Title: 4 banger at the races
Post by: bricker4864 on August 01, 2004, 04:37:30 PM
Is anyone else running the 4 cyl at the track? I ran a best ever of 15.82 @ 84 this weekend.
Mild 2.3, 4 spd, 8" w/ 4.62 mini spool, 9" stickies.
There's been a few v8 pintos, but It's been a while since I've seen another 4 cyl.
I'm up in Oregon, Woodburn Dragstrip.

There is a guy by the name of Fred House that races in Maryland, and PA, that ran a 71 with a turbo charged 4 cyl, manual tranny, that ran 8.98's in the 1/4. Recently he pulled the drivetrain and put it in an ex-pro-stock Probe and went 8.88's with it. The BB Chebby guys used to hate seeing him pull into the pits, cause they knew he was going to put them on the trailer.  ;D

Yes there is someone else who races a 4cyl.
This is my 71 pinto. It is a legal IHRA/NHRA stock elimnator car. We use the factory carb, intake, cylinder head ( with correct volumn ) NO PORTING OR POLISHING, a Lunati stocker regrind cam, over bored to .030 with factory compression & balanced. Stock  german 4sp (either the 3.37 or the 3.98 first gear). A 9" ford rear with 6.20 ring & pinion. Welded in sub frame connectors. Cal tracs design traction bars, and 6"wide firestone slicks. Car weight is 2250. Runs U/Stock Best ET  14.95 at 90 mph. We are currently building an 88 mustang for W/Stock with the factory fuel injection.

Are you racing a 2.0 or the 2.3?
I'm very far from stock running a hilborn fuel injection system. I lost a cam at the last race, but the new cam is almost ready to go in the head, then back in the car!
The SS/CC record holder lives about an hour away from me. He's running a 2.3, but it's highly modified. I think he's in the low 12s. If you have a copy of last year's NHRA rule book, there's a picture of Jim and his white pinto under ss/cc.

As per IHRA/NHRA rules, you must use the motors that were issued for that car. Ours is the 2.0 in the Pinto & 2.3 in the mustang. We have had 2   1/8 mi national records  with the pinto in IHRA & have been running this car for 23 seasons. Its been a lot of fun. Our plans are to change the 9" which takes too much power to turn & replace it with the 8.8 which we have found 6.14 gears for it. Let me know if you want to compair more notes.

Good Racing

How can you run sub frame connectors on a 71 Pinto when theres no rear sub frame to connect to?  Rules only say that you can connect the front sub frame to the rear sub frame.  Right?

Mine are custom made and tie the front subframes to the torque boxes in the rear. If your not sure what the torque box is, that's the area where the front leaf springs attaches to.

We made our own & installed them. We cut a slot in the floor & welded them to the front frame, alone both sides of the floor pan (top & bottom) back to the torque box.
We just got home from National trial raceway in Columbus Ohio for the Ford expo race, show & swap meet. Their were several pinto's but I  think I was the lone 4cyl. Lost in he 2nd round, but we ran back to back 15.514 @ 84.10 & 84.22  & this is a stick car.

Good racing

Have you really been racing the same pinto for 23 years? I raced one in SCCA for 20 years and though I had a record. I can't beleave you can keep tranies in it with that kind of lanch. Are you useing a Pinto tranie or a V-8 top loader? Keep up the good work. I drag raced for 25 years before I started going in circles. You should try it! Lots of fun. DICK

Hi Dick; Yes I have been running this car for 23 actually it's 24 years. We started racing it just before our son was born & he will be 24 the end of Oct. Yes we do run the factory trans. However, I have blew up several of them. With the 6.20 rear gear & a heavy duty clutch, it kind of softens the shock to the trans. We use the 3.37 first gear which is out of the 74 / 75 pinto SW. We would really like to use a better trans, but IHRA & NHRA will not aprove an adapter plate.
Good racing!!!!

You da man! 24 years! wow is all I can say. I drag raced one back in 73 in NHRA Div 4, but then we had to run the stock 6 3/4 rear end. I broke everthing from the flywheel back at one time or another. 4:30 gears just didn't cut it back then. Rules are now like what AHRA ran back in the 60's. NHRA was always bad mouthing AHRA over their rules back then. Where do you buy replacement parts for your tranies? Everthing down this way has dryed up. Thanks for any help. DICK

Hi Dick;
Yeah 24yrs is a long time. But unless I find that big box of $50.00s I will keep running this car. It is like one of the family. As for the trans; I do not buy any parts for them other than gaskets & seals. I find these thru small ad papers, this web site, & if nessary, buy a whole car to get the good pieces I want & junk the rest Twice a year there is a Ford swap meet in Columbus that we go to. This trans was in the mustang II & the fairmont. There is a place in Cinn. Ohio called Green  Sales that has lot of factory parts. It too can be found on this web site.
Good racing

BILL!
How good a place is the swap meet at Columbus? I've been planing to go for years. Which is the best, fall or spring. Maby we can get together up there and drink one over old Pinto lies. What part of the country do you live in? If you want to get this off this site answer me at mjelliott@cox-internet.com   DICK

Hi Dick;
The swap meet is at the Columbus fair grounds. It is put on usually the Sat & Sun after Thanksgiving & sometime around Easter. They have 4 large buildings for this, so it is out of the cold. We live south of Pittsburgh which is about 3 hrs away. It is a great show for V8 guys. Lots of restortion & hi performance parts

Good racing

Hi Dick;
It really dosn't matter. As many times as I have been there, I have not seen much of a difference.I have been going to both for about 10yrs. However, Saturday is a better day, because on Sunday, everbody wants to leave by about 3:00pm.
Tell me some more about your car!!
Good Racing.

Thanks for the info. Which Pinto? I've owned 16 so far and would buy anouther if the deal was right. Four have been race cars. two 2.0 L and two 2.3 L. One drag, two road race, and one hill climb. The hill climber is the newest one. Still not finished, but close. Drag car was some lower class like W-stock. Hard to remember as it was 32  years ago. I should have done like you and kept it. I ended my drag racing with an AHRA Pro Stock 67 Fairlane (427 tunnel port) that was faster than me. Ran against many of the early NHRA Pro-Stockers in those days. Warren Johnson for one. He ran only AHRA back then as NHRA didn't have Pro-Stock yet. You live in the middle of hill climb country. You should put all your old spare parts in a Pinto and try it. Lots cheaper than NHRA these days and you don't have to stop at the end of the straightaway. More later. DICK

Hi Dick
You have had a lot of race cars!!! We run the IHRA ( but our car is legal for NHRA) because you don't have to be a touring pro in "stock" to be competivie. This year, it took a full second (-1.00) under the standard  to make the field at Indy. Plus being out there for at least 5days.Not sure where you live, but I've seen some nice cars listed on the west coast on this site. The 67 Fairlane is one of my favroite cars. Lets move this off site if you want
Good Racing
