Title: Hot VAM! It's finally installed.
Post by: Wittsend on August 16, 2008, 10:13:45 PM
After much contemplation, the limiting dimensions of the '73 Wagon pretty much dictated putting the VAM in the wheel well.  It is such a relief to, "stop thinking and start doing." This have been at the forefront of my mind for way too long.

Pic #1 -  I welded up this strange bracket to securely hold the VAM and the stock aircleaner below it. Two of the arms are cut off the original VAM mount. The other two are from the T/C steering column and an ABS sensor holder supports the air cleaner.  It looks strange, but it holds everything very securely.

Pic #2 VAM and mount to illustrate what it is going to hold.

Pic #3  Is the VAM installed in the wheel well.  I retained the aircleaner intake (plastic piece) to get the air from the front, rather than mud slung off the tire.  I had to notch the bumper bracket (not seen) to allow air to the opening.

Pic #4 This is the view from the engine compartment.

I'm likening putting a 2.3 Intercooled turbo in a pre-'74 Pinto to working a Rubik's Cube.  Your always moving something to account for something else.  Still I'm having fun - most of the time.

Nice work,  I dont know what a "VAM" is, but its a clean install. Did you split vacuum tubing to line the "cutout" for the big air tube going through the fender well?

Yes, that is exactly what I did (split vacuum) line.  Basically I wedged the line ( I bought 4 ft. of it) in a sidewalk joint to hold it straight and stable. I then used a level and a standard razor knife.  Not only did it come out straight, but I didn't cut myself either (I'm prone to that).

I recommend you start the line in a sharp corner. Also put a small slit in the opposite  start side so it meets the same depth once you run it around and it meets up.  I didn't do it here, but you could also grind an internal curve in at the end to make it look even better.

Ok I'll bite, which does what,.. meter vane air?
Is it like a mass air flow sensor?
