Here is a step by step way if you do not want to remove the heads , remove engine and put on engine stand , remove valve covers with the rocker arms and pushrods , then remove the water pump and timing cover, rotate engine upside down, remove oil pan , remove rod caps and remove the crankshaft , pull the camshaft out and then use a magnet remove the lifters , or you can just remove the heads , 🎯

lucky he does not have a old ford 292 or 312 V8 from the 50s, the lifters only come out the bottom , a real pain , or an Lycoming aircraft engine , yep you have to remove the engine and take off all the cylinders and spilt the case to remove them ,  :o

It's recommended to remove the heads when replacing the lifters/valves, because... depending on the year & manufacture of the 2.8-engine, it may NOT have stellite valves or hardened valve-seats which is important when running the lead-free gasolines and the "Ethanol-added Fuels" that are now common in the U.S...
(This is now recommended on all engines not specifically designed to run on "Unleaded Fuels" or are designed as "Flex-Fuels-Vehicles".)

I certainly recommend looking into a good Crane Valve-train with stellite valves and hardened seats so that running these above fuels do not risk burning the valves..

"Stellite Valves:
Stellite valves have a hard metal coating that prolongs valve life. Back in the days of leaded gasoline, the lead additives coated the valves, providing added protection. With unleaded fuels now being burned, the hard metal coating does the protecting." http://www.autoeducation.com/rm_preview/valve_train.htm

IHTH.. ;)

The 2.8 in the pinto used two different heads , early heads had the spark plug wit a gasket, later 77 up had the new style taper plug , when I rebuilt my engine on my 76 one head had a small crack , but not leaking (yet) on my 79 both head were busted , the fan belt broke and ran hot in a blink of an eye , friend of mine had a old 86 bronco II with the 2.8 and he gave me the heads , which I used , this was the last year for the 2.8 and being used in a truck I believe all the up grades to the engine and head were done ,it was made for unleaded and has induction hardened seats ,and good grade valves , found a new set on eBay for the ranger , the block it thicker also and camshaft journals are larger , if you can find one use it , it has a different timing cover and the water pump also , has a larger bearing and the big plus three grove pulley that all the fan belts go over , so if you lose a belt your still running the water pump , ford made that change knowing how easy the heads crack when you run it hot , hope this helps you ,
