Well..., I don't know whether to be glad almost everything is done on my '73 Turbo Pinto conversion, or to cry because I have reached the dreaded wire harness stage.
First off, let me say I am aware of the recommendation for the Merkur harness. But..., I'm stubborn and cheap and nothing else has been easy on this project, - so why change now. I also adapted the T/C steering column so I can have the intermittent wipers, high beam control AND criuse control. This is, in part, why I want to use the '88 harness in spite of the difficulties.
Everything I have came out of an '88 Turbo Coupe (I know..., I know, the worst harness to start with). I have it all placed out and this is what I'm seeing:
1. "Most" of the "computer to engine" harness is separate. However, there are a number of things that seem to be on other harnesses. Those that I have found are the "Test" port, the Coil connector and the Fuel Pump.
2. Off the main "computer to engine" harness are a green and a gray connector each with 8 - pins. Do these feed to the mentioned items above?
3. It appears the inertia switch is "in-line" to powering the fuel pump rather than "reporting back" to the computer for shut off. Is that correct? Also, is the fuel pump triggered off a relay or just the computer?
4. I have converted a C-4 to a 5 speed. Is there any necessary wiring regarding the clutch safety switch, 5 - speed feeds to the computer (if any)?
5. I'm retaining the Turbo Coupe alternator, the electric fan controls, the "regular - premium" switch, and need any associated connections for them.
Frankly, once sorted out it doesn't seem too difficult to do. I have wired up TV Studio's for years and am familiar with such tasks. That said, any advice to using the T/C harness would be appreciated so I may apply the experience of others who have gone before me. Especially regarding what wires HAVE to be cut and what wires DON'T.
Thanks for any input, Tom
Man I was in you shoes before..the last two swaps I did was 88 TC harnesses it wasn't that complex. I got the diagrams from Turboford.org. Printed them out and traced them with colored markers. engine to fuel pump on my ranger. They had most of the info available.
I wish you the best of luck
FrankBoss
how was the swap, im think about getting a bobcat wagon and a tc bird and swaping the motor and trans, so basically what u are about to finish. any input you have for me would be great like if it was worth it or just go with a v8 thanks best of luck , cause man those turbo pintos on youtube are bad @ss!!!!
i used the 88 harness in mine and i regret it. then again i didnt want all the stuff your adding. if i could do it again, id use a harness out of a 4 banger mustang. xr4tis had some fire issues i guess.
2. i think the connector your talking about has the fuel pump for sure. it should be pink or pink with a black stripe. i think there was something with the coil too but im not for sure, if it is i think its green with a yellow stripe.
3. yes and yes. the fuel pump triggered on with the computer and the relay is in the ircm.
4. youll need the clutch switch for your cruise or you can bypass it. i think the switch does something with the idle too but i dont remember for sure. i got rid of mine and have no issues.
5. ditch the tc alternator and go with a 3g out of a 95 mustang v8. 130amps. why reuse the premium switch? i spliced it to always be in premium mode. if you do reuse it, its only a switch and a relay pretty much
as far as what can and cant be cut depends on what your doing with the car. best is to get the diagram and look at what you will and will not be using. get the diagram for the eeciv, starting, charging, underhood and ignition. you can see what needs to be spliced into your pinto harness, what you do need and what you dont need. if you need diagrams i MAY beable to print them and scan them for you. thats IF my printer decides to work.

The relay for the fuel pump is in the same "box" as the relays for your electric fans, pink wire is correct. If you've cut that wire going in, a simple bosh relay is all that's needed being triggered to turn on by the computer. That's how I ran mine eliminating the relay box.The cut off goes inline to the pump and just cuts power when tapped to hard or when the car is hit. Sometimes I'll tap mine off for a cheap anti theft device.
Thanks everyone for your replies.
bbobcat75: Sorry, time is limited to reply, but I suggest searching this site under "turbo" and a TON of stuff is available! Bill, (77turbopinto) has gone to great lengths to post a significant amount of detailed turbo Pinto information. There are others as well. Most of my posts "wittsend" are related to the turbo project as well.
Frank, I went to Turboford.ORG and it came up as Turboford.NET. I assume it is the same site??? I looked around there and at the Rangerstation and couldn't find the schematic for the '88 Turbo Coupe wire harness. Perhaps they pulled it down? I myself recall some site (such as you linked me to) that had it posted, but now that I need it... :'(
If anyone has a link to an '88 Turbo Coupe wire diagram it would be much appreciated. And again, thanks for any input. Long or short, it all helps put the pieces of the puzzle together.
Thanks, Tom

xr4tis had some fire issues i guess.
Now I find this out, after I get one wired into Wee Beastie!
Will try to figure out why the ignition won't spark and the fuel pump won't pump after dinner today.
This site has a wiring diagram for the 1988 T-Bird plus some other useful info.

I do not see any on ebay at the moment but if you can locate a EVTM like this but for the 1988 T-Bird, it will make life a lot easier.

This link is to a very generic multi-year wiring diagram that should get you in the ball park.

Before finding an EVTM for the 87 T-Bird that I disassembled, I made a wire connection list in exel. Not sure if there are any wiring differences between the 87 and 88. If you want a copy, I can email it to you if you provide a email address.

This may be something worth making downloadable off the site. Maybe the admins can chime in?
here you go. i printed and scanned them. if you cant read them or they wont print, i could send them to you in the mail.

Hey, thanks everyone for all the input, links, postings etc.. Turbo74Pinto I was able to get to your diagrams, but they were hard to read. Is it possible to re-scan them at a higher rate?
I did a lot of wire tracings and with the '88 T/C harness it's like separating conjoined twins! However, I did get the Computer, Alternator, Coil, Wiper Control, Dash and a few other things sorted out.
Which, by the way, amongst using the T/C steering column, alternator and wiper control, I also intend to attempt to configure the T/C dash (Speedo - Tach) into the Pinto bezel and use an ESS gauge pod for the other gauges. I guess I know no limits to torturing myself! :lost:
Tom
did you try printing it? i dont know if that would help. i think my scanner is set on the highest setting. like i said befor, if need be, ill mail them to you. let me know

Just to let you know, a 88 T-bird EVTM has shown up on ebay for a reasonable price if you are interested. I do not know this vendor.

Hey, Thanks Old Kayaker. Hopefully I'll get this one (cheap). With my T/C steering column and the wiper and cruise control I'm in greater need than most of the diagrams I was able to find provided
Tom.
