Title: What are the Hood Vents for?
Post by: Kid Colt II on August 10, 2008, 11:59:06 PM
I noticed that when I look down in mine, it's filled up with dead pine tree needles. Haven't figured out how to get in there yet to clean it out.

Since it doesn't seem to vent to the engine bay, is it for the Air Conditioner?

Those vents are the drainage for water off the windshield. They also server as fresh air intakes for your vents when you pull that rod out under the dash.

If there is a lot of pine needles and leaves in it, you need to clean it out before it become too clogged up and water stops draining out the sides of it under the fenders. Don't be to suprised if there is rust under it all though, pretty much everyone has had to deal with it!

The most common way I have heard of cleaning them out is through the hood hinges. I was lucky enough not to have any serious build up, and what I did have sprayed out after about 30 minutes of shooting water through the vents towards the sides. I did however end up pulling the fenders out slightly so I could ensure that the drainage ports were clear of debris.

Do a search on "cowl rust", "cowl clean", or "cowl" and get the whole low down, dirty story on what kind of issues a good number of us have to fight regarding these vents. Mine were stuffed with dried leaves; when I got around to pulling the hood and driver's fender off, what I found was some ugly rust. Check and clean them carefully.

Hey Kid Colt II,
Did you take your engine out???

Oh, no. Sorry, that was just a pic from the user gallery. I was trying to find a good reference pic for the "cowl".

I would leave the pine needles in, they will give a nice smell when you open your vent.
