Title: Oil level
Post by: fastfred on October 12, 2008, 04:07:40 PM
Just changed the oil and filter on my 78 pinto 2.3 motor.

I put in a little less than  5 US quarts.  After running the motor for several miles the oil level on the dipstick is showing about 2 inches above the full level.

how much does the motor take?

thanks  Fred

The book that I have says 4qts, 4 1/2 with a new filter.

The bottom of the "safe" mark on the dipstick is about 1 quart low, from there 1 quart will take it to the full mark.  I fill my oil filter almost half way before installing it.  be careful not to tip it too far and spill the oil out though.  Then I add 3 quarts, go in the house and watch a little tv.  come back out and check the oil and add as necessary, so I don't overfill it.

Depends how much your pan is pushed in due to parking curb rash...  :accident:
Of course, if you have a sway bar you don't have this problem as bad.

From what I can remember, I had always put on an empty filter and used 5 qts.  It was always right on full after starting it up and letting it circulate.

The specs say 4.5 quarts with filter and that is all I ever put in. It has always been at the full mark and not over.
