Title: Disdabling deceleration valve and vacuum retard on 71 2.0 motor
Post by: Reed on October 02, 2008, 02:39:52 PM
Hey gang.  I havre been driving my 71 Pinto more lately and i am not happy with the performance and gas mileage it is getting.  Mileage seems to be about 20-25 MPG mixed highway/city driving, and it seems to have a lag on acceleration.

Right now the motor is bone stock.  I would like to disable the deceleration valve and the vacuum retard on the distributor.  Can i just disconnect the hose going to the vacuum retard pod on the dist?  How do I remove/disable the deceleration valve?

Thanks!

take the 'decel' (deceleration valve) valve off at the intake manifold, tap the hole into the decel valve to (IIRC) 3/8 pipe insert a socket head (allen head) plug flush and reinstall the decel valve.  eliminates a potential vacuum leak and helps the engine rpm settle back down to idle after acceleration and between shifts

Take the valve off put a penny under the valve bolt it back together, it's fixed..

Hey, thanks!  How about the vacuum retard on the distributor?  If I just disconnect it from the diaphragm and plug the line will the vacuum advancecome in too quickly?

IIRC the retard side was for emission control, it won't affect the advance side. Take the hose off and put a BB or a ball bearing in it and hook it back up.

Thanks!  I will disconnect it and cap the fitting on the intake with a nipple, but use the fitting later for a vacuum guage.   ;D

Hey Reed,

Do you have the vacuum hooked to manifold or ported. It makes a difference because the ported has 0 in/hg at idle or cruise. It only has vac under acceleration. I talked to apintonut tonight and I guess my cutting party is off. You can still come over if you want, find out where I live and what I've got.

Thanks for the invite but I am slammed with work this weekend.  I won't be able to make it out.

The vacuum advance pod is hooked to a ported source on the carb but the vacuum retard pod is hooked straight to manifold vacuum.  I haven't had much time to investigate it, but I want to get out there and pot the timing curve and see exactly at what vacuum the advance pod kicks in and also how fast it advances.  I am worried that if i just disconnect the retard pod the advance pod will come in too early and too fast.  But I need to go out and actually test it.

Thanks!
