Title: Window crank handle alternative?
Post by: Wittsend on February 24, 2014, 03:26:54 PM
I was watching the wife struggle to roll up the window yesterday.  I was wondering if there is an alternative window crank from another Ford product that fits the splines, is longer (for leverage), but no so long that it interferes with hitting other things.

And, BTW, I have no aversion to drilling a hole in the handle to secure it.  Anyone ever used anything else?

first things first...why is it so hard to roll the widows up and down?

Mine was hard because the gears and teeth had rust on them causing them to bind. A little wire brushing and some spray lube(triflow) did the trick

Take the door panel off and and inspect them first. It may also be the weather stripping in the window channel causing this by putting a bind on the window. If this is the case, do NOT put a bigger handle on there because this will create a broken door glass that may be very hard to find.

just my .02 worth of red neck info

I'm sure that (lubrication) is part of the issue. But my wife also has numbness in her hand and that increases the difficulty to roll the window.  So, I was looking for anything in the leverage angle that might help.

Lube window channels and gears like he said, depending on the severity of your problem, it could make things quite a bit easier than you think.

When I got mine both doors were hard, wife couldn't move them and she couldn't even open one door, lubed them all up and she rolls the windows up and down effortlessly now.

IIRC there may be an assist spring in there as well to help with lifting the window, if broken it would increase force needed to go up.
