Title: Floor pan repair
Post by: Reed on July 21, 2008, 04:52:43 PM
I pulled the carpet in my 71 and discovered i have some small rust holes.  The rust is from the inside out and the bottom is factory undercoated.

The holes are around te body plugs in the middle of both front floor pans and in the frontmost channel on the driver's floorpan.  The rust isn't bad enough to warrant replacing the entire floor pans, but i have a question about welding n patch pieces.  It appears that the frae rails for the front end weld onto the floor pan right where I am going to be patching.  What is the best way to patch these areas without weakening the frame to unibody connection?

Thanks!

The driver look bad enough where it might be smart to go ahead and replace instead of a band-aid.

Really?  I think the passenger is actually worse.  There is a bunch of surface rust, but the passenger side definitely has more and bigger holes.

I don't suppose anyone actualy reproduces Pinto floors or will a Mustang II floor fit?

I think he is seeing the sunspot as a hole as well.

There are no commercial sources for Pinto floor pans.

REED:

My suggestion, having JUST been through this, please go back and visit my thread called "RUST LIKES TO HIDE" from a few weeks back. I had worse rust than you do, and I used POR-15 to repair all of it. Read the thread to get an idea what I did ti fix mine; this stuff is VERY good, and I have solid, dry, strong floors now without cutting or welding sheetmetal.

With rust that lite I would use a wire brush and rust converter.
fill the holes worth seam sealer or a epoxy (the little holes Big hole get welded) then sand and paint it.
the under side would be treated the same but undercoated.

I've done a little floor repair on the my Daughters car.

Thanks!  I will read those threads and go from there.  Years ago I bought a product called "Rust Bullet" for my 66 Plymouth Barracuda Formula "S" project car, but the car was too rusty to save.   :'(  I still have a bunch of the Rust Bullet, so I will give that a try.

Thanks!
