Title: Where do you guys with hatchbacks put speakers?
Post by: russosborne on August 11, 2008, 12:51:49 AM
I currently have a cheap box with two speakers that I bought at WalMart that will be sitting on the back seat when I get the radio installed. But I would like something a bit more permanent.
So where do you guys mount your speakers? Kick panels seem awfully small to me. Never really liked door mounted speakers, at least not for the main set.
One thought I have had is to make an upper console, only have it run side to side and sit above the rear seat, and just be deep enough for the speakers to sit in facing down. But that might be more involved than I am looking for. I know I have seen similar things for sale in the past, but I don't know if they are still sold, and even if they are money is always an issue.
Thanks,
Russ

Since mine is for 'personal' use (i.e. not the family car!), I pulled my rear seat.  I'm going to build custom boxes to fit in the seat wells and the tops will be about 10" over the rear floor.  That way, I can still bring home groceries and not have them slide into the front on a stop...  The box (will end up being one unit) will support two 12" Kickers and some mid-range speakers.

That is something I am thinking about also. My family consists of me, wife, and two dogs. Wife won't ride in Pinto, at least not yet.
Are you going to remove the entire seat back including the metal fold down part? I was thinking of maybe attaching a box to that, so that it could be folded down in an emergency.
I don't know, the rate I am going I won't even have the radio installed this month. If I wasn't paying for XM radio, I probably wouldn't be worried about it.
Thanks,
Russ

Is it possible to cut out the market light access holes a little bigger and mount speakers in there? At least you would get the big resonance volume of the rear fender area.

Russ:

Your line "Wife won't ride in Pinto, at least not yet", is EXACTLY how my wife feels. I'm in touch with that!!

i myself used ranger covers from a 94 ranger rear speakers used thin speakers ( yes they make real thin ones now in 5x7 and mounted em low behind in passenger area right under the arm rest ( if ya wanna call it a arm rest ) so the height challenged persons ( nobody under 5ft can fit in rear seats without cramping em and learning from a yogi master how to contort ) they sound OK  I'm not too much into sound . i have door speakers and the 2 in back just help, but however they fit fine without alot of hacking and almost look stock...or ya build a box cover it vinyal or carpet it to match interior color find a EXP that'll donate its rear cargo cover mount all the hardware to hide everything and with back seat up or down all they see is a cargo cover not an expensive set of speakers to be plucked out by dropping a brick thru rear glass and running ( Go try to find a rear glass for a hatchback with defrost that works ...good luck)

That EXP cargo cover is a good idea.  My 87 Mustang has something similar, but since I haul a bunch of crap in it (I use it like a truck), I have the roll up cargo cover sitting on a shelf in the garage for now.  My stang's is removable, and has clips on either side attached to the side panels that the cover slides into.  It then has two hooks on the end that hook into the taillight access cover pieces.

More on target of the OP, I put 6.5" round 3ways in the side marker cover plate holes on the 79 hatch, since the plates were missing anyway.
