In most copyrights, the issue centers around copying an item and then making profit from it yourself. Likewise, most copyrights >allow< an owner of an item to make a copy for themselves without any fear of retribution - think software, as an example.

An additional point; copyrights for certain things have a "shelf life", that is, after a period of about 20 years, unless a copyright is renewed, the item in question becomes public domain. This however does NOT apply towards "licensed" items, such as logos and certain artwork. It is doubtful, therefore, that anything encompassing the PINTO script/pony could be reproduced, since it represents a very recognizeable and long-standing insignia.

Where doubts exist, the answer could only best be determined through the legal domains of the companies themselves. For YOUR sake, if you plan to copy it for yourself, you >probably< would be safe.

DISCLAIMER: I am in no way a legal expert and/or am in no way authorized to support and/or break claims regarding copyright law. My inexperience and comments are based on dealing with reproduction pinball machine parts and artwork (for games that are 20+ years old) over the last ten years, which in parallel represents a similar set of variables.

Thankyou Popbumper for the insight :::i wanted to copy these for the members, or get frank to take a look at it .The graphic`s place gave me the same story but i thought it would be ok. because of the age and the company that made them is long gone... oh and they will make two for me so i will have one spare for sale i guess ,and the art work is 100 dollars CDN plus the cost of material.... it hurts paying for the work, and then only getting two....i know what i can do I`LL get the art work when they are done and go to another place and say make me two and so on and so on and so on .... ha ha ha ha.  Also I`d like to say I just wanted to share them within the group for our cars at cost....

How big is that vynl?

That should be NOWHERE near $100.

I have a vynl sticker guy near me that does that stuff.  We'd just need a hi-res photo.

So, it is supposed to go in the rear window?

I can see what something like that will set me back.

My current vynl sticker from him has lasted 3 hard seasons outside and still looks good.
My old vynl stickers from another vendor only lasted ~2.5 before they started peeling on the edges.  I'd hate to spend $100 for something that has no performance benefit and wears out that easily (compared to the tri-color stripes on the CW, which lasted until I took a die grinder to them - almost 30 years later).

thats a easy size since most cutters are 15 inch wide or bigger..
But yah that could be done real easy....Vinyl is rate by out life We only purchase 5 year vinyl..which is some the higher end stuff...thats based on 5 years in the dirrect sun and rain so it should last longer,

At that price it must be a big chain sign shop taking your money...you should try PintoWorks!

That is a much more reasonable price.  Add another dollar or two for a shipping tube...

As for an art fee... bah!  If the customer provides a hi-res image you wouldn't have to do much at all (at least on the software I helped install at my guy's).   ;)

I was sooo close to buying a 48" vynl machine along with a few thousand feet of assorted colored vynl.   :(  Local tuner shop went out of business and was selling everything.

See Starsky, ya just have to ask around.  We have a vast resource of people here.  :)

you say "bah" but I deal with people every day that don't have a clue what a hi res file is...they just copy things off the enternet and think its good...
I earn my art fees...auto trace and auto separation programs are for rookies at the best... So don't be hard on those that do charge art fee's...

Dont you guys need vector files that can be enlarged or shrunk to whatever size without becoming pixelated or blurry?

Smeed ..your right as well but we have to trace peoples high res pics to make vector files all the time...customers mean well but they create alot extra steps to the simplest jobs...
