I will dropping my transmission for some work on it later today and will most likely have to do it by myself.
I have access to two floor jacks and several pneumatic tools.
What will be the easiest way to drop the transmission by myself, as well as the easiest way to put it back in straight?
I'm not worried about how long it will take, I'm sure it will take a good chunk of time. I just need to get this chirping sound figured out as it is driving me insane!
I usually do them myself as well. The car needs to be up as high as you can get it. I usually drain the fluid to make it a little lighter. 4spds are not as heavy as the C3. Anyway, I leave the cross member in till everything is loose. Depending on how heavy the transmission is, I usually muscle it out or use a floor jack and a piece of wood to pull and drop it down. Make sure you have a clutch alignment tool if you end up pulling the pressure plate.
Check your throwout bearing closely. I imagine that is the source of your chirping sound.

Well I didn't get the chance to do anything on the car today, dad had me help him out with getting the back porch partially shingled before rain started.
I will try to get at it tomorrow after work, we shall see.
If you know somebody with a motoecycle lift, borrow that, works reat well to get a tranny out and back in
Harbor freight sells a great transmission jack (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=39178) and a adapter for your floor jack for transmissions (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=39152) . I got the transmission jack on sale for $50. I highly recommend it.
Just a small addition to the above. With the bellhousing bolts (and other auxiliaries) removed, the transmission rear is lowered. Wedge a wood block under the front of the engine to prevent it from trying to tilt back to level when the transmission is removed. This also helps with re-installation also.
