Title: Unleaded fuel in early motor
Post by: Ironman on July 11, 2008, 11:53:36 PM
Can you burn unleaded fuel in the 72 2000 cc without installing hard seats?
My car is a 72 sprint and it doesnt say "unleaded fuel only" anywhere I can find.

I always drive older cars on unleaded fuel.  Most of the driving was on the highway at 65-75 miles per hour.   This is the style of driving that should stress the valves & seats without the lead.   I have had no problems.   I have driven them up to to 180,000 miles.  Usually the car is a rust bucket at that time and it had to go, not because of valves or seats.

My thinking is, just drive them until you have a problem.  If you have no problem, great!  If you do, then it will be a later date.

I have tried lead substitute additives.   I have found that it leaves combustion chamber deposits and promotes mild spark knocking.   Spark knocking has more risk at engine damage.
