oil seal at the front of the differential, or ever have to replace the pinion bearings (which requires the preload spacer to be removed), there isn't anyone who sells the spacer.
I'm a little depressed about the fact I can't get mine fixed just because of a little metal cylinder. My Sedan's rear makes a slight thud when taking off and shifting roughly into second. According to my manual and my ring gear wear, my preload on the pinion is causing a toe-out offset where the pinion and ring gear meet.
>:( That sucks. I guess i will have to get in there and set it up as best I can then start looking around for a new rear axle. Are parts readily available for the 8 inch axles? :P
8" rears were used in 'popular' cars like early Mustangs so you can get everything you need for them (IF you need parts). All the 'meatballs' are the same.
I have pulled 8" rears from junk yard or parts cars that were sitting there for 20+ years, and have them be good.
If you were close by I could help you with a good 6.75" axle assembly; I have a pile of them.

Hmmm, according to the Pinto member map you are in Iceland, so I don't think that qualifies as "close."
Maybe I will ask around my neck of the woods and see if anyone has a good condition 6.75 for cheap. Better four u-bolts and four tiny bolts on the u-joint that mucking around inside a differential.... ::)
Not that I should speak for him, but for sake of clarity, Bill is not in Iceland. He is in New England somewhere (Connecticut)?. Still not close for you, regardless.
Chris
Hmmm. Someone needs to update their pin on the member map then. ;)
I have a FREE 6.75 rear drum to drum with 24,500 original miles or a Maverick 8 inch five lug axle to axle for $100. At MY door. I won't even TRY to ship these but I will cooperate with a shipper you contract. I'm in the north part of Los Angeles.
This happen to me once, and all that it amounted to was the nut on the yolk had loosen up and caused a slight misalignment on the pinon gear...might want to torque the yolk nut and take it for a spin b4 dismantaling the rearend...you might get lucky :amazed:
Thanks for the offer on the rear, but I think dealing with a shipper would be more hassle that it is worth for me right now. I definitely will investigate what I have before I replace it too.

Stop - you're killing me - Texas is too far away!!!

You might first try spinning the wheels w/ the rear off the ground on jackstands, and (carefully!) listen for were the noise comes from. Also try w/ each tire on the ground stopped one side at a time to see if you can isolate it to one side. You might get lucky and have just a bad wheel bearing.

lugnut- I did exactly that last night. It sounds like most of the noise is coming from the driver's side rear wheel bearing, and maybe a little from the passenger side. The center carrier actually didn;t make too much noise. I am crossing my fingers that a wheels bearing and some new synthetic lube in the carrier will fix it up.
