Title: Transmission..
Post by: 79Minto on August 10, 2004, 06:58:06 PM
So now comes the time when I need a transmission for my Pinto.. I've got the 302 rebuilt, Soooo. I'm looking for a C4.. What are the odds of a 1982 Capri with an Inline Six having a C4? And would a C4 from a '75 Torino work??

I don't know that much about automatics, but I think you will need different bell housing for the 302 than the inline 6. I've heard people talk about a small c4 bell housing from the m2, but I don't know much about it. The Torino is a big car and I would guess it has a big bell housing that may take some work to fit in the pinto tunnel.
Just my thoughts, maybe someone else will have more/better advice.

The Bell should bolt onto any C4

The bellhousing will bolt to a c4, but will it bolt to the block?

The one from the 6 probly won't. But, if the Mustang II bell is from a 302 car, he can swap that onto any C4, and he's good to go.  If I'm wrong someone will tell me.  ;) :)

Bill

Edit:  The trans. should be from a V8 car.

The turboford website is loaded with information about the C4 on cars including the Pinto; as well as links to more sites that teach about C4s and bellhousings and case fill vs. pan fill, etc.  Use the search function there to find all the posts going back 4+ years.  It's not more info than you need; it's just right.

Also, you didn't post the details on your car; I assume you've at least the 8" rear axle in it?

And I believe it's Brad (could be wrong) who has a post on this pinto.com site about track bars with pics; and I'm sure it is he that has info on the 8" vs. 6-3/4".  Look in the FAQs.

"frame connectors and track bars" a bit further down on the list of posts in this forum.  It pays to look around a bit before posting.   ::)

Ok I've already got a Posi 8"  and traction bars hooked up.... I didn't know if a C4 out of a bigger car would have a differen't tailstock length.

what kind of Ford vehicle did the 302 come out of and what year?    ford has made many changes to the c4 transmissions over the years, such as a c4 out of a 5.0 mustang isn't the same as a c4 out of a '74 torino. if you got the transmission out of the same car as the 302, all you have to do is track down another doner car and slap it in there.  i would recomend rebuilding it first. and its the same deal with a diffrent car. its not rocket science. and im gald if this helps.
