Title: VAM location for Turbo Pinto project
Post by: Wittsend on July 14, 2008, 05:46:18 PM
I've been looking over pictures of Turbo Pinto conversions seeking to locate my VAM.  I saw that Bill mounted his (and his wife's) in the inner fender area.  That is doable for me, but before I proceed to cut sheetmetal I was wondering if others had any optional locations that had worked for them.

For reference my Pinto is a 1973 with an '88 T/C engine and that means the big VAM. At present I was planning on keeping the stock intercooler, but am willing to listen to options.

I had hoped to keep the VAM in the engine compartment. One consideration was to use the 90 degree hose out through the radiator cradle and drop a filter somewhere near the center of the front bumper. I of course would weld in a support piece (likely a circular loop of steel) to replace the removed metal.  It seems like there is no great location and each one has its trade-offs.  I'd like to hear what others have done, - or wish they hadn't.
Thanks for any input, Tom

My Pinto is an 80 model, so I don't know if they would fit the same, but here are a couple of pics. I have gone to speed density and therefore don't use a VAM any more. When I ran it , it worked great and the intake was easy to position in front of the radiator. Hope this helps.

Yes, basically that is what I had in mind.  I assume the picture is with the speed density?  It doesn't look like my VAM.

The 1980 grill and bumper might allow for more room. But, you have a larger radius curve and the '88 T/C VAM to air clean rubber piece is a tighter 90 degree turn. So, it may be an "all things being equal" situation.  Today there are so many "hose connected air cleaners boxes" available that I could probably adapt a "washboard" style air filter from a .... .

Thanks for the fast reply.  Tom

I ran mine through the inner fender and mounted the cone air cleaner inside the fender just before the headlight almost like Bill. It works good and not to bad for maintenance.

Wrong. The pictures I posted are of the VAM and bracket from an 88 Turbo Coupe. I reworked the bracket and mounted it on the inner fender panel and ran it through the radiator support, then turned it down in front of the radiator to the cone filter. What you are seeing is the top of the bracket.

This is in my Bobcat Auto-X car.

It is the small VAM, but the big one should fit there as well. All I did was bend up the stock T/C mount bracket and drill one bolt hole in the car. There is not much room around it, the intake tube runs under the sub-frame, and my air filter is in the right fender.

Curtis,
Thank you, that does make sense.  I have been looking at my VAM (by itself) so long I forgot about the bracket. Glad you straightened me out on that.

Bill,
I assume no issues about running the VAM at "different" angles?  Any reason why you did it that way? On the Tan (now yellow) car and your wife's car I believe you cut a hole in the inne fender?

Thanks to all you guys, Tom

P.S. Somehow I misplaced my hose.  I've been walking around the house muttering, "I can't find my VAM hose!"  I keep getting dirty looks from my wife and daughter.  :-)  Tom

I am not sure what I will be doing with the car (long term), so I wanted to do the least cutting. I have had no ill effects from it current location.
