Title: starting circuit in 2.3 liter, 1980 pinto
Post by: jimhammann on October 04, 2008, 05:15:02 PM
I have a 1980 2.3 liter engine pinto that is having trouble starting.  When it fails to start, and you release the key and turn it to off, it seems as if it want to start.  Is there some type of relay system? in the start/run process?  Help!

IF your car has never been messed with I am willing to bet you have a issue with the ignition switch.

Could be adjusted wrong, have come loose from its mounts, have a loose connection, or could be pulling apart.

There is a cut off to all power BUT the igintion and starter relay when the key is turned to "START". When you release and it goes to "RUN", it feeds power to the igintion from a different source in the switch. If the switch is worn or bad, it will not make the contact on the "START" or the "RUN" power feed or both, and sometimes it just makes contact when you are turning the key to "OFF". I have had a few like that, and two T-Bird T/Cs as well. The T/Cs just needed a zip-tie on the switch.

Welcome.

When you say it won't start, do you mean it won't crank at all, or it cranks normaly but won't fire and then tries to kick over when you let off the key? If it is a no crank, I agree w/ 77turbo. If it is a crank w/ no fire, you need an ignition module.

The ones I talked about did crank. They all seemed to 'catch' for a second as the key was released.

I agree with 71PR about the IM.

The ignition system has a by pass circuit that only works while the key is in the start position.  It allows the motor to start on a true 12 V when the engine is running the voltage to the coil is only 7.5 if I remember correctly.
The voltage is reduced with a resistor wire to the coil.
If your running circuit fails you can start the car but it will quit when the keys released.

This could be you problem honestly.
I would have the Module tested and check voltage from the switch.

Best of Luck
