Title: Pinto rack & pinion? questions
Post by: crossy on October 12, 2008, 09:40:47 AM
I can't afford to guess on this one- I see aftermarket MANUAL racks listed for Pintos as 71-72 and then 73-80- only some say 74-80????
that does not make sense, since they changed the front end in 74 to match up with MustangII .
I have seen 73 ONLY racks and i THINK my 73 carries a unique Ford 1973 part number.
my car is low mileage, but Suffered North Jersey and NY city streets and I feel the steering effort is way too  hard from what i remember about my other three 71-72's i had 25+ years ago.  I can BARELY one hand this steering. I didn't get any weaker(I couldn't, LOL). I also  see no where to check fluid level, but see leaks from the rack and the boots are torn.
I'm not afraid to buy a whole new rack , but need to make sure i get the right one . I think i might have another infamous 73 ONLY part here?? OR should I try to rebuild this assuming i can find parts. I see basically nothing listed at advanced auto. ??
thanx, crossy

Most racks run 90w gear oil.  They generally leak at the bellows.  If it hasn't been run dry too long or drawn in too much dirt you might just clean it, put on new bellows and refill it.
I would look for damaged bellows.  If the rack seems dry, put some 90w into the hole and move the rack around. If it feels a lot better then it is just your time and about $20 for boots. If it still feels bad than you likely need to replace it.
