Title: Startup After Storage
Post by: jkingdogg on August 17, 2004, 03:51:12 PM
Hello fellow Pinto owners/lovers:
I am is need of information for the safe startup of my 1980 Pinto Pony that has been stored for the last past 9 years, in a garage. It was driven to the garage in 1995.
I remember seeing somewhere that I should change the oil and filter, remove the spark-plugs and place a few drops of motor oil in the spark-plug holes, and then "turn engine over" a few times to coat the cylinder walls, replace plugs and then "fire" engine up.
This car was also parked with a full tank of gas. Should I remove and replace the old gas befor startup?
Thank you to all for your help and for your time,
                                            Jkingdogg@aol.com

Yes. Don't forget putting in a new battery, changing the coolant, and replacing the thermostat. I would suggest using Marvel Mystery Oil for the top-cylinder oiling (through the plug holes). I would also recommend substituting a quart of regular motor oil with a quart of Mystery Oil for the first 500 miles after resucitating the vehicle. After 500 miles, change the oil and again use a quart of Mystery Oil with regular oil. After another 500 miles, change the oil once more and use normal oil changing procedures thereafter.

QuoteThis car was also parked with a full tank of gas. Should I remove and replace the old gas before startup?

Yes. I think the realistic lifespan of stored gas is something like 6 months. I doubt the liquid in the tank will have the octane needed to power the engine.

you'll be lucky if it runs at all, the gas will turn to a jelly sitting that long in the carb and fuel lines.

yes definitely dump the gas. It will run like crap if at all and would cover up other hidden problems.
Pull the plugs and turn the engine over by hand, change the oil before fireup.
Yank the top of the carb and check float, needle, bowl etc. new fuel filter a must and change after a few hours of running.
Your fuel pump will probably be toast but they don't cost much.

Good luck !

mine sat for 12 years, and the person who started it, just jumped in and started it, worst thing ever....

over the years ive had to replace the gas tank because it was so rusted and kept plugging fuel filters, replace the fuel pump because the rubber diaphram in it disintigrated, and rebuilt the engine as it was burning oil, the block was a corded mess of crap and rust, the anitfreeze must of had a good wack of water in it.  all of this was a direct result of it being parked, and only 35000mi on it... i have since put on 100000mi onto it...  :D

I would make sure that not only is the gas changed but that you FLUSH the radiator and the oil in that car.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A NEW BIG VOLTS BATTERY TO START IT ,BECAUSE YOU WILL BE DOING ALOT OF CRANKING. MINE IS YET TO BE STARTED AFTER 13 years of sitting. I will retrieve it and start mine soon. Chevy
