t-bird turbo
« on: June 15, 2013, 04:23:43 PM »
I drive by this pinto 2-3 times a week. It has been sitting for 10 years that I know of. I am going to approach the owner and make an offer. It is in his driveway so I have not inspected it at all. It is in Colorado so I do not expect much rust. I am going to assume the engine and trans are trash. I want to get together as much info as I can before I make an offer. I have found that you can get a video on the net that will teach you almost anything auto related.
First question. It is a 76 trunk model. I thought I would offer $500.00 Does that seem fair for a car that has a fair body and nothing else going for it?
Second question. What years were the t-bird that had the 2.3 turbo? From the posts I have seen here, I understand that it is a pretty simple swap. I know nothing about auto repair and will be teaching myself. I can find how to do almost anything on youtube.
Any advise would be most appreciated.

Isn't there also a Mercury that has the same turbo engine?

T-birds had the EFI turbo from 83 to 89. It was available in some Cougars as well as Merkur XR4TI & SVO Mustangs. It takes a bit of engineering to swap it but there are plenty of how-to posts to get it done.

Let me fix that for yah T-birds had them from 83-88,Xr4tis are the only car that had a 2.3 turbo in 89. Also svo had them and gt/turbo stangs 83-84 for the gt and 84-86 for the svo and the only Mercury that had one is the 84-86 cougar XR7.
1978 Mercury Bobcat 2.3t swapped.Always needs more parts!

Check out my ad
the engine and trans are gonna cost at least a grand, let's not talk about getting the ECM workin right, the car another 500 the rearend 300 maybe and now you got brakes to mess with and probably paint and so many other unthought of problems. Buy mine and it's done. It's a little pricey but nice.
