Title: Early Pinto Sway Bars
Post by: TIGGER on August 23, 2008, 07:02:15 PM
Are the 71-73 Pinto front sway bars different than the 74 and up cars?  What about the brackets?  They look the same but without removing the front bar from my 72 I do not know for sure.  Has anyone swapped a later wagon bar onto an early car?

i used an Interpart 1 1/16" bar on the front of mine back in '71.  i don't think they are in business anymore.

try aadco (spelling?) or any of the high perf suspension companies that advertise in Car & Driver, Road & Track or Autoweek.  There are bound to be more than 1 outfits out there that may be able to help you out

try these guys with questions you may have.  they may be able to help:

My 73 does not have a front sway bar but my 72 beater does.  I also have a wagon sway bar that came with a bunch of parts.  I will pull the one off the 72 for the 73 if it is different.  If not I plan on using the wagon bar.

Is the wagon bar thicker than the one that comes on runabouts and sedans?

Yes it is but I do not remember the size off the top of my head.  I believe it is a 1" or an 1 1/8" bar.

I know the thread was based on ability to make that conversion,.. I hope it works,.. it sounds like a nice inexpensive way to increase handling.

My stock '73 wagon front sway bar measures approx. .80+ (my eyes are too far gone to read an "old school" caliper very accurate). I assume it was intended to be 7/8" bar???

As to the second part of your question, sorry, I don't a '74 up car to compare it to.

My friend and I measured the difference a few weeks ago. Compared my 72 to his 75. The mounting points on the newer car were farther apart. I cant remember exactly but an inch or a little more. Mine came with no bar :(

Which mouting points are you referring to?  The frame or at the control arms?

ok my sway bar in the front is 1 and 1/8th from the mustang king cobra, but as far as i can tell you might be able to use one.
