She's back up and running. For the most part anyway. I have an oil leak that I haven't found yet, and my radiator is pushing coolant out like crazy. Haven't figured that one out yet either. But other than that she's running great! And for some reason my electric choke is always hot. So today I just made sure I disconnected it when I got out of the car and put it back before I left to go anywhere. Steve, thank you again for the help. I'll have to find a way to make it up to you.
that was quick. good job.!!!!! glad to help, sounds like yall been busy..... let me know how its runnin when you get the small stuff figured out.
Where is your radiator spraying coolant?
I was puzzled when my coolant was spraying all over my hood when I first got the car running. It turns out it was the thermostat housing. Inside the housing there is a tiny groove which the thermostat sits in. The groove was so corroded that, even after tightening down completely, there was just enough space between the housing, the gasket, and the head, that it leaked badly.
I'm thinking its coming from the blow out valve at the bottom. I don't know what it's really called. Enough of it came out earlier today that I thought I had blown a hose or cracked my radiator. It's back in the garage now with a bowl under it to see how much comes out between now and tomorrow morning. Replacing my radiator probably wouldn't be a bad idea either way, I'm just running out of money at the moment. And I think I traced my oil leak to the cam cover. I've been playing with the idea of putting in a manual choke and making a reservoir for my radiator.
They all seem to leak oil from the cam cover (eventually) I had to replace the thermostat housing on mine too because of corrosion. I tried the cheap manual choke kit from Autozone, but its really hard to set up the bracket right, I gave up and put the electric choke back on, but the plastic linkage was really sloppy. First the choke got stuck closed, had a top speed of 17 mph. then got the choke open and the linkage bound with the throttle and the throttle got stuck open, now the choke lives in the trunk and the butterfly is held open by a piece of wire tied to the throttle cable bracket, have to fix that before winter, but all the cars in junkyard here are v-6 with different carb or have water choke. Anybody selling carb or parts for 77-78?
I just junked a 77 wagon and tried my hardest to get the carb off. I only had a socket set with me and needed an open end wrench to get the stinking thing off. Rather than fighting it, I left it alone. Sorry guys :-\

Re. Radiator pushing fluid out,,,,,,,,
Consider that your over filling it ? ? ? ? ?
Check it again (after its sat over night) so long as you can see fluid, don't add any, drive it a short distance. If it doesn't push out any fluid, there your answer, you over filled it ! ! ! !
The system was designed to work WITHOUT "an overflow" and should.
There are several things that will cause your problem. Most common is the over filling. If you not over heating, most of the others are not involved. The only thing left (besides over filling ) is that the radiator cap is bad (wont hold pressure)
If........you not over heating,,,,,,,and your not over filling..........replace the cap ! ! !
However,,,,,depending on the radiator age and condition,,,,,,consider going down a few pounds on the pressure,,,,,,,maybe down to about 7 pounds
Let us know what you discover,,,,,,,,Jim at jimspinto
about getting the carb off. I had to slightly bend a 7/16 wrench to get mine off. I couldn't get to the bolts without modifying it. sorry to hear about you junking a car

Not to get too far off topic but dont feel bad about me junking a wagon. When I crawled in the back to take out the pop-out windows, I almost fell through the floor ;D. Plus there were ladybugs living behind the timing belt cover. Yeah, this car was gone. But I saved a lot of good parts so it will still live on
Good luck with getting yours running. It's amost time to put mine in storage (one more month)
If your valve cover gasket is leaking, I highly recommend one of the rubber gaskets as a replacement. That way if you ever have to remove the valve cover for inspection, you don't have to replace it again.
I have a rubber one on mine with the metal inserts in the screw holes which keep you from mashing the gasket too much.
I have had to remove my valve cover 3-4 times since I put it on and it has never leaked.
Here is the part's america link:

It is a little more expensive, but I feel that it is well worth it.
Thanks for the advice, just checked out the link. $27.99 is a little expensive, but worth it if it lasts more than a couple years, I got a cork one from Pep Boys about 5 years ago and leaks a little again, its only been about 12,000 miles
Yeah, I've had it on my car for about three years now, about 10,000 miles on the new motor and no problems to speak of it so far!
I haven't had time to mess with the oil leak yet, but it's not leaking much, so its not #1 on my list. My radiator cap IS bad, and I have a new one, but the guy at O'reilys looked it up in the system and gave me one thats 16lbs. Seemed a little high to me, so it's in my backseat. BUT the one that's on it now is 15lbs and my book says it should be 13. So I don't know whats right. Anyone have any ideas for me about my choke? Having to disconnect/reconnect it all the time is getting old.
how handy are you with electricity? if you cant start digging through the wiring harness to see where a hot wire is making contact with it you may need to run a new wire to it from elsewhere, don't forget to put a fuse inline and don't simply push a new wire under an existing fuse. You can get an electrical tester from almost any auto parts store for $10 or less and simply start looking for something else that only has power when the ignition is on. any other of you guys know what the amp draw is for the electric choke?
I'm ok with electrical work. It makes me nervous though and then my hands sweat and I usually end up shocking myself. I'm special that way. So it makes me inclined to want to disconnect the battery. But then I wouldn't be able to find my problem. However, I'm thinking I may just run a new wire all together and discard the original. My entire car really needs to be rewired. But I'm not up for that just yet. I have a problem with one of my blinkers too.
If you're not using the winshield washer circuit (most have burned out pumps or cracks in the tank) that may be your closest place to borrow electricity from. All you need is a circuit thats off when the ignition is off and on when the ignition is on. I have a Haynes Automotive Electrical manual that, while not specific to the Pinto, has a lot of useful information, I think you can get one at Pep Boys, or if not then maybe Amazon.com. Good luck and if theres anything I can do to help, you can pm me, and I'll check back here when I can. As far as the turn signal issues, what's going on? Bulb on without blinking? Blinking too fast? Not working at all? The sockets go bad and I had to replace both my front ones. If its blinking too fast and your bulbs are working, or they aren't blinking at all, you need a new flasher, Its under the dash near the steering column, and you can get one at any parts store usually for less than $5.00
so whats the latest on the wagon? you back on the road again?
It has to be up..... I saw her on the road last night.
The guy behind me pulled up next to me at the next light and asked me the odds of seeing 2 pinto wagons on the same road at the same time ;D
about the same as seeing 3 of them pull into the same resturaunt for breakfast in aiken sc............. :D
Exactly what I was thinking!
Jess had bruises for 4 days from Curtis' roll cage. He needs a passenger harness and she needs to learn to climb over door bars. You get the pistons?
yeah, they look great!!! its kinda funny though, all my shiney pieces are going to be on the inside of the engine!!!!! :D
Word- Car's running. I try not to utter those words too much. That's usually when something goes wrong. I'm about to try putting in a new radio here directly. It's my birthday present to myself. Priest- you're about to see me walking through the door of your work soon. I see you're car around pretty often, but never when you're actually in it. I'm about to come say "hi".
glad to see its still cruizing around. motor still doin fine? or is it the little stuff youve been having issues with?
Motor is wonderful. I couldn't ask for a better one. It's little things. But instead of one little thing at a time, I'll end up with 10 of them at once.
