I've got a 1977 Pinto, who do I change the ignition switch : Where should I go to read how to complete this task?
your local parts store will have a book on your pinto, Should show you how to take it apart and install a new Switch. or you can go to Autozone.com and look in their Reference stuff to see if they have anything there.
Are you talking about the key & cylinder of the electrical part?
1.This switch is of the blade connector type and incorporates a push button on the steering column which must be depressed before the ignition key can be withdrawn from the lock. 2. The ignition switch is located on the upper side of the steering column under the shroud, and is operated by a rod connected to the key actuated lock cylinder. 3.To remove the switch first remove the shrouding from the steering column. 4.Disconnect the battery ground terminal. 5.Pull apart the multi plug eletrical connector 6.Remove the bolts securing the steering column to the brake support bracket. 7.Remove the two screws securing the ignition switch to the steering column, and lift the switch vertically upwards to disconnect it from the actuateing rod. 8.new replacement switches are supplied pinned in the Lock position by a plastic pin inserted in a locking hole on the top of the switch. 9.Postion the hole in the end of the switch up to the hole in the actuator, and install the connecting pin. 10.Before refitting a switch in order to hold the mechanical parts of the column in the LOCK position, move the selector lever to PARK auto matic manual use reverse turn the key to the LOCK position and remove the key 11.Check that the switch its self is in the LOCK position
12.Position the switch on the column and replace the retaining nuts
13.Move the switch up and down along the column to locate the mid position of the actuator rod movement Tighten the two retaining nuts
14.Remove the plastic locking pin , reconnect the multiplug and battery and check for the correct starting in park and neutral
15.Refit the column shrouds and supports bracket useing the reverse procedure..
