So I have noticed some noise in my differential for a little while now, and I believe it may have started when I changed my pinion oil seal not so long ago. Perhaps I collapsed the crush sleeve to much (I used the original one)?
I lifted the rear end, drained the fluid and took a look at the ring gear and pinion contact. It turns out, according to wear markings, that the toe of the wear is on the inside of the ring gear, indicating that the backlash is to little and needs to be increased. To do so, I apparently need to shift the drive pinion away from the ring gear. This is why I believe I have crushed the original crush sleeve too much.
How do I go about shifting the drive pinion away from the ring gear? Do I need to remove the original crush sleeve and install a new one and collapse it down to spec?
Would replacing the crush sleeve mean replacing my oil seal again as well?
And last but not least, where can I find crush sleeves for the Ford 6.75" rear end used in the Pinto?
Just buy a JY 8 inch out of a M2 and do the swap. Parts will be alot easier to find.

Not all Mustang IIs had the 8", and not all Pintos had the 6.75".
I do have to agree with just getting a good used axle and installing it.
Bill
I know not all had 8" rear.

You might have known that, but not everybody does.

O Gotcha!!! I through you were yelling at me.
Mustang IIs are a rarity around here and I've only ever seen two in scrap yards.
If I had money I would be able to replace the rear end in a heartbeat! However, I am in a bit of a dilemma paying for a 2007 Saturn Ion that my ex-fiance drives, which takes about 40% of my paychecks....
Different states have different laws that pertain to relationships and financial obligations with all types of "EXes". If you have not checked into these laws, you might want to; it could get you off the note, or you might be able to take possession of the car and sell it.

I can take posession of the car and sell it any time I want and she understands this. She says she will start to pay half of the car payment, but we shall see.
Bumping this thread again, it's time to do surgery to the 6 3/4 again!
I obtained a new collapsible spacer with the aid of Phil's Toys who was more than kind enough to go down to his local dealership to get it for me and send it my way!
I just purchased a dial indicator with the correct stand, as well as a replacement oil seal to replace when I pull everything out the front of the casing.
Does anyone have a manual which provides the backlash degree when reading the dial indicator from the ring gear? Following the Haynes manual, it says to measure backlash with a dial indicator with the needle on a ring gear tooth, but it does not give what the dial indicator should read.
Hi Dave I show in Motors man. 71 - 74 all are .008 to .012. Fred :)
Thanks Fred! Any ideas if the 78' is the same though? I would assume though, but online browsing shows different manuals for 78-79 6.75" integral axles.
Checked my Haynes man. 75 to 80 it showed the same clearance. Fred :)
