First let me point out this is not an exact science , more detailed information is available in specialty books for decoding FOMOCO engineering numbers. If you get really lucky look under the coil mounting bolt you'll find a tag with a wealth of information ( engine c.i.d - model year-change level-month and year of engine production). Unfortunately FOMOCO never actually recorded serial numbers on their engines. They did however stamp their engines with engineering numbers which can usually get you into the ballpark for year and intended model the engine was built for. The engineering number for example looks like this C5AE-6015-E ,( located at the right rear of the block ) would indicate a 1965 (A=1940's B=1950's C=1960's etc. next number indicates actual year of the decade) So we have a 1965 engine. 3rd digit is an "A" meaning it was for a Full-size Ford. 4th digit should always be an "E" for engine division. Next number is referred to as the BASIC ( 6015=block , 6090=cylinder heads many more you get the idea ) Last digit is the design level (A as designed B first change to design and so on ). This is intended to be a guide not the gospel. Engine size is usually located between the lifter galleries. Hope this helps.
