What you guys think? Worth it?
« on: March 16, 2010, 10:00:15 PM »
Ok a few weeks back I bought a 80 pinto paid $850 got it home and found out it needs full floor pans, rear main seal, and interior work. OK now I found another 80 pinto that doesnt run he broke some teeth off the flywheel and needs a starter and battery. He is asking $500 for it, been talking to him all week and now we are talking about trading cars. Would you trade a running car for a non running car? I havent seen it in person (4hrs away) but I do have pics, it has 75k on motor so he says, rebuild tranny, new carb, header and side exit exhaust, racing seats and aftermarket steering wheel. Tell me what you think!

Hi 1980bean. Welcome!

You're wondering if you should trade a running car for a non-running car... the way I see it, it depends on the overall goods and bads. You say your current '80 needs floor pans, rear main seal and interior work. This one you're considering trading for needs a starter and a flywheel and battery. f it were me I would trade and get the other car...IF that was all that was wrong with it. Are this one's floorboards solid? Will it need extensive (and potentially costly) bodywork? Are there other things that could be wrong with it, like, say, a blown head gasket? Get all the facts before you decide. Floor pand aren't impossible to replace, but they're no walk in the park, I'll wager.  A battery and starter are easy to replace. The flywheel... I don't know... but I think that would be easier than floor pans and interior and rear main seal any day! lol. So... based on what you've told us... yes I would trade.  ;D

WOW! If it weren't for that darn rust... it's otherwise a little beauty! I really dig the stripes on it. I looks like the seats are already out (or were) so at least carpeting would be easier... but those holey rusted floors... BUT...the yellow one has rear quarter flipper windows! I'm biased towards rear quarter flipper windows! Look at the yellow one some more and go over it with a fine-tooth comb. Also... is its registration current? In Cali if you have registration arrears and sell a car (non-smog) that person has to take on the fees. I'm still leaning towards trade... unless you're sentimental towards your orange one...like I am towards ALL my three cars!

I looked at the yellow one again, and can see it really needs a paint job... a thorough one, to remove the surface rust so you don't get rust cancer. Another thing I wondered... are you wanting to restore either of these cars to stock, or are there other plans, like racing or whatever? The orange one might need floor pans but is more stock than the yellow one. Most of this is purely cosmetic, easy to fix.  ;D

Your floor boards do not look that bad, maybe one of the rears will need the full piece but the rest looks like it would take some small patches?  In my opinion, I would keep your car.  It looks like it is in better shape to me.  From the pictures, the yellow car looks modifed where your car looks less molested.   I prefer to start with something that nobody has monkied with instead of trying to figure out someone else's mess.

To me, your car looks a LOT more solid than the yellow one... I think I'd fix the floorboards and keep it!  Just my two cents worth!

If it was my car id get him down as low as possible and use the orange pinto for parts ,,if his has good floors!!!!!!,pull the seats , carpet and look at the floors in the other car,,,his dash  sure is way worst than yours. Also how`s the body of the yellow car compared to yours,, if it`s worst than your car you may wanta go the other road and use the yellow cars floors in your car...

I was thinking the same thing. I would make one car from the best parts & sell the rest off.

I have to agree with Tigger and DGA57, the orange one is the better looking car.  The floor boards don't look all that bad, just some patch work. The body looks more solid on the Orange car and the stripes are realy nice, make sure you duplicate them perfectly if you bring that one up to par.

I'm with everyone else. restore the orange one, possibly transfer the flipper windows from the yellow one to if possible.
