pulling the trigger from 2.8 v6 to 2.3 turbo need help
« on: August 08, 2012, 12:17:45 AM »
swapping and fabbing i do not have a issue with. but if i can make this a bolt in, id much rather

taking out the busted v6, and swapping in a 2.3 turbo motor. has a c3 now, but i have a rebuilt c3 with a shift kit.

all the 2.3 stuff is from a 84 stang gt, and i do have the pinto front sump pan and pickup..

info on a dip stick would help as well, but im more concerned about mounts right now.. what do i need?

can i use the frame stands from the v6, or do i need to find 2.3 ones?

The C3 wont last long if you do anything to
the 2.3T.
I have been told by members here that the 2.8
frame mounts are fine, you will need Pinto engine
mounts.

The block should have a plugged hole for the front sump pan dipstick, pop the plug out and move the stick of find a Pinto dip stick.  The C-3 will hold up fine the the stock 84GT HP, as racer stated if you plan on building 300whp than plan on a Later (A4LD) or a C-4 trans

Wiped cams are common. Have one in a spare engine that's shot at 70xxx miles. Check for stuck lifters.....

Gearhead look for a Ford Ranger with the 2.3 not the 2.0 or the 8 plug head and grab the whole thing( check the cam) because the head is good for a spare( no cracks) alsothe cam and lifters are on EBay. The motor mounts that go to the engine are not for sale but you should be able to use the Ranger upper mounts. If you are going to use the C-3 YOU CAN make it work with an aftermarket shift kit, cooling system etc (on EBay).

Gearhead, your plan to use a 95 up Ranger cam should work from what I have read.  From memory, the 95 up Ranger roller rockers are sized for 7mm valve stems and do not fit over the larger 84 valve stems without modification.  For a matched set of roller rockers and cam that fit the larger 84 stems, look in the early 90's dual plug heads.  These 90's heads themselves use different intake manifolds than the 84, so may not make a good back up.

The '87-94 Ranger cam is the direct swap in
There's a lot of information and specifications that are unique to the turbo variant of the 2.3 engine and some of it contradicts some accepted normally aspirated practices

I've had several SVOs and Merkurs and they are fun and reliable when set up properly
