Did the shifter come out of the transmission? It sounds like the retaining ring unscrewed itself from the transmission or broke and the shifter popped out of it's seat.

Tony I know I talked a while back about 1600 clutch 1 having 20 and another having about 22. I dont know what route to take because I have so many parts. I have new 2.3 clutch assy. in box with flywheel, I have 1600 clutch or do I need to pull the square tire 74 wagon in hangar and pull what a hassle. So I guess I am trying to look for easiest way out, small disc I dont care I am not going to races, I mean hey I turned street corner shifting into 3rd, I putt in this car its my auto parts picker upper car. Reply thanks Fred.   ???

So if he goes about fixing it, and the trans is worn, how will it stop it from happening again?

I prefer not to use that trans, when I got the car the trans was almost empty of gear oil + it falls out of reverse if I dont hold + it has 196,000 mi. on it so I was maybe thinking of trash can. The 1600 disc has 7/8" coverage on both sides of the 2.3 press. plate. The wagon has 160,000 mi. on it. decisions decisions oh my what to do. More input thanks Fred.  ??? :)

While we are on the topic of transmission problems...

Why might it sound like something is rattling around inside my transmission when I am just engaging the clutch while in reverse?

This was my repair, 2.3 bell will not bolt to 1.6 trans. 1.6 bell bolted to 2.3 after taking lower block bushing holes in 1.6 bell out to 5/8" and in 1/2". I instaled a resurfaced flywheel 2.3 old 1 missing teeth. Used the 1.6 smaller clutch dia. and the 2.3 press. plate. Changed drive shaft to smaller yoke dia.. Test drove all gears good and could not get clutch to slip so yea. Fred

Or you could have used stepped dowels.

Did you drill them out with a hand held drill?
