hello group has anyone used the new 134a retrofitand charging kit on their pinto vintage ac system? any probelms or concerns?old style Freon is really hard to buy in ca and expensive/ you also need a mechanics license just to buy it. i have a 77 wagon 2.3 dealer installed ac unit and thought it might be the way to go.so any ideas ? thanks chris in ca.
Chris not a problem works fine. I have 134 in my 74 and its chuken ice cubes. I am running propane in my metro because I ran out of 134. I will check and see if I have any extra 134 adapters I can give you. Fred :)
They say you need to upgrade and replace several things but I've just changed the driers, installed the fittings, added synthetic oil and recharged with no problems to date. I've done about a dozen shade tree mechanic jobs so far.
Chris I have 4ea. low side adapters. Out of hi side. Cheapracer I dont change anything not to say the drier isnt a good idea. I evacuate and charge using the original R-12 fittings, then I tag low side with aluminum tag saying R-134A is instaled, why because Im a real cheap guy. Fred  :)
thanks fred for the offer i think i will try one of those complete kits i saw at kragen or autozone they look like it has everything you need to do the job.i also like cheap when i can make it work. chris

Tom I need to keep up with the competition and what better way then a flamming Metro. Fred
you can go to a hvac shop and get 420a and use it. its compatible with both r12 and 134 and you dont have to change anything. cost me around 34 bucks for 3 cans. works great.
Interesting, here is another alternative:
